View Full Version : Alex Smith, #1 pick?

Just read Mel Kiper's first mock draft, and he has the 49ers taking Smith at #1. I thought a lot of people were doubting if he was even a first round pick?

I'd rather have Kyle Orton

Kiper feels that Rodgers and Smith are pretty much even in the physical attributes. Only difference to favor Smith is his 2 in. height advantage and his intelligence. Kiper is not the only draft related place that has Alex Smith that high.

Please NO. Now that Leinhart is staying, the Niners should trade down to 2-10 and get some extra picks. It's not like this draft has anybody that is so great that they are above the rest. I'd be happy with anybody in the top 10 in this draft and extra picks to help fill the mountain of holes that the team has.

This is not a slam but I read the exact same thoughts on the Buccaneer boards and the exact same logic is used.

What makes people think that even with a first round that has no one jump out at you there's going to be eager teams waiting to lose picks and trade up to pay a guy even more than they'd have to if they waited and either got their guy or a similar talent in any case? It doesn't make sense. Teams trade up to get players they need and that do stand out and if those players aren't there they are going to stick with where they're at.

Some guys even said there are ALWAYS teams you can trade with if you want to move down. It strikes me as absurd.

Shrug.

I'm waiting to see where Marion Barber winds up. I'm shocked that he left after this year, with the solid crop of runningbacks in this years draft and the fact he probably could have used another year after having several disappointing outtings this season.

Could it be that he saw the writing on the wall that Maroney was going to become an even bigger part of the offense? If his carries were going to be cut, I can understand him leaving early.

I doubt it. Barber got 37 carries in the Music City Bowl, and it was after the bowl game that he decided to declare (before the game he said he was planning on staying). I'd expect he would have been Mason's top option, though only slightly as it's likely they would have split much as they did this year.

But Micheal Bush was gonna get the most carries next season anyway. :)

I completely agree with your logic. But remember...once the combine begins and players get "hot," teams can do crazy things. Dewayne Robertson was a top 15-20 pick after the season. Then, after a monster combine, he became - I believe - the #2 pick, a guy the Jets traded up to get.

I don't see any reason that the same thing can't happen this year. Maybe someone wants to get ahead of the Dolphins to get Benson if he's really impressive in the combine/interviews.

And no, I'm not just saying this as a desperate Niner fan hoping they can trade down :).

There is a lot of time between now and the draft, but at this point, this looks like one of the worst years in recent memory to have the #1 overall pick. No one is worth taking and paying at that level, and no one will sell the farm to trade up with you.

SF better hope that someone has a really great combine.

Yeah, this is looking like an awful draft- Im hoping someone blows them away and we have Dwayne Robertson/Mike Mamula/ Philip Rivers situation - and the Niners can fill their various holes..

My guess is that Barber thinks Maroney will come out next season and didn't want to be in the same draft class since Maroney is generally considered the better pro prospect.

Judging by how running backs have slid in the draft in recent years, I suspect Barber will be a 3rd or 4th rounder unless he can put up a 4.45 40 or better.

If the're pretty much even, why wouldn't SF take the local boy in Rodgers? Since there's a large California Alumni base in SF, at least it would create some local buzz which they probably desparately need.

Well, I think there are two good QBs and two good RBs at the top.

I think this is a better year to get the second QB than when, say, Joey Harrington or Akili Smith were picked. Or a better year to get the #2 RB than when *COUGH* Ricky Williams was there.

Don't kid yourself Rodgers and Smith are going to both bomb worse than Harrington and Akili.

01-19-2005, 01:11 PM
While not going as far as saying both will definitely bomb, both are certainly miles from a sure thing. I wouldn't touch either of them at number 1. I wouldn't take a running back there either. Definitely a hard draft to be at the top of... last year if you didn't like Manning or Rivers there was always Gallery or Fitzgerald. Safest thing in this years draft looks to be the TE Miller but can you really take a TE in the top couple of picks?

Samdari

I think Rodgers is going to be a good NFL QB, but probably not great.

Each only has to last more than 3 years in the league to surpass Akili's career. I think both are slam dunks to do so.

Buzz here in the bay area is that Rodgers is really 6'0 200 and not 6'2" 220 and that once he gets to the combine and they get the real measurements on him his stock will drop considerably.

49ers are starting to remind me of the Warriors, poorly managed AND unlucky!

This appears to be one of the weakest drafts ever for #1 overall, kind of like when the W's drafted Joe Smith #1 overall a couple years back.

DeToxRox
01-19-2005, 03:45 PM
if I am the Niners and I cannot trade, I'd draft Derrick Johnson, Mike Williams or Antrel Rolle. Those three are probably the best three in my opinion

AgustusM
01-19-2005, 03:51 PM
I think Rolle is the way to go, they are very bad in the secondary- the OL is so bad that any offensive player they draft will struggle, best ot try and go dominant defense and rebuild the OL in the rest of the draft.

I've always been curious, what makes a "weak draft"? I know you have players who don't have the complete skills in this draft, but does it make them crappier? They make not be "as-ready", but they still have talented. Players will bust, and some will flourish. It's all about good scouting, and finding the right players for the right teams.

I'd have a hard time going with Williams over Braylon Edwards. And I've also seen most rankings have Pac-Man Jones over Rolle.

Personally if I were picking number 1 I'd probably strongly consider Derrick Johnson.

11. Dallas Cowboys: Shawne Merriman (jr.), DE/OLB, Maryland
A workout warrior with incredible physical skills, Merriman would be an ideal end/linebacker combo in a 3-4 scheme.

20. Dallas Cowboys (from BUF): Troy Williamson (jr.), WR, South Carolina
The fastest wideout in the draft, Williamson would be a great help to a team that lacked a consistent vertical threat.

Thanks Bearcat. Those are similar to what I expect the Cowboys to do - take the best DE or CB at 11 and grab a WR at 20.

TazFTW
01-20-2005, 09:41 AM
He has the Cowboys passing on Antrell Rolle and Derrick Johnson (Johnson looks to be a linebacker Parcells would draft). Here's the full list.

1. San Francisco 49ers: Alex Smith (jr.), QB, Utah
A smart player who will pick up an NFL system quickly, Smith has good size, is mobile enough to hurt teams with his running ability and is also an efficient passer who can make all the necessary throws.

2. Miami Dolphins: Cedric Benson, RB, Texas
A strong, tough runner with good speed for his size, Benson would help fill the void left by the retirement of Ricky Williams. But there is speculation the Dolphins will attempt to fill their running back need through trade, perhaps for Buffalo's Travis Henry, so stay tuned.

3. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Rodgers (jr.), QB, California
Rodgers is a smart, accurate passer with a quick release. His arm strength is adequate and he is a better prospect at this point in his career than former Cal QB Kyle Boller, now the starter for the Baltimore Ravens.

4. Chicago Bears: Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn
Perhaps the most complete back in the draft, Brown can carry or catch the ball with equal skill. He has size, instincts and quickness that allowed him to put up excellent numbers at the college level.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Carnell Wiliams, RB, Auburn
A creative, deceptive runner with tremendous natural skills. Williams can get tough yards inside despite lacking ideal size, a point illustrated by his 29 rushing TDs over the last two years.

6. Tennessee Titans: Adam Jones, CB, West Virginia
A good cover man who will also contribute as a kick returner, Jones has very good closing speed and is a willing tackler in run support. That may be his most important quality with the NFL hurting pass defenses by focusing on downfield infractions by defensive backs.

7. Oakland Raiders: Dan Cody, DE, Oklahoma
A fiery, intense player who always goes all-out, Cody is similar to former NFL standout Kevin Greene in his ability to play on his feet as an outside linebacker, or in a three-point stance as a defensive end.

8. Arizona Cardinals: Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State
Johnson improved his stock immensely this year. He ties up offensive linemen and is able to gain penetration against the run as well as collapse the pocket in passing situations.

9. Washington Redskins: Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan
Edwards has the size, speed and athleticism to take over games, and he did that several times in 2004. He also significantly cut down on dropped passes and concentration lapses this past season, pushing his stock even higher.

10. Detroit Lions: Heath Miller (jr.), TE, Virginia
A tremendous pass receiver and a willing blocker along the line, Miller would give quarterback Joey Harrington another weapon to complement his wide receivers. He'll also be a help to running back Kevin Jones in the rushing attack.

11. Dallas Cowboys: Shawne Merriman (jr.), DE/OLB, Maryland
A workout warrior with incredible physical skills, Merriman would be an ideal end/linebacker combo in a 3-4 scheme.

12. San Diego Chargers (from NYG): Derrick Johnson, OLB, Texas
Has the speed and strength to chase ballcarriers from sideline to sideline and make things happen when he gets to the ball.

13. Houston Texans: Mike Williams (jr.), WR, USC
Williams did not play in 2004 but dominated the college game for two seasons while at USC. His 6-foot-5, 230-pound frame gives him a big advantage over defensive backs, and he would make a perfect complement to young standout receiver Andre Johnson.

14. Carolina Panthers: Jammal Brown, OT, Oklahoma
Brown's long arms, good feet and balance allow him to engage defenders easily and move them off the ball or away from the quarterback.

15. Kansas City Chiefs: Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami
The Chiefs likely will dedicate most of their draft to defense, and Rolle is a good start. He has the cover skills to shut down wide receivers and also gives up his body against the run.

16. New Orleans Saints: Thomas Davis (jr.), OLB, Georgia
A punishing tackler who played safety in college, Davis has the size and speed to move into the front seven and make an impact at the pro level.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin
A force along the line of scrimmage, James can play the run, rush the passer and command double-team blocks. There are some durability questions, though, after he missed parts of the last two seasons with injury.

18. Minnesota Vikings: Shaun Cody, DL, USC
A versatile lineman who can play end or tackle, Cody would be a great fit for a Vikings team that has struggled at times along the defensive front.

19. St. Louis Rams: David Pollack, DE, Georgia
Pollack plays with tremendous intensity and his motor does not stop. He makes up for a lack of size with good initial quickness and great closing speed.

20. Dallas Cowboys (from BUF): Troy Williamson (jr.), WR, South Carolina
The fastest wideout in the draft, Williamson would be a great help to a team that lacked a consistent vertical threat.

21. Jacksonville Jaguars: Alex Barron, OT, Florida State
Barron is equally adept in the passing and running games and has light feet for a player his size.

22. Baltimore Ravens: Roddy White, WR, UAB
White's 4.42 speed in the 40 gives him a size/speed combination in the elite category. He is a big-play wideout who averaged 20.0 yards per catch in 2004.

23. Seattle Seahawks: Darryl Blackstock (jr.), OLB, Virginia
Blackstock is a solid all-around talent who shows flashes of greatness and has tremendous natural physical skills.

24. Green Bay Packers: Channing Crowder (so.), MLB, Florida
A tremendously productive player who adapted quickly to the collegiate game, Crowder has the ideal physical skills for a man in the middle.

25. Denver Broncos: Matt Roth, DE, Iowa
Roth is similar to David Pollack: undersized with a great motor and intensity. Roth was productive during his senior year and has good physical ability.

26. New York Jets: Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn
A consistent, durable corner who can cover and support the run, Rogers has played against some of the best talent in the nation during his career.

27. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Browner (so.), CB, Oregon State
A consistent cover man with good size, Browner would make a nice complement to Atlanta's top pick last year, CB DeAngelo Hall.

28. San Diego Chargers: Roscoe Parrish (jr.), WR, Miami
Parrish has speed and would be a good option to round out a receiving corps bolstered by the addition of WR Keenan McCardell and the emergence of TE Antonio Gates.

29. Indianapolis Colts: Bryant McFadden, CB, Florida State
Did not intercept many passes, but that's because teams respected his ability and avoided his side of the field. McFadden has the size to match up with big receivers.

30. New England Patriots: Justin Miller (jr.), CB, Clemson
A good fit for a team thin in the secondary this season.

31. Philadelphia Eagles: Justin Tuck (jr.), DE, Notre Dame
Good size and strength. Would be an asset for a team that thrives on pressuring the quarterback.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Smith, TE, Stanford
An athletic pass receiver with great body control, Smith can stretch the deep middle and is a good hook-zone threat.

Honolulu_Blue
01-20-2005, 10:30 AM
I have no feel at all what the Lions will do. The biggest areas of need are the OL (they will likely lose Stockar McDougle to free agency) and safety. There isn't any safety out there worth drafting at the 10 spot. Many have Thomas Davis projected as a linebacker in the pros. There are a few tackle prospects one out of Florida State (I think). I guess Heath Miller would be an improvement over Alexander, but I just don't see that as an area of need. I guess, at this point, it should be a best player available type of situation. There have to be more holes to fill on a 6-10 team...

The Lions did amazing well last year. Many of their picks: Williams, K. Jones, Lehman, Keith Smith (CB), and Alexis Lewis say a decent amount of playing time. Williams, Jones, and Lehman were all starters. Now if C. Rog can stay healthy and Joey could finally come through....

The only NFL team that has suffered worse than the Lions in the last 50 years are the Arizona Cardinals. I am firm in this belief. They are the only team and fan base I have any pity for.

No way Dan Cody falls to the second round, IMHO.

Wow. I can definitely see the Cowboys passing on Johnson, just because of needs, but I can't imagine them not taking Rolle if he was available.

I mentioned Johnson because he seems to be the type of LB that Parcells likes to have and not guys like Coakley and Dat. So, Parcells could draft Johnson if available because it's his "need".

Then again Johnson will probably not be available as mock drafts this early mean nothing, especially when there is no one that is really an overall #1 but a few guys that look good at #2.

This is the first Mock draft I have seen that has the Redskins taking anything but a DE or an OL. Seems odd... i just don't see WR as a big need, especially compared to OL.

Well, WR might be a need since i've lost almost all faith in Rod Gardner, he drops to many dam passes and doesn't run very good routes. Taylor Jacobs has fallen FAR out of favor with Gibbs so i don't expect him to step up. I agree we do need a serious pass rushing DE, but we did just fine without one this season so maybe we'll pick up a 'project' DE in the 3rd round.

Im not as convinced that we need much in the way of offensive line except a center. Jansen is coming back next year and he's our best O-lineman. Better then Samuels if you ask me. Thomas is a very good all-around guard and im still hoping that Dockery turns into a good guard aswell, he certainly as the potential. So maybe if we get a center in Free Agency or draft one in the 3rd/4th round, i think our O-line will be ok.
