'hood: (contraction of "neighborhood")...ranging from lower-middle-class homeowners to some Section 8 housing. (where I grew up) My mother has a photograph of five boys from my neighborhood when they were around 10 or 11 years old. They're all around 50 now. Where are they now?

Ronnie: moderately successful radio DJ until alcohol problem destroyed his family....putting the pieces back together now

Tony: mid-level executive with a large department store chain, probably approaching $200K per year income

Jerome: not sure if he's in jail or out of jail right now, but he's been in and out a bunch of times, mainly for burglary, since he was in his late teens

Rudy: football scholarship to Ga. Tech, played QB, got his degree and is now a mid-level executive with a large company based in Columbus

Tootsie: shot and killed trying to rob a liquor store when he was in his mid 20's

Actually, come to think about it, there are six boys in that picture. My other older brother is in it as well. He and his wife are both teachers.

Jerome stole from us, and he lived across the street from us. He had the gall to steal Tony's 8-track Stereo (!) out of his car, and then go over to Columbus College and BRAG about it in front of Tony and Tony's frat brothers. He got a pretty good beat-down from some Kappas for that one. When I was a teenager, my father had to keep tabs on when Jerome was in or out of jail, because it determined how we parked our cars. ("Ben, Jerome's out again. I'll pull mama's car up. Park behind her in the driveway when you get home tonight, rather than out on the street.")

That got his scholarship to Notre Dame revoked. Signed with FSU and was charged with pot possession (rumored that he was singled out of a group, again, for dating the same white girl). S.D. We all know someone like Tootsie... Someone who is either in jail, or a grave, and you feel that the world is a little bit safer.

I grew up with a kid we'll call Ronnie. The boy was just insane. I got along with him, after our only fight (I think I lost, but gave as good as I got. 2nd grade was a long time ago...) In 3rd grade he threw a pair of scissors at the teacher while she was writing and they stuck in the board about two feet from her head. She was visibly shaken, grabbed him by his throat and threw him into the hallway. He got kicked out for that... I last heard he's doing about 20 for selling coke to a cop...

Dang, does every place have somebody like that? There's a guy here in Monticello that everybody keeps track of the same way. Been boosting cars since he was like 14, still trying it in his early 20's, keeps getting caught. And when he's out, phones start ringing to make sure everybody locks their cars.

I'm pretty sure he failed a drug test while on prohbation for the fight. Not that it's like a massive difference, but I don't know how it would entail him getting singled out at all or anything like that.

OK. I apologize for jumping the gun and thinking you were trying to defend Randy Moss. Please continue stating facts without trying to say anything whatsoever and having no opinion about him that anyone should feel anything about. I can now see exactly where you are not defending him.

Never again will I believe someone is defending someone else by pointing fingers and offering supposed facts about thier past as why they may act the way they do.

Although every area in America has its share of racists, and Randy may have had to have dealt with the occasional racist, I would hardly describe his High School or the area with "a ton of racism." I grew up about fifteen miles south of Mr. Moss, and although there were only a handful of non-white people, I cannot remember one single incident, despite having one as a close friend and another as a teammate. In fact, every black adult where I grew up had a position of authority, and everybody loved them, because they were good people.

So, while I am sure that Moss dealt with the occasional idiot, I take serious issue with your characterization of the area.

P.S. - WV simply is not as rascist as other poor, rural areas may be. Remember, we split off of our state when it seceeded from the union in large part over the issue of slavery. We hated the idea of slavery and what the south stood for so much that we broke off from our state, the only people to do so. For fifty years prior to the Civil War, it was a known fact that Virginian slaveowners specifically avoided travelling with their slaves in modern WV, because there was a tendancy for the slaves to go missing as locals freed them and the law in the area turned a blind eye to slaveowners claiming their "property" was missing.

Anyhow, I'm not a Moss hater. I actually kind of like him. I was at the Redskins-Vikings game that he walked out on, and, while I didn't see that particular incident, I did notice one thing.

During warm-ups, he played catch with Vikings fans he saw in the stands, posed for pictures, signed autographs, the whole bit. The only one on the team that did so. And I've repeatedly seen him hand the ball off to handicapped kids at the Metrodome after a touchdown.

So, he might be an obnoxious fool at times, but he's not all bad.

The Packers thing was blown way out of proportion, and Fox sports sucks. First of all, he fake-mooned a Packers crowd that REGULARLY drops-trou and moons the visiting team in the parking lot at Lambeau. I thought it was just in good fun.

Second, I saw Brett Favre throw two punches at a guy's head in the second half during an altercation. No flag thrown. No comment by Joe Buck. No mention of it whatsoever.

I'm not one to play the race card here, but, come on...

I really don't get the anger over the "$10,000 is nothing to me" comment. It's sure a lot better than "I gotta feed my family"

I won't defend a lot about Randy Moss but i'll defend that, and I'll defend the mooning incident... if any other player had done it, it wouldn't have been blown out of proportion and it would have been regarded as "quite clever" once the story about the packers fans mooning the bus was allowed to come out w/o all the uproar.
