I just recently upgraded my machine, the only thing left is to wait for my ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (128) to come back in for stock. Has anyone played this game? I've been considering picking up some FPS to test out how my system goes and the like, and from what I've been able to gather, it seems to have rather good reviews.

I was considering picking up Call of Duty (played it a couple of times, on another friend's computer), and would like to eventually get an opportunity to see how well my machine's performing.

Just a side note, I ended up going with a AthlonXP 2600+ w/ 1024 of RAM going Dual-Channel. The 64-bit stuff was way out of my price range!

I played the demo, and though it was impressive it didn't rock my world like it has for some. I like Call of Duty more, but that may just be because of the WW2 genre.

Aye, I can understand that. My only possible beef with Call of Duty, however, is that I'm told it's rather short. Sadly, I think that may be the case with most games these days - with folks focusing more so on gameplay and mechanics than story.

Still, I've always hated the notion of RPGs being rated as "60+ hours" or the like, but I digress!

I still have an old school Return to Castle Wolfenstein somewhere here that I had considered loading up and what not. I had figured a FPS would be a good 'benchmark' of sorts for me to gauge with, as opposed to those 3dMark and PCMark benchmarking utilities out there.

I'll have to give a further look into CoD then. I suppose Far Cry's ratings piqued my curiousity, and I guess I'm getting the name of this game mixed up with that television show, 'Farscape'.

Which is odd...since I don't even watch that show!

I went ahead and checked out some previews for this game, and apparently, it seems to be quite the talk at the local game stores.

In any case, someone was mentioning that it was only 15-20 hours long or the like. Still, I was told it would be a game that would definately put my videocard to good use. Nonetheless, I'm a bit leery when it comes to games that seem to be all great and the like - but 'too short'. I'm not quite so sure how interested I might be, if I ever go through the game once or the like...but apparently, I hear the AI in this game is pretty damn good - akin to the feeling most folks had when Half-Life first came out.

Anyone else have any input on this title? Owners, perhaps? Recommendations? FPS aren't the only thing I'm looking at, however. I only mentioned it, as a way for me to get a good 'feel' for how my machine'll perform - also, for games I've never gotten around to buying, due to prior machine restrictions.

Have you tried the Far Cry demo? I have the demo disk and can send it to you if you want.

Is there an actual demo link I could probably try? I suppose I'm intrigued by the concept of an AMD 64-bit version that would be coming out in the later year. I figure, I already have the videocard and memory....just a matter of a CPU and motherboard replacement of my mid-range system, I suppose.

I formerly was turned off by games that were "too short". However, the reality is that I rarely complete a game anymore because I don't have the time to devote to it. I think that unless you are a person with unlimited amounts of time to play, you should not let the length of the game discourage you.

Replayability is definately a factor for me - not so much in terms of multiplayer, but single player. I guess, when it comes to FPS and the like, I'm more into "long levels" than "short levels", regardless of whether or not a campaign lasts only five levels, or ten. In this day and age, I'm not quite so sure what it is that I'm exactly 'looking' for, I guess.

Soldier of Fortune 2 was appealing to me - that was definately one FPS that I've kept. It was a long game - tedious at some points, but something I personally enjoyed. That was back in the day, though. In the end, I always end up hoping that I didn't waste my $ for a quick 'week only' fix. Like you, judicial clerk, I don't have much time to pass many games. However, when holidays roll around, and I end up with nothing much to do...I find myself glued to the PC for lengthy periods of time. I guess I'm "planning ahead", so to speak.

I played the demo a couple of times through and liked it. It had a slightly different feel from Call of Duty (and substantially different from Unreal Tournament). The graphics were pretty impressive if you can handle em, particularly the endless zoom of the sniper rifle and binoculars. I'm going to buy it when it drops in price again - I think it's already $34 somewhere.

Welp,

I caved in and picked up this title once my videocard had come into stock. In any case, it took a wee bit to tweaking around, but I was told that if I wanted to get a "good feel" for a benchmark of sorts, this game would be the one to push it. In any case, I installed in, got everything running smooth - just a minor crash here and there.

It's surprisingly entertaining - and I thought FPS games for me died out back at the dorms of UCSB. In any case, I thought this was fun. The multiplayer component seems fine as well. Some friends of mine tell me that the MP options aren't quite as extravagant as UT2K4's or what not, but that it suffices. The vehicles and stuff, along with the 'surf' MP map is a complete blast to play. At least, this coming from someone who doesn't play FPS' too much. It shows too - with my 10 kills, 20+ death action going on. ;)

Guess I've lost my touch!

I lack the skills to dominate in multiplayer on this game!

Practice, practice, practice! Does anyone happen to play this game much? Probably some kind of FOFC tag team action going on with some of these blokes?

Far Cry is decent, but I can;t get into the story. The lack of a save feature gets to be annoying as well. The AI is spotty at times, ranging from super keen vilians who know right where you are as if there is a "if player reaches this spot, turn and fire" routine. It does do a good job of flanking you for the most part though, so it's important to keep moving and looking ahead for your next move as you are playing.

I can see that it is a very good game, it just has some flaws that seem to rub me the wrong way and that's more of my own personal opinion, not a big criticism that others should give a lot of creedance to.

Overall I like Call of Duty better, but I'm big into the WWII theme so that gives it the edge.

I'm really liking Far Cry. The WWII theme is getting kinda old for me. The feeling of freedom is a big plus. Most FPS's make me feel like someone else is in control and all I'm doing is pulling the trigger, Far Cry gives me a totally different feeling. In general, I also feel that the enemies are fairly intelligent, no gung-ho, Rambo shit in this game. You have to think as you play.

Not a perfect game by any means, the lack of in game save is annoying as hell, but thats mostly because the AI is so challenging. The sound is also kinda choppy on my system, I'm assuming its a video card problem, still annoying though. Despite that, I still rate it as the best FPS I've played since Half-Life.

Not sure how far you are into the game yet, but there will be some areas where you need to go balls-to-the-wall Rambo-esque to get through it as I learned the hard way. A couple places I tried my usual think through teh situation and area first and try to find an opening to give me an advantage and I ultimately found out that going guns a blazing was what ended up giving me an advantage because it caught them before the rest of their cronies showed up to seriously outnumber and outflank me.

I'm not saying that I don't like the game, but I can't seem to get as deeply into it as others. The story just doesn't do it for me.

I do love the levels and the wide open feel.

i don't play online, due to rubbish experiences with team fortess / counterstrike. seemed like way too many morons playing to make it fun.

For those who still play this game online and all, there's a way to view your World Ranking! :D

Never knew about it. Turns out, I'm ranked #6756 or so under FFA.

I haven't gotten around to playing online and I haven't had time to play the game in about a week. I plan on dusting it off tonight or tomorrow and jumping online for a bit sometime tomorrow.

Apparently, this Monday, they're planning on releasing Patch v1.2 after quite sometime. The boards there have been frantic, with a whole ton of irritated users completely flaming everyone and Ubisoft. Aside from that, I just stick to what works for me. No problems on my end yet.

Heh, gonna have to check that out. Flaming always gets things released quicker.

Oh, BTW - FarCry Patch v1.2 is out.

Think it came out a couple of days ago!

Oops. Update on that v1.2 patch. It seems like Ubisoft's recalled it, due to some weird configuration errors on multiple setups.

I was getting audio errors before the 1.2 patch. With it they became constant. This 1.2 patch has become a joke.

Well...FYI,

Patch v1.3 was released last week. So far, everyone seems to be loving it.
