View Full Version : The Latest Creative Idea Bled Dry by Hollywood Writers

Not that this idea for a show/movie hasn't been explored for years, but I saw an ad for the new Kate Hudson movie Raising Helen, in which a single, 20-something career woman (modeling agency exec) is suddenly forced to raise her recently-deceased sister and brother-in-law's 3 kids. OK, fine.

Then I happened across an article describing some new shows, and saw a description of an upcoming WB show, starring Lori Laughlin, in which a single, 30-something career woman (attorney) is suddenly forced to raise her...you guessed it!...recently-deceased sister and brother-in-law's 3 kids.

As far as I'm aware, this show is unrelated to Raising Helen, although the idea of running a continuation of Raising Helen on TV was (may still be) in the plans, since I found this from October 2003:

RAISING HELEN (ABC, New!) - Mandeville Films ("Monk") is developing a small screen version of the upcoming Garry Marshall-helmed feature "Raising Helen." ABC is close to picking up the script for the project, which is set up at Touchstone Television. Like the film, the series revolve around a Manhattan socialite (played by Kate Hudson in the feature) whose life changes when she's forced to raise her recently deceased sister's children. The series then would pick up where the feature leaves off, when Hudson's character gets a job at a modeling agency in Manhattan while taking care of the kids. Mandeville topper David Hoberman is on board to executive produce the project alongside Marshall, who is expected to direct the pilot should it be greenlit.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

I ran across the following plot synopses for two more new shows:

"Kat Plus One" (ABC drama pilot): "A young New York publicist's (Marisa Coughlan) life changes when she has to raise her nephew."

"Kevin Hill" (UPN drama pilot): "A young attorney (Taye Diggs) must give up his playboy lifestyle when he winds up raising his cousin's infant daughter."

So....let me be the first to warn you about the upcoming deluge of shows that are going to look and sound a lot alike. Chalk another one up for the ever-creative Hollywood writers!

Anything that puts Lori Laughlin back on TV is fine with me.

Yeah, this plot device got tired after "Big Daddy."

Damn you, Scuba Steve!

well, she seems to have taken the shittiest roles possible since hitting it big. It's a shame.

I don't think she has much talent anyway. I think this is all she can get and is lucky to be regally bred.

I'm just sick of movie/show/book titles that follow that overused "[gerund phrase] [name]". The first I really remember, before the overuse, was Raising Arizona and then Chasing Amy. Now it's everywhere.

Like, Finding Forrester... Saving Private Ryan... hmm... this is a fun game.

How do you feel about "Good Will Hunting"?

I hate it when it's called a stove...it's way overused. Nobody says oven anymore.

How about Garfield: The Movie? I just had to throw in that they are actually coming out with this.

That's because the stove is the part on top and the oven is what you bake things in.

Sorry, I like being a smart-ass.

I actually prefer the term "cooking furnace." Oven is so last century.

That did cross my mind but I couldn't come up with another word off the top of my head. Thanks jerkstore...

Getting back to the original point - are the creators of "Family Affair" getting any royalties for any of these series?
