Yesterday, I got my first win ever in a poker pages tournament. I played one of those "mixed games" tournaments where the game changes with each blind level. It cycles through Limit Hold em, Limit Omaha hi/lo, and Limit 7 card stud, until it gets to the final table, which is all No Limit Hold em. They are pretty fun, and Im good at all the games (I think) except I consider myself below average at 7 card stud. Anyway, I won the whole thing yesterday, over a field of about 160. Pat me on the back etc. I entered again today, field was 207 players, and I just finished SECOND! The kicker is, I should have won again. We were down to four players and I have a monster chip lead. The stacks are me: 320k, 2nd place: 130k, 3rd place: 60k, 4th place: 50k (approximations). So I pick up AKo, and watch the short stack push in, Im thinking Ill call him and have a good shot. Then the second place player calls right before me. Now Im thinking I could reraise allin and try to isolate the small stack and probably pick up a jucier pot. I considered the possibilities and thats what I did. What they turned over is a total dream for me. short stack flips up KT, and I have him dominated. Second place flips over AJ! Both of them I have dominated! Flop is no help, turn is a JACK, and river is an Ace. Im bumped down near 80k or something. And 2nd place is now the chip leader. He eliminates the other dude on the next hand and Im in serious trouble, down about 7 or 8 to 1 in chips!
I lost on the very next hand when I had checked in the big blind with 82o, flop came 8 high (!) and I went allin. Miracle of miracles, he called since he had K8 and I was done.
Such a crappy end to the tournament is really trying to put a damper on my spirits, but I consider it quite a feat to win yesterday and finish second today (though back to backs would have totally ruled - not that I need a bigger head).
Anyway, had to vent. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.
