If you happen to watch Jeopardy! tonight, root for my wife, Michele Bassett...
The more good karma you can send the better, since I am not in actual posession of any :D
(p.s. west coasters might not see her episode until thursday.)

Wow! Very cool. Unfortunately, I'm not sure we'll be home tonight to see it, as we have to attend a dinner banquet.
I always assumed these things were taped weeks in advance. Is it a big secret or something?

But didn't they tape the show a couple of months ago? That's typically how they do it.
Maybe by sending good Karma we'll be able to change the fabric of time and warp the outcome?
Or did you just want to brag about your wife being on Jeopardy? If that's the case... Cool! Your wife's on Jeopardy!

*** SPOILER BELOW ***
Woo hoo! She did great! Congratulations!
I got the "best of" version -- I got home about three minutes into the show, and she was in the hole at that point. But she did well, got on a roll, answered a clutch sports question, made a smart wager on a double, recovered from a minor stumble, wagered well on the final question and wrapped up a tidy paycheck. Well done!
Plus, she's a good-looking woman, and she even had enough personality to make her "chat" with Alex interesting (a test that 90% fail). You sure she's married?
Top marks! Will be watching tomorrow!

The more important question...you're sure she's married to Subby?!? ;)
Congrats!

Why on earth is Jeopardy on at 3:30pm in the Chicago area?! Don't most areas show it sometime between the evening news and primetime (right along with Wheel of Fortune)?

I dunno. Both Houston and KC had/have it on during their afternoon.

Here in NY area it airs at 7 followed by Wheel at 7:30. I'm pretty sure it airs at 7:30 in the Myrtle Beach, SC area. I have also seen some places where it airs in the afternoon and then again at night.

Yeah, but in the central time zone, there isn't a 7-8pm hour for filler. Prime time starts at 7pm so the typical setup you see is
5.0 Local News
5.5 National News
6.0 Local News
6.5 Wheel of Fortune
7.0 Start Primetime

Thanks...I definitely married up ;)
I am so proud of her...she was getting crushed for the first 10 minutes - if I hadn't known the outcome I would have thought for sure she was finished.
She almost lost Final Jeopardy...she didn't realize that the middle guy had pulled into second and was about to write down her wager (which you are not allowed to change) when a crew member told them to hold on...she glanced up at the scores again and realized her potential mistakle. A quick re-calculation and she bet the correct amount.
Anyway, I think our kids got her genes, so we are in good shape.

How did she do? I just caught the interview (the episode was on tonight). If you get invited to the ToC, don't you have to win a bunch of times?

You have to win 5 times. Which from what I hear she didn't do, but then Subby mislead us to begin with, so who knows? :D
But....WELL DONE! If I were on, I'd have frozen and stayed frozen, but Michele kicked butt. Now we just need to see her slap Alex into pronouncing her name right ;)

Pumpy Tudors - www.jeopardy.com has a "this week on jeopardy" link on the front page. Videos of the contestants are there.
I gather from the discussion here that she won. Does that mean she is on again tonight? Does that mean you are buying those within driving distance of McLean dinner?

She did well. She won 17k and is on again today/tonight. She did not make the Tournament of Champions, unfortunately. Of course, the fact that she won at all is just amazing to me. I am so proud..
The show is completely no frills - we had to fly her out there (luckily we had enough miles to send her across the country first class) and she also had to pay for her lodging (the Radisson! woohoo!). The staff for the show also works on Wheel of Fortune. They tape five shows per day and I think Alex works 3 months a year or something crazy like that.
All of the prize money she'll end up getting won't come to us until the middle of next spring...so it is fun coming up with ways she can spend it. The nice thing is that even if you don't win, you still get two grand for finishing second and a thousand dollars for finishing third...

that's wicked cool.
in the video, she said she's playing for "stay-at-home moms".
I'm a stay-at-home dad - do I get to claim some of the prize money?

How did she qualify for Jeopardy? That's gotta be a good story. I've had a friend who tries to qualify for it, but they'll never go near where he is (they always seem to have qualifiers in Chicago and Dallas but never in KC and the one time the were in KC, he was in Wichita).

Speaking of Jeopardy, they had this really hot woman on the other night, who happened to win! But when they did the interview, you just got the feeling that she was married to a real schmuck.
Did anyone else get this feeling?

You have to pass a written knowledge test, then a personality test.
If you pass both, which not all that many people do, they may or may not call you. After you pass both tests there's nothing you can do really, and you just have to hope they call.

I've taken the test twice, and passed the second time. If you pass the written test you play a mock game, they ask you about yourself, etc. I guess that's what rpi means by the personality test.
I think somewhere around 1 in 10 that pass the written test typically are called to be on the show. I passed the test I believe in July/August 2001 (doesn't seem that long ago, but I remember the possibility of being on the show around when my daughter was born in May 2002), so they could have called me for the next season. They call 3-4 weeks in advance, so I could have been called through April or May maybe? In any event, I wasn't called.

Even creepier- I start hearing bad 70s porn music in my head replaced by the Jeopardy music a few seconds in.

Subby, do I assume that the check will be minus the 45% in taxes?

Yes - and that's just what California takes out ;)
I would take exception to Tasan's assertion that she bet poorly. I think in her position she had to bet that way - you have to assume that the folks behind you will get the question right and bet the farm. How much would it suck to get the question right but only lose because you bet 0?
Of course this is of little consolation to my wife. :D
Anyway...I couldn't be more proud. She rules.

Quite a nice job. I feel kindof dumb for missing that question in Final Jeopardy. I was chatting with a friend on AIM about it and I couldn't believe I couldn't think of it, especially after having an astronomy class last semester. d'oh

I back this up - she bet right, and outplayed the field again - just ran into a stumper question, unfortunately. (The second-place person bet correctly, too, regrettably)
I also back up that she rules. Way to go, Michele!

If that were the case, I'd take the Jeopardy test a whole lot more often ;)
For some reason I seem to remember knowing my wife was pregnant already when I took the test, so maybe my dates are a little off, might have been September. In any event, my daughter was a concerted effort :) (now that should really creep you out SI)
