TotalProFootball and maximum-football were the focus of an "Are You Ready for Some indie Football" article in Jan 2004 issue of PC GAMER. Just received my copy. Nothing new, but nice to see the coverage. No mention of FOF2K4 at all.

The intro ended with this:

"Here's the inside scoop of two of the better-looking independant football games."

That was my thought exactly when I read the article. It talks about how Europe has Championship Manager and that the US is making strides into that market, and totally ignores FOF. I blame that on the writer of the story more than .400, obviously (why give any credence to the competition?), but, anyway, it was very disappointing.

That's not the writers fault. If Jim wants the game to be hyped, he needs to send promo copies to PC Gamer.

Because that's how it works. You think that these companies actually go and buy these games, and pay attention to FOFC? Jim may or may not send them promo copies. I have no idea. But do you think .400 took the game to PC Gamer, or vice-versa? Smaller companies need to push their games like mad, and I'm guessing that's what .400 did. Good for them.

These games need to be hyped by their respective companies for the games to receive attention like that.

You think if a small-time record label put out the newest Outkast CD, that it would be hailed as one of the best albums of the year? Probably not, as hardly anyone here would know about it.

Which is why I found it odd that the writer didn't even mention the series. rexallllsc missed my point.

Maybe he's not into it? Maybe they think the game is small-time compared to CM and TPF? Those aren't necessarily my thoughts, but I can see how the writer could think that.

No, I think it's more of a case of bad journalism. But then again -- and no offense to the seemingly hundreds of of game writers here on FOFC -- the word "journalist" and "game reviewer" don't really belong in the same sentence. The vast majority are hacks who do little more than retype press releases and don't do much "reporting." Good, PC Gamer is as close to the equivalent of a journalistic blow job as you're every going to get.

PC Gamer defiantly know about FOF. I first heard about FOF in an article about the future of sports gaming in PC Gamer.

Just because somebody at PC Gamer has heard of FOF doesn't mean that the person who wrote this particular article knows about it. Hell, for all I know, the first person at PC Gamer to mention FOF may not even work there anymore.

Yep. Everyone @ PC Gamer should know about ever single game in the genre.

It's partially my fault, though it's likely this issue was finished before I announced FOF 2004.

I didn't tell PC Gamer about FOF 2004 because last year they did review the game and while it received a decent score, I felt the reviewer really had no interest in the genre. He lost his CD key twice.

While I'd like to think they should know about my work, as rexall said, I'd hate to get to the point where I'm arrogant enough to really believe it.

PC Gamer has never been involved in the indie sports sim world, and it's encouraging that they're interested enough now to write a preview. I'll send them a note tonight. Maybe that interest has translated into actually finding a reviewer who cares about the genre.

There was a time when PC Gamer was good magazine... :(

Twice? Yup, that pretty much sums up my thoughts on the competence of the average PC Gamer employee. (I used to subscribe and read it religiously. It has degraded into a pile of donkey...well, you know.)

Jim, send a note to the grownups at Computer Games as oppose to the kids at PC Gamer and CGW. :)

I still think PC Gamer is and always will be the front runner for computer games review. Computer Games is trash.

Well, regardless of anybody's opinion about each individual magazine, the more exposure for each game, and the genre as a whole, the better. I'd say it would be pretty silly to be choosy about what magazine it is in; no matter what, that exposure will bring more sales and more people into the genre.

Reviews are all the same, it's the articles and columns that makes the biggest and most noticeable difference. For instance, how many computer game magazines have a regular column of applied game theory written by two MIT scholars (part of the Playful Learning Project)? I would suspect this would be over the head of every single reader of PCG and CGW and sometimes, even over my head.

I got bored with PC Gamer a few yrs ago. Maybe its just because I got old and didnt fit the demographic anymore. Im not into shoot-em-ups or the latest thug racing games or the latest movie rip-off games, so that left very little in there for me to read.

Maybe its me or maybe they narrowed their target audience down enough to eliminate old farts like me, or maybe the mag does just suck now, I dont know.

I'm with you, uglytuco....they mostly cater to an audience that cares more about the "experience" itself than the actual merits and details of the gameplay. It's a major reason I don't bother trying to design shooter games or 3D RTS type games; i'm not into them much myself, so why would I try to make one? :)

IMHO, If cool explosions or running over/shooting things aren't your idea of interesting gameplay, PC Gamer won't have much of interest to read (and as a developer, you also know your rating won't be all that high).
