As usual, a load of crap...

Grammy Nominees (http://www.grammyawards.com/awards/grammy/46noms.aspx)

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance:

Sting - old
Michael McDonald - old...and hey, is this for his CD or commercial?
George Harrison - dead
Warren Zevon - dead
Justin Timberlake - uh, he's Justin Timberlake!

Best "new" artist - Fountains of Wayne! For its 3rd album! From the band that wrote That Thing You Do, which is so old, Tom Hanks hadn't started looking fat yet! "Public identity", my ass. I'm not sure if that's an indictment of the masses of people who wouldn't know good music if it hit them in the face, or the record companies/radio stations who refused to promote/play their older stuff. I'll just go with both.

Bah. This kind of crap puts me in a bad mood, in case you couldn't tell.

I can't believe the FoW nomination as well. It's ridiculous.

I do like the Hillary Clinton nomination for best spoken word performance, however. :)

Any award program that puts Justin Timberlake in the same class with Georgre Harrison and Sting should not be taken seriously on any level other than satire.

Me and 2 friends spent about an hour going insane of this yesterday. They've release 2 MAJOR LABEL albums prior to this... WTF?

If I had any shred of respect left for the Grammy's, it's out the window entierly now. This crap plus the usual token nominations for dead guys (Zevon, Harrison) just destroy any image of legitimacy.

All in all, I'm happy for FOW though. Any attention they can garner is well-deserved, and they could probably use the album sales. But I would love to see them win the award and be like "Ummm, we've been around a while."

I suggest they go to a full time "dead people" category. Then they could have thrown Zevon and Harrison there, tossed in Cash and Strummer, and as a wild card throw in Starsailor (Phil Spector produced - he's eligible here since he killed someone rather than dying himself).

The whole FoW deal makes me think about the year they gave the best heavy metal award to Jethro Tull. Pretty sad when the supposed ultimate award of music doesn't even know how to distinguish between different types of music or know that one of it's own nominees shouldn't even be eligible for the category nominated for.

I lost all respect for the Grammy's when they finally created a heavy metal category in 1989 - like a year or so before grunge killed it off - let Metallica perform - the first heavy metal band to score a top 40 album without so much as a single minute of mainstream airplay - then gave the award to Jethro Tull. That just cannot be beat. Ever.

Oh, and Starsailor has a new album coming out in January, I think. I've seen promo emails for it. Supposedly, if you have an older CD, you can go to their site, put your CD in the computer, and hear 4 new songs and see one new video.

Is it troubling that I seem to have thoughts way too similar to several people who post here?

Let's see what the nominees link provides in categories I either know or care about ... the various country, bluegrass & harder rock genres.

Country looks like a mix of nods to the dead/dying (June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash), critical favorites that nobody buys or plays (Ray Benson, Willie Nelson duets, Lyle Lovett), and commercial success (Shania Twain).

On the bright side, there's some quality stuff included in there for one reason or another.

Randy Travis & Joe Nichols are worthy for male vocal performance; collaboration with vocals is unusually strong with Nelson/Norah Jones, Nelson/Toby Keith, Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett all nominated (and likely to lose to the Cash's);

4 of 5 song of the year nominees are reasonable, but the album of the year category is almost embarassing with nothing particularly worthy IMO.

The bluegrass album list is awfully good, although I'm not wild about having 2 live & 1 holiday project chosen as the best of the bunch.

Hard rock performance, rock album & rock song all appeas to have a lot of commercial bias (maybe they're played & bought so much because they're the best of a bad lot, who knows?) but nominating St.Anger for anything other than sorriest excuse for a song pretty much reduces the metal performance category to a sad joke.
All in all, looks like more of the same ol' same ol' from the Grammys, but maybe they'll get lucky & pick some deserving winners from amongst a good bit of chaff.

I think it has been a shame that Johnny Cash had been shunned for so many years by the country music community and now all of a sudden after his death they all act like he had been this revered this whole time.

Jon I wish I could find that link Ksyrup gave with the St. Anger parody, it was hilarious and way better than the original.

Edit: Thanks!

I'm glad to see Outkast getting a lot of respect... I'm not sure it's exactly my style of music, but the production and orchestration impresses me as much as anything since... maybe Prince's best work (also not exactly my cup of tea, but impressive nonetheless).

Is their any institution that the Simpsons hate more than the Grammys? i can't remember all the great scenes, but I do remember:

"Gee, thanks mister! Oh, wait, its a graaaamy." *throws award into the trash*

*Homer throws his grammy off his hotel balcony and someone throws it back to him*

Hip Hop is the only area of pop music that is probably on the rise right about now. Some of the more artistic groups are getting some notice now (The Roots are also nominated, Black Eyed Peas). I'm all for more of the actual music breaking through, and less of the sample laden gangsta rap.

I need some education here. I always thought hip hop was basically describing rap, which I hate. But Outkast is considered hip hop, and I really like them, and they are certainly not rap. So exactly what is the difference between hip hop, R&B, and rap? Is it like the difference between metal, punk, and grunge (which I'm sure rap and hip hop guys would probably have a hard time distinguishing)?

Well, I would say Hip Hop is a fairly generic term, almost on par with rock or "modern rock."

You should check out all music guide, an amazing website. Here's a specific link the the urban/hip hop genre (and it's many sub-genres).

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70311101436250101&sql=C4483

You're pretty much right on with your grunge/metal/punk comparision. And even within one of those genres, you can split them up even finer (metal has a zillion sub-genres). AMG has a pretty comprehensive section on music styles on the website, definitely worth taking a look.

Saw the nomination list and wasn't most the people (and most that I was it was due to having the displeasure of being introduced to them).

Christopher Carrabba not getting nominated for Best Male Vocal Performance is almost as surprising as Swing, Swing being left out of song of the year and So Long, Astoria being left of album of the year.

And the music industry blames 'piracy' on album sales being lower than they think they should.
