I have a PS2, but it's getting kind of long in the tooth and with my kids beating the heck out of it, I'm afraid it's on it's last legs.

I'm thinking about buying an X-Box for Christmas for my...ahem...kids. Is an X-Box worth buying? Or is there a PS3 or something right around the corner that's going to hit the shelves the second I buy an X-Box?

So I guess my choices are

1. Just hang on to the PS2 until it dies, something bigger and better is right around the corner.

or

2. Add an X-Box, it's worth it and anyways nothing is coming out for another year or more.

Any help would be appreciated.

The bigger and better is still at least a couple of years away.

Get a Gamecube for the kids and yourself. :)

There's only one good reason to buy the Xbox in my opinion - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Since that's already on PC, I would just stick with the PS2.

Xbox is my console of choice. But if your only reason for delay is waiting for the next-gen...it won't be here for about 2-3 years. Buy another system (whatever that may be).

Christmas 2005 is the early estimate on the next gen consoles so that's a good 2 years wait.

If you think you are getting Disk read errors, this link might be of some help

To sum it up, you call up sony and complain a little and they should waive the repair costs. From what I understand, Sony put a lot of substandard parts in their early PS2 models and are willing to fix most for free.

Just as long as you havent modded it or anything.

The next playstation which will have TIVO, DVD-R functions, a harddrive as well as PS2 technology should be out sometime next year. However, it will still play games exactly like PS2 per reports. The PS3 and other true next generation consoles aren't due out until at least Christmas 2005. Personally, I think if you have a large library of games (or even a decent size one) you should purchase another playstation. If I only had a very small library of games, then I would be tempted by the X-Box.

Just to clarify, this is the PSX he is talking about. Like everyone else is saying, the PS3 won't be out for another couple years.

I have a PS2 and Xbox, and for the most part, I seem to play the PS2 much more often. But right now I am in football mode, and the 2 main football games I have are PS2. Some day I will actually start playing Halo...:)

I think you should buy a Dreamcast.

Not to mention, Sony removed several features from the PSX Japanese release, and i wouldn't be at all surprised if they wound up doing the same thing for the North American release next year.
