Sound – 1 of 5 stars: There is none. You don’t need sound to play this game at all, but I have played text based games that had sound used through out the game and in my opinion it helps make the game more immersive and exciting, especially during the play-by-play. Crowd noise, tackle sounds, announcer’s all could be added to make it feel more like you are at the game or listening to it on the radio. For that matter no game like this has done the play-by-play with voice. That would be something I would like to see in the future.

Wouldn’t no sound pretty much equal a 0 instead of a 1?

Also, APBA Baseball used the voice of Ernie Harwell for the radio style PbP and that was many years ago.

Really I never heard of APBA Baseball, but then I again I hate baseball and baseball sims might be why.

Good point on the sound thing, but 0 stars would be like a wash, as in a NA. 1 star is the lowest rating we give, so that is there to show the disapointment. Either way, its a shame no sound is in the game.

If I remember right, someone gave TCY a 3 out of 10 for sound as well.

Gamespot gave TCY a 4 out of 10 I believe.

If FOF had sound, the games would sim slower. No good. =P

I thought that was a very informative and fair review, both with its praises and criticisms.

Yeah I thought it was a fair review as well, I totally agree with the step by step pbp and the nicer interface, that would make this game untouchable for at least a few years.

There wouldn't be any sound during simming, only while playing out a game.

I can just listen to a CD while I play. Now my sound is 5/5. ;)

 !

Only the greatest board game of all time. It rans circles around Stratomatic. I played over 2000 games of the 1986 American League season when I was in 6th grade. I still can remember saving any matchups between Jack Morris/Jimmy Key/and Dennis Rasmussen for prime time. I probably have a few audio tapes of those games laying around my parent's house somewhere. Any other APBA board game players on here?

I played Status-Pro, but I understand the sentiment.

I don't know what you're talking about, I love the sound with this game! I can listen to whatever CD's and mp3's i want without some crappy, sound effects constantly pissing me off. :) If you want NFL inspired music maybe try picking up some NFL Films music compilations or something?

Having sound effects in a sports sim isn't quite on the level of Bucc's "one open window at a time" idea (only because there would be work-arounds to this), but its definately on my top 10 worst ideas for the FOF series list. :)

DOLA, having said that I'm all for adding things like as long as they are optional.

APBA did football as well. Don't tell me you've heard of APBA Football, but not APBA baseball?

Wasn't this the guy that was banned? Did SkyDog ban a game reviewer? I find that humorous for some reason. :D

Just saw this. I was HUGE into APBA baseball as a kid. Started with a tired old version from 1961 (yup, THAT season) that my Dad got from a friend. Picked it up in the mid 1970s and then on through the mid-1980s. Drafted my own teams, crunched the stats, and so on.

Any APBA player knows the magic code of 66, eh? :D

Don't think he was banned. Just disliked.

Well, at least by me.

I was in an APBA league for a few seasons before it folded. It was a league that lasted for 25 years. It started with a Washington division and an Oregon division. All stats were kept for each player in the league for each year. It was quite an ordeal as all stats were kept by hand and all games played at the house of the home team's owner. When i joined it was down to six teams with no divisions. I lost the last world series played in the league. The league folded half way through the next season. Now I feel like a league killer.

I played Strat-O-Matic for years as a kid, starting with the 1982 season. I kept my own stats on homemade stat sheets, and got about halfway through playing every game for the entire season before I gave up. I played the first couple of versions of the computer game in the early 90's, but when my mind began wandering to "I wish I could go on to next season," I lost interest in replays.

Defintely know the 6-6 and the 14*. I most looked forward to the 23 or the 41. I think those were the highlights of me and my buddy's years of APBA. Nothing like a huge fight or injury to a key player unless they were the boring j-0. I tried to get into the master game, but it was just too complex to do it for me.

I also remember me and my friends made up cards for ourselves to simulate our backyard nerfball games. (This was well before the days of computer generated cards. I can't even imagine what APBA is like nowadays) I will never forget how pissed our one buddy (no power at all) was when we created his card with a 6-6 "2". I think my card even had a 4-4 "1" but a lot of 13's also!

Only a true APBA player would understand any of this talk!

Ok, I think I can outgeek some of you with this..

In the mid 80s I took my D&D dice and created my own football game, which had I think 18 teams.. I played every game, kept all the stats, even created a graph sheet to track every play of every game..

I had a great time and stuff. Really. :)

I love APBA football. I played this all the time befoe I found the original FOF. Since then it has been mostly FOF, but a friend of mine comes over every now and again with a case a beer and it's GAME ON, APBA STYLE.

I'm with you on all of it. And I totally agree with the 41 thing. That was the beauty of the Master Game, though - it had the Rare Play (RP) boards which were chock full of all kinds of goodies like that. I remember the sense of awe I felt when 2B Don Money (yeah, I'm ancient, I know) turned an unassisted triple play.

Great memories!
