I usually agree with most of what's written on their website. Today, there was something that kind of confused me though.

They were talking about the Bengals locking up Chad Johnson for five more years. They made the point that he should have been signed a couple of weeks ago so the bonus could have started on the 2003 cap number, instead of the 2004 number.

I was with them for most of that point. Then they wrote a "quote" from a scout:

Yeah, the guy is good. But not that good. Plus, most of the time this guy has been playing the team is behind . . . against a prevent defense. With that scenario no wonder he gets so many balls-especially since most of their other receivers suck."

OK, who in the hell is this guy scouting for? Has he watched a Bengal game this season? Lets look at some clear cut facts:

1) The Bengals have only been behind by a lot of points in one game this season. The opening week. They are currently sitting at 4-5 with an OT loss, a three point loss at Oakland, a 7 point loss to the Steelers and a 3 point loss to the Cardinals. Johnson has scored 4 of his 5 TD's in Cincy wins, including the game winning TD catch against the Seahawks.

2) While the other Cincy WR may not be the best in the world, Peter Warrick is having a fantastic year. He has only a couple of catches less than Johnson and has played well all year. Combined, the two Cincy WR have 94 catches for 1271 yards. Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne have combined for 96 catches and 1297 yards.

3) He's currently third in yards for all WR in the NFL, trailing only Moss and Holt. If we take his last 7 games from 2002 and combine them with his first 9 from this year, you get these numbers:

83 cathces, 1515 yards, 18.25 yards per catch, 7 TD.

Granted, the TD numbers probably need to go up a tad, but I'm pretty sure we could all live with those numbers in our FOFC online leagues. :)

Maybe they should have waited until early next year to give the extension, but I don't see how locking this guy up now is a bad thing.

Agree.
Fun also to see that while the Cincy scouts made Peter Warrick a top5 overall pick in the Draft, they made Johnson "nothing more" than a 2nd rounder (with the money that goes with it) and he's now their #1 WR.

Proof that these guys (the scouts) don't know that much, or AS MUCH as they think to do/make you think they do.

Same for the Niners actually, they used the #10 overall pick in Stokes in '95 only to take Owens has "nothing more than" a 3rd round pick the very next year. And look now. Owens has established himself has the 2nd most productive WR in 49er history while Stokes has been a perennial disapointement in his 8 years in San Fran, and how now just been cut once more, this time by the Jags.

Scouts are what their are...boy scouts.
