I'm thinking about subscribing to one of these online gaming sites and wondered which one is better for content and coverage?

IGN is only $19.95/yr or $5.95/mo.

Gamespot is $24.95/yr or $4.95/mo.


I like both sites, but with E3 going on, I want to see some movies of games I'm pumped about... we all know that's not free.



Anyone a member of one/both of these sites? If so, are you happy with the coverage and content?

sometimes the info is really good sometimes i wonder why i wasted my time reading it

Just watching videos of the latest and greatest would be a plus for me.

I subscribe to IGN and am happy with it. However, I don't download movies at all, so I can't help on that part of your question.

I dont know why I have to pay for info that should be free .

I agree, but if I want to see some movies of Madden, HL2, NHL 2004, etc.. I need to purchase at least a month's membership.

I think I'm going with Gamespot, I like the way everything is laid out on their site.

I like IGN better, but I think I really like IGN from 3 years ago better. Right now I think they are about equal. Gamespot has better news coverage in general, IGN has better reviews in general. But, Gamespot has Reader Reviews just a click away, and IGN does a better job of sniffing out and reporting on cool "B" games. If it is just for E3, I would probably go with Gamespot's superior reporting.

As for why one would have to pay for infromation that should be free, it is the same logic by which people pay for magazines, newspapers, etc. A. You are paying for someone to look for, screen through, digest, and present the information to you in a useful and conveinent fashion. B. You are paying for the medium by which the information is transmited, since you are not psychically gleening said information from the ether.

If it is just for E3, I would probably go with Gamespot's superior reporting.


Bingo! EXACTLY what I want it for. I finally get to see NCAA 2004 movies, Half Life 2 movies, Madden 2004 movies, SSX 3 movies, etc...

I have dial up modem so trying to DL those movies would take months .

I subscribe to Gamespot but one of the main reasons why is so I can have a high-speed download service. I believe FilePlanet charges close to fifty dollars a year while you can get the same demos, game videos, patches, map packs, etc. at Gamespot for twenty something dollars a year. The E3 videos are pretty cool but I wish they were better quality, I'd gladly lengthen the download time for better quality full-screen videos. I've found IGN useful for some games though. In particular, the title specific MMORPG message boards. Very smart community with some of the titles and you can find out a lot about the games.
