Hi everyone, I have talked to some of you already in my "NZ Football" thread.

I have a confession to make. Please noone be mad.

Firstly, I would like to say that yes I do enjoy watching football and that everything I said in that thread was absolutely true and correct.

However, my motive was this:

I am a first year student studying a Batchelor of Communications Studies.

I wanted to enter a forum to help assist me with an assignment I am working on. The "jist" of it is, can you hide your gender on line, and if so, what consequences (if any) will it have on your communications.

Did any of you get a feeling as to whether I am male or female? I have tried very hard to sound nuetral in my gender.

Fact is, its been really really hard. SO that is something I can write about. I am in fact a female. And as such, I normally write in a certain style. For instance, when I got my first replies on the thread, my natural instinct was to thank people for writing - but I thought that wasn't very man-like so I didnt.

What do you reckon? Do you think you can tell if someone is a guy or a girl on line? I think if I had written naturally you would definately have been able to tell I was a girl. For starters, it would have probably effected how we were talking about a men's game I know nothing about.

I hope noone minded being in my little experiment, for what its worth I have really liked FOF.

If you feel like talking about this, I'd be really interested in any comments anyone has to make.

Well, to address this slightly, I'm not mad. Why be? You haven't lied about anything, no false pretenses. In fact, stick around, in creating a decent discussion, you're one up on a lot of us. ;)

My personal 'assumption' was that you were a guy - not so much because of tone, but because of the typical demographic of this board (from what I have heard :D) is male. That's an assumption I typically make of just about anyone on the board, unless they have a username (yours is ambivalent), or some other key phrase that makes me think so. Even your thanking people wouldn't have done it for me - while that may not be a 'guy' thing to do, it's something that I personally would have attributed to someone who is a newbie on the boards, and honestly, someone from elsewhere. I'm in Atlanta, GA; and have accepted that people outside the US typically have different reactions/phrasings than I do - a few days reading the Championship Manager board would have given that away. :D

On a messageboard it's hard to do - I think I'm decent at being able to tell gender apart in a conversation, say over instant messenger or whatnot, but in a general conversation where the words aren't necessarily directed at someone in particular, it's harder to tell.

Yes, I am extremely hot (joke) but currently very stressed, so wrinkles are a likely possibility! Today I have decided I hate varisty -although I think its just a bit of winter blues. Had very big weekend in auckland drinking pretty pink cocktails with my brother (he wasnt drinking the pretty pink cocktails) so I think I am probably just tired and disgruntled.

This forum has been great. I've heard of some of my classmates having terrible times and getting abused etc. (that was without confessing their motives).

Actually Radii, one thing that really struck and surprised me about this forum is how polite ppl are. My overall impression has been that everyone has been really helpful.

To answer your other question (that I forgot about), I wear briefs. One day, I'll probably graduate to boxer briefs.

Boxer-briefs are the way to go. But, because my wife and I are trying to have a baby, I am wearing boxers now full-time. I hate them.

There is just no organization down there. It just goes where it wants to go, when it wants to go there.

I can't wait to impregnante my wife so I can go back to boxer-briefs again!

That's why the testes are located where they are (away from the body) instead of being inside the body. Some people have problems with fertility when wearing briefs since they keep the testes nice and snug up against the body, and therefore above prime development temperature...

Its a funny old concept, men are supposed to be uncommunicative and yet they dominate cyberspace. Some theories say it is because woman are scared of electricity (power tools etc! - although we like ovens and microwaves). Others say it is because of power. Men were happy with woman being allowed to use the typewritter but when computer's were developed they decided that they would dominate them. Other's say its because there is such a big "nerd culture" of boys. - Can I just say, i don't agree with these theories. One thing I have been introduced to at Varsity is the concept of male-bashing feminism - & and dont like it!!

Personally I think its because women just LOVE TALKING and prefer to pick up the phone. Also I think woman communicate on a more personal level, ie spill their stories whereas men prefer to talk about.....football and tell jokes!! As such, woman are a little timid of getting on the internet and talking about their favourite topics, love, sex, lies and gossip!

Perhaps you have more female lurkers than you are aware of. How long has FOC been going for? How many people participate.

I don't know, I would say you would have more success testing your theory that people will assume you're a guy on a board that has more than 3 female posters. I mean, since there are hardly any women, it would make sense that no one would guess you are one, even if you did things like thank them for answering a question (I don't even know if that's a female tendency).

On other message boards I go to, it's about 50/50 men and women, and for the most part, it's pretty difficult to guess the gender of posters, and in discussions it's come up that most people assume that you are the same gender as them unless told otherwise.

Oh, and speaking as one of the other female posters, I gotta warn you that everyone will forget you're a girl, and every time it comes up, they'll all be shocked all over again. If my boyfriend is any indication, text sim guys remember insane details about whatever career they've got going, but forget everything else :)

now i hope someone can do me one last favour, I think skydog is the man for the task, can you pls tell me if the forum is moderated adn if so how? I am new to this chickclick stuff and have no idea what moderated even means.

So guys, I think I will probably keep checking up on you after my assignment is finished. Its been a blast. Im looking forward to asking you all for some advice of my own in the future.

Yes, the forum is moderated by SkyDog and Ryan S (who is too good to hang out with losers like us. ;) ) Basically what that means is they make sure no one breaks any of the rules. If they do, they give them warnings and if needed, bannings.

They also can created new sections for the forum, delete sections, etc.

This is another one of those threads that I hadn't been paying much attention to, and after checking it out again, it has turned into a classic. :)
