I don't know if this is the right place for it, but it occurs to me that Dolphins fans have to feel worse than any other fan base right now.

The Dolphins had the inside track on Drew Brees and ended up with Daunte Culpepper.

The Dolphins had the inside track on Mike Tomlin and ended up with Cam Cameron.

I mean, the Super Bowl has basically become a showcase of players and coaches that the Dolphins passed on.

Sucks for a proud franchise.

Yes, we suck. We also went from a horrible owner to another horrible owner(s). Not much hope for us. We'll probably pass up on McNabb or Palmer (if available), and probably sign Ryan Leaf.

That's been fixed now - GB beat writer reported bout half hour ago that they will be taking the photo on Friday now to include them.

I can see why the IR players would want to be in it (of course they deserve to be) but it was quite an overblown story.

The reason they weren't going to do it was because there was some fear that because there were so many people on IR (15) and because the IR guys weren't subject to team rules like curfew and such.. they didn't want that many potentially running around for 4 days causing a distraction to the active guys.

Of course, then they get this 'distraction'.

This is why the two weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl are terrible

Packers, Steelers, Roger Goodell in spotlight as Super Bowl nears - Peter King - SI.com (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/peter_king/01/30/super-bowl-week/index.html?eref=sihp)

"The one thing I take a little bit of issue with is when guys tell me they're being screwed,'' Goodell said. "[Most often] they're not recognizing they have a role in it.'' Regarding Roethlisberger, Goodell said when he was investigating what to do with the quarterback, he talked to "I bet two dozen players ... Not one, not a single player, went to his defense. It wasn't personal in a sense, but all kinds of stories like, 'He won't sign my jersey.' ''

Clarification: Roger Goodell on Ben Roethlisberger sanction - Super Bowl XLV - SI.com (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/super-bowl-2011/01/31/clarification/index.html)

In a Jan. 7 interview for a larger profile on Goodell for this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, Goodell was talking about his deliberations for the Roethlisberger sanctions last year, when the Pittsburgh quarterback was accused of sexual misconduct in connection with an incident at a Georgia bar. Goodell said when he was investigating what to do with Roethlisberger, he talked to "I bet two dozen players ... Not one, not a single player, went to his defense. It wasn't personal in a sense, but all kinds of stories like, 'He won't sign my jersey.' ''
I inserted the word "Steelers'' in parentheses, though Goodell had not told me specifically he meant to refer to two dozen Steelers players.
My question prior to his answer referred to the "many people I know in Pittsburgh'' who "want him on the Steelers.'' I thought Goodell was referring to speaking with two dozen Steelers. He clarified late Monday that he was not referring to the Steelers specifically.
I regret the error.

The "clarification" is just so asinine.

So, during the deliberations of if/how long to suspend Roethlisberger, Goodell thought it was a good idea to to consult players from other teams?

"Mr. Lewis...yes, it's the commissioner. Have any thoughts on how long to suspend Mr. Roethlisberger? 16 games...ok thanks....can you pass the phone to Mr. Reed, please?"

I don't remember this happening with Pacman, etc. I am sure Ben would have loved to been consulted on what to do with Favre.

My twitter feed is mostly national NFL writers. This morning, all they can talk about is how cold it is in Dallas.

Two thoughts:

(1) Of course it's cold, idiots. The Super Bowl should be rotated between Miami, New Orleans, and San Diego for all time. That's a no-brainer. You should not plan a logistically enormous event during February in a city likely to get cold. Just like you should not, e.g., plan such an event during hurricane season and put it in Miami or New Orleans.

Put the SB in Miami, San Diego, and New Orleans. Period.

(2) All that said, complaining about the weather when you are at Super Bowl media day seems a bit misplaced. Focus on how awesome it is that you are at the Super Bowl.

Seriously. I love that football is a game for REAL MEN and we can rip on a team for not wanting to kill it's fans or play in front of 150 people when there's a blizzard outside... except for the Super Bowl, where everybody has a tantrum if it's played in less than 70 degrees and perfect sunshine.

albionmoonlight
02-01-2011, 08:49 AM
The Super Bowl is way more than a game. It is a week-long party/logistical nightmare. It seems prudent to avoid areas where ice storms and/or blizzards are possible.

I understand the arguments for letting it go across the country--it is a great bribe to help encourage public financing of new stadiums. But those arguments do not overcome the simple fact that week-long parties in February are better held in San Diego, Miami, and New Orleans.

Enjoy the weather in Indy and New York in a few years.

Fan comfort is probably number 99 on a list of 100 things the NFL cares about for the Super Bowl. 1 - 98 on the list have to deal with money in some way. This is Jerry's reward for building the Pharoah Dome. If Anchorage built a 2 billion dollar stadium backed by 100 corporations and created 100,000 hotel rooms, the Super Bowl would be there too...

I don't like the idea of playing games in pristine conditions for the Super Bowl. So a bunch of whiny writers/reports are complaining about the cold weather. Boo hoo. Go follow baseball.

Teams have to play in terrential downpours, whiteouts, muddy slop fields, etc. to get to the Super Bowl. It gives the game character. I guess the idea is to play in perfect conditions for a "better game" but it gives faster spread teams an advantage. Poor conditions would give certain other teams an advantage, but at least it would be semi-random.

I guess I'm just not on board with the "more points equals more excitement" bandwagon. I enjoy a good, old-fashioned 9-7 final score game just as much as 27-31, for example.

TBH, Legursky wouldn't do as bad as everyone thinks against BJ. Legs is compact (read: leverage) and surprisingly strong for his size. His weakness is getting to the second level to make blocks. This is where Pouncey excels.

Against a 4-3, Pouncey is the obvious favorite because of his ability to double down on the tackle then successfully pick up a backer.

Against a 3-4, it is more of a wash. Legs can't move players off the ball like Pouncey can, but he will hold his ground in a phone booth. Besides, the center generally receives a double from a guard against a 3-4 nose. Those guys are too strong to handle alone when it is vital to the plays success.

I have even read that Legursky has slightly better reads. As long as he and Ben can get the center-QB exchange down (2 fumbled snaps last week), I am confident we will be fine.

Honestly, I think Hampton against Wells is the bigger mismatch when it comes to NT vs. C, but no one is talking about that.

Take all this with a grain of salt, however, as I am much more familiar with the Steelers 34 2 gap responsibilities of the NT as opposed to Capers 34 1 gap system.

I think it's a coin flip, but the Steelers are marginally better (at best) than GB on defense. Pitt was #1 in scoring D and #2 in yards on D. GB was #2 in scoring and #5 on yards. If you look at the playoffs, GB has played much better on D against much better offenses on the road. In their first 2 games, GB held the #2 and #5 scoring offenses (Philly and Atl) to an average of 18 points - both on the road. The Steelers allowed over 20 PPG to middle of the pack offenses in home games.

Pittsburgh may win the game, but it's not because they have a much better defense or DC than GB. On personnel, scheme and coordinator, both teams seem pretty equal. The only difference in experience, and that may end up being why Pittsburgh wins if they do pull it out. Still, I see a close game and one that could go either way.

Aaron Rodgers vs Steelers secondary or Mendenhall vs Packers run defense especially to the outside. I would speculate these two matchups decide this game.

I dont see the Steelers passing the ball well against the Packers top rated passing defense nor do I see the Packers getting anything via the run against the Steelers great run defense.

The worst of it is if it's like the last few Super Bowl's, we aren't going to see either team in top form. The way that they played in the last few games could be shot to hell with the two week break. In fact, I can't remember when the last time a team looked really good in the Super Bowl.

Each team is going to make some mistake, leave a hole for the other. Which ever team can seize upon that error may take the game. I still haven't seen the Steelers play a full 60 minutes, and that worries me. Even if Green Bay comes out totally flat and they dominate the first half, it still won't be enough. Something big is going to happen. Something big that nobody saw coming, that is going to be what changes the game.

A lot of the Steelers passing yardage comes from "broken plays", where the pass rush gets to Ben, he makes a guy miss, then throws downfield. So, if they get to Ben and make the tackle, then I agree with you. Nobody has down that consistently yet.

On top of that, I expect alot of those plays to be to Heath Miller. He'll chip on Matthews, then release to the spot Matthews just left.

I don't think GB will get anything on the ground, because I don't expect them to even try. Maybe a handful of draw plays after 10 straight passes, but they'd be silly to line up in an I, 2 TE etc and try and run.

Arles
02-03-2011, 04:23 PM
I think it depends what Pittsburgh does. If they come out in a bunch of nickel packages to stop the pass, I could see GB running. If they come out in base, I think GB likes the WR matchups and probably will pass more. That said, McCarthy loves to run - even if GB is only getting 2 ypc so you never know ;)

Mustang

Don't confuse run with try to run. Even if they get 2-3 yards, they will still try to get 25 runs in and view 75 yards on the ground as a success.

He says he could not say why those injured were at the stadium.

Another blast of winter weather slammed Dallas with up to 5 inches of snow Friday, making driving hazardous and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights as tens of thousands of football fans descended on North Texas for the Super Bowl.

I am not sure if this is the right spot for this but......

Nothing like an old-fashioned celebrity slapfight to spice up Super Bowl weekend.

What should have been a light-hearted autograph signing at a pre-Super Bowl event turned nasty when CBS analyst Phil Simms and ESPN's Desmond Howard had a heated exchange, as reported by Sports by Brooks.

Howard took to Twitter to explain what happened after police reportedly intervened to stop the scuffle

"At NFL-Xperience and Phil Simms just threatened 2 hit me b/c I said his son was 1 of the worse QBs in the SEC. I told him 'LET'S GO!' "

Simms was upset with Howard over comments the "College GameDay" host made regarding Simms' son, Matt, who plays quarterback for Tennessee.

"During the season we talked about the Tenn vs LSU game and I said 'u will see 3 of the worse QBs in the SEC' That's what Phil did not like," Howard tweeted. "It ended w/police stepping in between so I could continue my appearance."

However, Simms -- an ex-Super Bowl winning quarterback with the New York Giants -- had a different view of the events.

"Desmond and I were having a private conversation that became heated. But at no time was there ever a chance of any physical confrontation or that I felt the police officer assigned to me by the event planners for my appearance needed to separate the two of us,' Simms told Brooks in a statement through CBS.

Soon after Simms' remarks went public, Howard released a statement of his own through his employer:

"I was at a public signing for a sponsor when Phil approached me to express anger over on-air analysis I made months ago about his son, Tennessee QB Matt Simms. During the conversation, Phil made a reference to hitting me and security and sponsor representatives soon stepped in.
"It was an unfortunate incident and I'm moving on."

I've been looking for a Super Bowl timeline.. anyone see one? (the one that says what time the National Anthem is, coin flip, etc, etc..)

I would like to know that too, i'm still deciding if i'm going to stay up to 5am to watch it or if i'll watch it tomorrow without reading anything about the outcome.

In the past the SB was a big event for me at home. My wife knew i was waiting for that date for a whole year, and we had a deal made so the next day she would wake up with our kid to let me sleep and recover, but this year... i'm not specially fan of any of the two teams, i'm wasted after playing a full soccer game 3 hours ago, my kid is sick with fever so probably he will wake up a few times tonight and i don't want my wife to take care of him alone, and i want to finish some work tomorrow instead of wasting the whole morning sleeping.

Also I must admit that with the crap years by the Dolphins and maybe also the lack of new football text sims to keep the hooked, i'm also losing a bit of interest on football while my soccer passion is coming back to what it was 10 years ago before i discovered football.

I wonder why and when did i become a Dolphins fan, i enjoyed football way more when i had not a favorite team and just enjoyed watching different players and teams, but it's not that i can just quit now, it's the weird feeling of becoming a fan of any sports team, you can't change ever without feeling cheating on yourself.

Ok, enough thinking out loud for the FOFC psychological therapy group, i feel better now whatever i decide to do tonight :)

Both GM & Ford are working on expanding hands-free functionality with apps.

GM says it is developing a voice communications app for Android mobile phones that will let drivers send and receive text messages and Facebook updates using only their voices. The app uses a Bluetooth connection between drivers' phones and their vehicles.

GM's voice-activated Android system converts incoming SMS text messages and Facebook updates from text to synthetic speech with the app. The messages are then sent via Bluetooth to the car's speakers. Drivers can respond by voice through the in-vehicle microphone by selecting among a list of defined messages, such as "Yes," "No," and "Driving." It is also possible for the system to memorize custom messages, which are transcribed into text or posted as audio clips on Facebook, GM said. For Facebook updates, the driver can say "Like" to like a friend's update.

I think this was mentioned up the thread but I don't recall seeing a final word on it.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- For those interested in such things, we’ve had two significant hiccups here at Cowboys Stadium as kickoff approaches for Super Bowl XLV.

First, the NFL closed four of the 10 entrance points into the stadium because of lingering ice on the roof of the stadium. Friday, six people were injured by ice falling onto the sidewalk outside of the structure.

Second, the NFL just confirmed in a statement that some sections of the temporary seats erected inside Cowboys Stadium "have not been fully completed." The league said that most fans will be accommodated somewhere in the building by kickoff, but indicated that some will not. Those fans will receive a refund triple the cost of face value of the seat.

Local organizers are trying to break the Super Bowl record for attendance by exceeding 105,000. Maybe they were a bit too greedy. Can you imagine arriving at the stadium and finding out that your seat doesn’t exist?

I kindof liked that Chrysler ad.

(Tho it did have some vague undertones of "Buy from Detroit or we'll come to your house and kick your ass")

Packers defense does something great (turnover), and then really lays an egg (big play on 2nd and 20 + CB whiffs on the jam at the line).

The Packers offense must have a love-hate relationship with their defense right now.

On one hand, I really hate the Steelers, but the Packers are a tough team to get excited about. Aaron Rodgers doesn't even look like he wants to be there. After the Steelers just scored, someone basically had to go console him, even though he's up by 3.

And as I'm typing this, they still refuse to run the ball. I feel like I'm watching the Eagles.

Packers have to think touchdown. A FG will only clinch their fate with a Pittsburgh comeback!

Key thing here... can they make the kickoff last more than 7 seconds so they essentially blow the 2 minute warning?

Nah, it's not that at all. I agree that my team isn't good enough, it's just that I live in an area that for some reason is Eagles/Steelers dividing line in PA. Lot's of less than gracious Steeler fans at work that I won't have to deal with tomorrow.
