FOFC Ice Hockey League

I had an idea for a league whilst mucking around with a game I found over at tabletop-sports.com. The game we will hopefully be playing will be based on FASTSCORE Hockey, which uses team rating's in Offense and Defense. My idea is to combine those and turn it into more of a multiplayer card game.

The Basics
Fastscore Hockey is played using two pages of charts and two differently colored 6-sided dice. Each team has two ratings- an offensive and defensive rating. These ratings are used to determine the number of goals the team scores per period. Higher OFF ratings represent better offenses, while lower DEF ratings represent better defenses.

1) Determine each team’s scoring rating.
a) To calculate the scoring rating take the team’s OFF rating and add it to their opponent’s DEF rating.
2) Determine the number of points scored in each quarter.
a) The visiting team rolls first- roll both dice and read them sequentially- for
example, if using a red and white die, and the roll is “3” on the red and “5” on the white die, read the result as “35”
b) Refer to the team rating on the Scoring Chart.
c) Look up the dice roll in the row corresponding to the team rating (found in the left most column). The number at the top of the column is the number of goals scored in the period.
3) Repeat step 2 for the home team.
4) Repeat steps 2 and three for the 2nd and 3rd periods.
5) Overtime: If the score is tied after the 3rd period:
a) To calculate overtime team ratings, subtract 5 from the regulation time team
rating calculated above.
b) Roll two dice for the team with the higher rating (if the two teams have the same
rating, roll for the home team first) and read them sequentially. Compare the dice
roll to the Scoring chart. If the result is at least one goal- the team wins!
c) If the result is not a goal, roll for the team with the lower team rating following
the rules written above.
d) If neither team scores, the result is a tie game. If a playoff

Let me give you an example of how the game is played:

The NY Islanders (with 6 OFF and 6 DEF) are home to Columbus (5 OFF and 10 DEF). So a quick calculation gives NY a rating of 16 and Columbus a rating of 11. We will be using the optional Home advantage which gives home teams a 3 point rating boost whilst the away team loses 3 points. So the new ratings are 19 and 8.

First period, NY rolls 58, and scores 2, Columbus rolls 56 and scores are locked at 2-2 after the 1st. In the 2nd period, NY scores 3, Columbus 0, and Columbus is the only team to score in the third meaning that New York wins 5-4.

The Rules
The rules may seem a bit lengthy but bare with me, the game is actually quite simple.

-Each member chooses a team name from current or past NHL teams (Penguins, Jets, Devils, Rangers etc.). There is no need for this other than for future seasons to be simmed realistically and give a full history. And to stop stupid team names.

-Each member then picks an Attacking Line (LW-C-RW) and a Defensive Line (G-D-D) from either Pool A or Pool B below. Each team MUST have 1 Attacking Line and 1 Defensive Line. For example if the member running the Islanders picks an Attacking Line in Pool A, he must then pick a Defensive Line in Pool B, and vice versa. This is to stop teams tanking at the early stages of the sign-up.

-Nearly every OFF and DEF Line has a Line Option, this will help you during certain games, or for 3 game streaks. They can be as rewarding as being certain to score 4 goals in a period in the next game, or could be a streak of x number games that reduces the Opposition's team rating; plus many more. Some Line Option's will only be available in the Play-offs or Regular Season. You can decide in what game to play them. Yet once you have used them all up that's it, you don't get them back, so choose wisely! This is put in place to give the teams with lesser lines to still be able to compete, and keep interest up.

-Once we complete that, the season will commence with a round/week of games simmed every 3 or 4 days. Line Options can be requested before each gameday and will come into effect in the next game.

-The season will be a rather short affair to keep things interesting, and will fairly similar to the NFL season, probably around 20-26 games long.

-The Play-offs will be a best of 3 for each round.

-Once the Play-offs are complete, bask in either glory or disappointment, and ridicule each other.

-Trash talking is acceptable, nay, demanded!

-The following season, some Lines retire and fresh ones come in, teams who lose Lines through retirement will go through a quick Draft process with the worst team picking first and so on.

-Should you not want to continue playing next season then don't sign-up and that's that! You can request to stay at the same team however if you fancy building a bit of a dynasty.

Line Options
The Line Options are invaluable to your team. They can be the difference between winning and losing. You can decide in which game to use them, and if you have 2, can use both in one game; but once they have been used that's it, you don't get them back. Options can only be used in the Regular Season unless otherwise stated.

(Hot Streak) - 3 consecutive games where your team's rating is increased by 3.
(Intimidate) - 1 game where your team's rating is increased by 3
(4 Goal Period) - 1 Period of play where your team will score 4 goals, regardless of Dice roll
(Opp. Bad Game) - 3 consecutive games where your opponents team rating is decreased by 3.
(Motivation) - 1 game where your opponents team rating is decreased by 3
(Re-roll for 3 games) - Re-roll until at least 1 goal is scored any period where 0 is rolled for 3 consecutive games.
(Period Goals) - Your team will score in every period of the next game. Any 0 scores will be re-rolled until a score is obtained.

Make your Picks
Below are the Pools, where you are to pick your Attacking and Defensive Lines. If you pick an Attacking Line in Pool A then you must pick a Defensive Line in Pool B and vice versa. You can only have 1 of each! And remember, the higher the OFF rating, the better, the LOWER the DEF rating, the better.

A couple questions:

- Can 2 people choose the same lines? Or is it first come first served?
- How are the games simmed? Do we need to be around for it to roll dice, or will you simply do this and post the scores?

Interested but will wait for the above answers before submitting.

It's first come, first served for the lines, So once they are all gone then that's it.

You don't need to be around for the dice rolls, I will do this all 'behind the scenes' and simply give you a quick run down of how the games played out.

We got 2 teams, If things stagnate a bit, then we'll kick this thing off with 8 or 10 teams.
