So... a couple of years ago I went through a heavy stint of playing this web based risk game called Grand Strategy - http://www.denizengames.com/grandstrategy/ ..
For whatever reason, I've picked it up again.
It's freeish - meaning you can play umm.. not sure.. it's like 2 or 4 games at a time with a free account. But with a premium account you can play 35 games at a time, get some extra maps open to you, can create private games, and can pause games.
So - I've jumped back in full force into the game. I think it's pretty well done. It has about 30 maps, some better than others, and a lot of rule options.
I've created a basic game with the Classic Map (essentially old-school risk) that is private. If you want to join:
