I have to say that what I've seen regarding The Witcher 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/20920/) looks pretty damn cool to me. I am, however, having a hard time understanding why someone would preorder 5 months in advance. Looks like the current deal would save 10%, but the digital premium bonuses seem to be regarding the version, and not that it is necessarily a preorder. Have any of you already placed an order and mind sharing why?

So the season of buying too many PC games begins, for me at least.

Semper Fi, the expansion pack for Hearts of Iron III, has been discounted to $8 (formerly $20) on Gamersgate. I'm going to give it a shot, I never really got into HOI3 due to performance issues and bugs but the opinion on the Paradox forums seems to be that Semper Fi makes it a good game and I have a new PC now.

I have never heard of nor played this. Any info you can share that would persuade me to give it a look? (hint: I don't usually need a lot of persuading if the game is decent, especially RTS games)

It's a grand strategy game (so you control forces on a national level, you aren't commanding squads or anything like that) where you take control of any nation on Earth during the 1936-1948 time period. You control the country's military, diplomacy, research, production, etc. There are a number of start points to choose from: 1936, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1943, and 1944.

As for the game's quality I can't say too much. I thought it looked incredibly promising when I played the demo last year and bought it shortly after the release. But it was buggy and ran very slowly on my old laptop. In the last few months I built a new PC but never went back to the game for a few reasons:

The expansion was already out but I didn't want to spend $20 to enhance a $40 game I hadn't gotten much enjoyment out of and I knew it'd go on sale eventually.

Even after several patches the regular game was apparently still quite flawed without the expansion.

I had a bunch of other games to play anyway.

So sometime over the next few weeks I'll see what I've been missing. I always buy these Paradox Interactive games immediately, think they are great, then realize that while there are some great ideas some key aspects are just broken, and then come back to them a year or so later after tons of patches and an expansion pack or two. I did it for Europa Universalis III, this game, and Victoria II. I'd to think I'll have learned my lesson and will wait for a bit after Crusader Kings II comes out but we'll see.

Thanks for the info. Two things:

What were your specs on the laptop and the specs on the new computer?
I like Paradox games, but they are indeed buggy for quite a while after release. Warband is a good example of this. Great game with a lot of issues.

Deathspank is at 33% off, but I just feel like it's going to be cheaper soon enough that I'm tempted to wait. It screams $9.99 full price type of game. Shank is a other game I'm looking at as well, but it's not on sale on Steam.

Someday i will manage to get into EU3

Bought the "complete" pack a while pack on CD for like 20$ but still haven´t done more than play around a bit with it and haven´t even re-installed it after changing to windows 7 ...

Is Heir To the Throne really adding to the gameplay experience ? Might just get it, just in case the urge to really start it hits me. I´ve been reading tons of historic novels lately as well ... Have 2 1/2 weeks off over christmas this year, so there´s a window of oportunity ;)

I don't know if this is the thread to ask (since I didn't read any of it) but I am looking for some PC game recommendations. I have a new machine that can handle anything but now want to play some games to take advantage of it.

Unfortunately, my criteria for an action-adventure/rpg is somewhat narrow: no sci-fi or future stuff. I really want to play a Gothic-like game but don't think getting ArcaniaA will be worth it. Did Risen last year. What else is out there?

Also, I am looking for a good FPS set in a historical period (i.e., before modern warfare). That rules out the new CoD, unfortunately. Any good, new WW2 shooters?

As far as first person shooters go I'd recommend Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Great game.

For RPG types I'm not sure. Dragon Age is excellent. Witcher is a little older, but a sequel is also coming out so if you're interested then getting the story from the first would be a good idea. I don't know how much you know about either, but they both have an old school RPG feel to them (baldur's gate 2, Planescape: Torment). Dragon age is top down or 3rd person gameplay. Witcher is strictly 3rd person and gets a bit button mashy, but the story is outstanding.

Amnesia: the Dark Decent is a really good game as well. It's a first person action/adventure/puzzle type game. One of the very few truly scary games.

Two Worlds 2 is coming out in the US in January. Might want to keep an eye on that. Here's IGN's info on it:

Also, I am looking for a good FPS set in a historical period (i.e., before modern warfare). That rules out the new CoD, unfortunately. Any good, new WW2 shooters?

A lot of good suggestions above, I will add my own.

Deus Ex is a good game with both FPS and RPG elements. Quake 4 was a lot of fun, and Far Cry was a good time as well, in case you haven't tried any of those.

I recommend you watch out for DRM on some of the games you buy though. Some of it can be very nasty.

I enjoyed Oblivion, but wouldn't have put it in my top ten. Too many little things that bothered me.

I'd replay it cheerfully, though, which is more than I could've ever said for Morrowind.

A few Steam deals (one mentioned above)

Counter Strike: Source $5.00
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition $2.49
The Deus Ex Collection $4.99
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse $10.50
Borderlands $9.99
R.U.S.E. $33.49

Added the Deus Ex Collection from this. That puts my Steam list at the following:
KOTOR for $5
X-Com collection for $5
Freedom Force collection for $2
Deux Ex Collection for $5
Orange Box for $10

That is just hard to beat. When they have sales, they are just so hard to pass up :)

Interface is fine, not great. I remember it feeling like it was made for console and not properly optimized for PC. I think there's a demo on Steam that you can check out to see how you like it though. If you're looking for deck customization, it's not for you. There are preset decks that you can use and if I remember correctly you can unlock more cards you can add to the deck but you are unable to remove cards in the base deck. It can be fun if you like MTG, and i really liked the challenges where you have to figure out how to win on your current turn (even though some of them seem bugged :( ), but if you're looking for something like the MTG game from 1997 you'll probably be disappointed.

I played the 360 version briefly. It seemed decent, but never really got into it beyond the deck I was given. I really never understood why more CCG games didn't take off more with online versions. I think L5RO(Legend of the 5 Rings Online) would be awesome if done properly. I also think a more American version of Phantom Dust is just sitting there waiting to be done for somebody. I think it's the best card game based fighting game I've seen. Having teams and guilds just seems like it has such potential.

rather minor thing, 5 indie games in a bundle on a "pay what you want" basis : The Humble Indie Bundle #2 (pay what you want for five awesome indie games) (http://www.humblebundle.com/)

you can also choose where the money goes that you pay for the games (developers or charity) and can also test first and then pay some money.

Includes the highly acclaimed platform/puzzle game Braid (90/100 on metacritic, 8.9 user score) which is just pure awesome imo and a must for anyone that has a thing for theese sort of games.

Others that got great reviews :

Machinarium (85 score, 9.4 user rating)
Osmos (80 score, 8.6 user rating)

no reviews :
Cortex command
Revenge of the titans (which aparently has nothing to do with either of the films ;) )

First of all we would like to apologize everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by us closing down GOG.com without any warning and without giving access to your games. We apologize for that from the bottom of our hearts!

Now it’s time we put an end to all the speculations once and for all. It’s true that we decided that we couldn’t keep GOG.com the way it was… so we won’t. As you probably know by now, GOG.com is entering its new era with an end of the two-years beta stage and we’re launching a brand new GOG.com with new, huge releases.

The new GOG.com will launch at 8.00 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. CET). Later today we’ll provide you here with 4 videos where you’ll find all needed information about the current events, as well as news on the new GOG.com, the upcoming big releases and the summary of the last two years.

Boy can I ever relate to that. I always have such big plans when new games come out and never come anywhere close to accomplishing those plans. And I am just dusting off some of the games I bought last Christmas. When I already have City of Heroes and Titian's Quest as my current forms of crack it's tough to move on and add other stuff. Far too tempted to just binge on GoG's deals to finish off any classic game I have wanted, but never got just so I could have them to play at some point. Unfortunately, that's a lot of games to go out and get and I'm sure I could go past the $50 mark and I would rather not.

My current goal is finish off normal difficulty setting on my clean redo of Titian's Quest(no importing, or using multiple guys to horde loot, straight shot through all diff settings). Knock out Braid and Plants Vs. Zombies since they are quick games and I'm close on the storyline part for PvZ. Maybe Portal and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition since they fall in the quick to complete category and then go the next diff on TI. Bioshock, KotOR, ME1 and ME2 need to be done in there somewhere as well. *sigh* Even doing the basics of the classics, I can't keep up.

Need favor from an USA steam account user with a paypal account.

I want to buy BFBC2 and the Vietnam expansion, but i see in the Euro store, BBFC2 is over $50 while it costs $20 in the USA store, there is also some difference in the Vietnam expansion price and i feel so stupid to pay like 3 times more for the same DIGITAL DOWNLOAD game just because i live in another country.

So i wanted to ask to any of you with an USA Steam account to buy it for me as gift and i pay you through paypal. Some of you have done it for me in the past for other games as i did for FM for others, (Sirfozzie mainly, thanks mate) but i can't catch him online today.

How do all of you guys have time for anything else in life, including posting in this forum? I was just playing WoW for a couple of years and never had time for anything else.

Recently I hadn't logged into Titian's Quest in a month. I can't recall the last time I logged into City of Heroes. I know it was before the latest issue was live, so it has to be maybe two months. I think I just try to target certain amounts of time to play, or just doing certain tasks in a game and then logging out. I do this with books and web development as well. It doesn't seem like a lot, but over a couple of weeks and you suddenly see progress.

Now, back when I started playing CoH for maybe the first 2 to 3 years, yeah, I played that game A LOT. I can't imagine playing the game like I did back then. If I play a game for 2-3 hours I start to get restless even on days off. I wouldn't doubt I put more time into CoH then I did work when I started out.

I'll post the obvious, no family, or girlfriend to deal with either. Not that I haven't spent time trying to fix that, or don't have people trying to hook me up.

Now I'm off to go read, clean, church, and hang out with friends with food in there somewhere.

played quite a bit with it back during Summer time. Paid $4.99 for it at Gamersgate and felt like I got my money's worth. For $0.49, it's quite a steal. It's not super deep, but for a turn based kind of game, I thought it was fun...

Well, day one of the Holiday Steam Sale has been a success.

1. I bought the "Fallout 3" game of the year edition for $20. I already own Fallout 3, but I wanted to get the expansions. So, I essentialy bought all 5 for $20, which is a fair price.

2. I bought the "Jagged Alliance 2" and "Disciplies 2" "gold pack" for $8.99.

3. I got the total Civ IV package, with all the expansions, for $6.50 or so. I own Civ IV on CD and had it installed, but I recently had to nuke and pave my laptop, so I spent $6.50 to avoid having to install all the CDs and update it with all the various patches.

4. Shatered Union for $0.49.

For those that fire up shattered union, seems to be issues with Vista/Win7. I found this on the Steam forums which fixed it for me

Type "msconfig" into the "Search programs and files" bar in your start menu and hit enter.

Select the boot tab, make sure Windows 7 is highlighted and hit the "Advanced Options" button.

Put a check in the "Maximum Memory" box and type 2048 below.

Exit msconfig and it will prompt you to restart, once you do you should be able to start Shattered Union.

To undo, remove the check in Max Memory box.

My son and I are set up about the same way. It started with me logging into my account on his PC for World of Goo, then he wanted to buy COD:MW2 with his allowance money but his PC wouldn't run it. We created an account for him and I bought the game for him with my account, then gifted it to him so he could install it on my PC. We're logging in and out of Steam on my PC now, works well. His Steam account tracks his playing time and achievements with his game.

I can see most of my games in his games library when he's logged into Steam on my PC though. Not sure if he can play them as if nothing, or if I can play COD from my account though. Might have to try it...

Hope that helps.

If you create another account, then you can't "share" games. I have loaded Steam on my laptop as well as my PC. I can download a game onto laptop, then set it up to play in Offline mode. This would allow me to play on the PC while my son plays on the laptop. But if you wanted to play a game online together, then you would need two accounts. Not saying this way is better, it works for us.

Has anyone played Knights of Honor (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-PDX02/knights-of-honor)? 5 bucks, has good reviews, seems like a worthwhile purchase, right?

For $5 there's very little that isn't a worthwhile purchase...when you figure you pay $10 to sit in a movie for two hours...if you get an hour of entertainment out of it it's worth it.

I'd looked at it before, for $5 I just might take a flier.

Damn some of the packs are so tempting, but i think if i buy them woul dbe mainly for nostalgia or to own some of the greatest games ever released, but that at the end won't play many of them as probably will look outdated (and because days have only 24 hours, and you sleep like 7 of those, plus there are kids, wives, jobs etc).

Betsheda pack: with all their amazing RPGs including latest fallout.

Quick question: How difficult is it to download these games and then later switch computers? Do you have to re-download them, does the serial key expire, or can you copy the .exe onto a flash drive or something?

You talking Steam?

Steam is easy...you just re-DL the program and login...then you have to re-DL the game files of course (but it manages that for you), and bam...you play.

For other services idk

There may be games offered by Steam that have their own DRM that limits the number of installs, but yeah, as DT said, you simply have to redownload the game and reinstall. It's even in their FAQ regarding what would happen if your hard drive ever crash and you had to reformat. IIRC, their answer was simply to redownload/reinstall Steam after you reformat, then redownload/reinstall the games you want.

As others have stated, you can install your games on multiple computers and set some of them to play offline and you then have multiple copies of the game. You simply cannot play them against one another...

dola, just saw the "copy the .exe to a flash drive" part. It's not as simple as that. What you download from Steam is the install file that gets extracted then installed to your PC. During installation, the registry gets modified so it would be hard to simply copy the .exe and such...

IIRC, when I bought from Gamersgate, the initial download is a tiny file that initiates the download manager and once it has installed the game, it asks you if you want to keep the installation file or delete them. It would only be a matter of finding that installation file and copying it to a flash drive. Just a guess...

You can back up the game files and burn them to DVD, so you don't need to redownload gigabytes of data. Go to the Steam menu, then select the backup option. Steam automatically splits the files to make sure they fit on a regular dvd.

did have an interesting issue with Fallout 3 last night.

I got the kids to bed and finished my other stuff and finally sat down to play it. I get to the first screen and I have to input my Windows Live ID. Okay, I think I've got one somewhere, but I can't remember my password. So I jump over to a browser to start that nonsense. I can't close the game while I'm doing it, because I can't get to a point where there's a menu, so I have to listen to the music blasting, but that's okay.

I change my password, jump over, log in...and get a message that my password is incorrect. after a few attempts, I close the game (with task manager) and restart it. still no go. I change my password again...still nothing. Nothing I do can get me past the initial request to enter a live ID.

so, after 30 minutes I download the patch to remove the windows live ridiculousness and move on with my life. but I would like my 30 minutes back.

anyway, a question: when do I "install" the extra content - I see the option to check them or not check them at startup, but I don't know when I should do it.

Summary of the past two days....

Yesterday:
Orange Box 14.99
Winterbottom $.49
Civ4: Complete $6.24

Today:
Sid Meier's Pirates $2.49
Deathspank $7.49
Shank $10.04

I caved on Deathspank and Shank, but Pirates was just too tempting at that price so i figured while I was there.... I need to try a demo of Mini Ninjas because I loved the trialers for the game, but couldn't run it on my old PC. If I like it and it gets cheap enough, that's the only random game I can think of to get. Dragon Age is still, "Yeah, eventually." Orange Box and Civ4 is years worth of gaming alone.

If you buy Heir to the Throne on Steam you need the Steam version of EU3 to play it. I believe that GamersGate and Direct2Drive will be usable with a retail copy. GamersGate currently has HttT from $9.99 (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-EU3HTTT/europa-universalis-3-heir-to-the-throne) and Direct2Drive matches Steam's price at $4.99 (http://www.direct2drive.com/8827/product/Buy-Europa-Universalis-3:-Heir-to-the-Throne-Download).

Deathspank $7.49

Playing this since it was suppose to be a mixture of hack 'n' slash with Monkey Island humor. It's more The Tick mixed with with some Torchlight maybe. The guy who does the voice for Deathspank is very much channeling The Tick in this. Sometimes the humor works, sometimes not so much. Some of my gear(and it's early) is Helmet of Pointyness, Chestpiece of Terrible Intent, Chicken Cannon, Heck from Heaven, Scaled Shoulders of Scales, Trinket of Improvement. Some of the descriptions for the items are humorous as well. Hatchet, "It's time to bury the hatchet, inside of your enemies." Chicken Cannon, "The Mighty chicken goddess blesses you with a vicious flock of followers." I did find out recently that learning to block is pretty much mandatory.

So I bought Sid Meier's Pirates! for $2.50. It doesn't make it past the splash screen before crashing. Checked the manual and it says the requiremets are "Win XP/2000" but doesn't say "or better." I wonder if it's just not compatible with Windows 7.

If so, is it possible to gift it to someone else? Can I ask for a refund? What do you guys think?

Can anyone give me an opinion about Monkey Island and which one I should buy if I decide to try it out? There is the "Complete Pack" that looks like it is 3D graphics maybe and then there is the "Secrets of Monkey Island 1&2" that look totally different and like a remake of the old 2D game that I have never played.

I really like the old King's Quest games when I was a kid and would like to try out some sort of new adventure game since I haven't done one in years... Monkey Island seems like a reasonable place to start but what do you guys think.

I can wholeheartedly recommend them both.

The 1&2 are, in fact, remakes of the old 2D games in the newer art style, but they also include the old 2D sprites as well, if that's how you prefer to play the games.

The Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack is the new episodic game that Telltale did, and it was one of my favorite games of 2010. Well worth the money, IMO.

Agreed

The re-released games are fantastic. The new art captures the feel of the original games perfectly and it's fun to swap back to the old 2d graphics every now and then to get a reminder of how things looked.

The new game is faithful to the original games and a big surprise for me. I was honestly expecting a terrible game and it ended up being quite a bit of fun.

The only RPG every remotely close to Fallout. If it was bug free and slightly more balanced you could make the argument it surpassed them.
