Please, just stop changing your names people. SkyDog was odd, but I guess I understand. It was a time of change for us and his name was the topper.

Shorty and Dodgerchick though, things are going to far now. Heck, I still can't look at Poli and remember who that is. The names must not change anymore, I don't take change well and my head will explode people.

I think it's a natural outgrowth of a bit of a shift in how people interact via teh internet tubes. Particularly with the taking off of Facebook, where real first and last names and pictures are used, many people's internet usage is becoming less anonymous. In all four cases you mentioned, people moved from their "online" names to their "real-life" nickname or actual first name.

Changing the subject a little. I read an article at time.com talking about 3 companies that have and are changing teh internet and its paradigm: Apple, Google and Facebook. When did Facebook take off and what happened to MySpace? It seems that social networking has become synomonous with MySpace but they talk like Facebook is it.

For me personally, as my "online" world and "real" world intersect more and more, I was finding it increasingly silly to use a screen name that I haven't been called in roughly 20 years, and then by only a small number of people. Nearly all of my friends call me some variation of Ben E Lou (mostly the whole thing).

It seems that social networking has become synomonous with MySpace but they talk like Facebook is it.I'm not sure exactly why and how, but for whatever reason, I'd agree that Facebook has sped past MySpace in being able to grab an audience beyond those under 30. Because of my work with youth, I was an early adapter for my age group on Facebook. (I was one of the first on YL Staff to embrace it, even. Now YL has an official Facebook strategy. :p ) However, in the last six months to a year, it has been amazing to see how many people I know joining it who are 30somethings, 40somethings, and even grandparents. I used to communicate with current/former YL kids through it. Now it's becoming nearly the #1 way I stay in touch with out-of-state friends who are around my age, and even older ones. I've probably accepted a dozen friend requests in the last month from people 50 and up.

That is interesting, Ben. I believe us baby boomers still have a sense of fear regarding privacy and identify theft, not to mention prefering alternate of ways of communicating (i.e., emails). Has FaceBook done more in security to bring in the over-30 crowd (if that's not a totally stupid question to ask)?

I'm not Ben, but...from my experience, it's changed a lot from the early college-only days. You can pretty much people from seeing almost anything you don't want them to see or limiting things within their profile or making it so only certain people can see things. It takes some work and it's not entirely seamless, but..it's improved a lot to protect people's privacy and ensuring stuff isn't out there willy nilly for just anyone to be able to see.

By default, unless a person has accepted a friend request from you, all you can see about them is a name, picture, and any mutual friends that you might have:

I would reason that Facejam blazed past myspace in the fact that in general pages are cleaner, easier to use and look nice, as compared to myspace.

Oh and the whole fact that they started first as college-only and every college student in the world joined immediately, and then expansion helped the process too.

To me, I check Facebook religiously as opposed to myspace where every once in a blue moon I'll see what's happening.

Isn't she GoldenEagle's girlfriend/fiancee/wife?

I have to admit, it's very interesting to see people talk about the merging of their real lives and their online/internet lives. For me, that's just about the last thing I want. Maybe it's just that I've seen a lot of people working for companies that do defense work getting in trouble for blogging from work (even if it's not about work) or other "online" things, but I'd like to keep my 2 lives separate.

Sure, there are those at work who know my online nickname, and those online that know my full name and probably where I work, but so far, I keep them pretty separate. I don't post entries to my blog from work, I don't come here very often from work, and frankly I'm not interesting enough to use Twitter and I never got into Facebook (again, the biggest draw for me would be using it while at work, which I wouldn't do).

So, I guess I'll stay terpkristin. :)

There's only two places that I have used my real name as a handle: ebay and my old Apolyton account from 1999. By nature, I am a very private person and there are times and places to share but those are the exceptions, not the norm. And since I got in trouble for being on FOFC too much at work years ago, I have basically kept my time there solely on work (and it had helped to get promotions, bonuses and rewards).

One of them is making my real name readily available online. Nothing good has ever come from it for sure, and a few bad things have happened as a result. I fall in the camp that doesn't really like to have my online world and real world intersect. Sure, it's kind of neat that MikeVic and I have some stuff in common and have kind of figured out who we each are in real life, but for the most part I enjoy the anonymity (although I realize people could surely connect all the dots if they wanted to go to the effort).

It allows for a certain level of goofiness, harsh language, and inane banter that I wouldn't want colleagues or whatnot to read. And it allows for a certain level of sharing of thoughts and feelings that I wouldn't want friends and family to read. I enjoy being able to bounce things around in here that I don't really feel comfortable doing with people I actually know. Kind of weird, but freeing in a way.

I wouldn't want to lose that, which is one reason that I've never told any of my friends about this forum even though I think it is totally awesome. It is also why I worry a little that my brother might find the board now that we've moved to OS. I made the joke about 'worlds collide' but there is truth to it.

That would be nice.

I've often considered going against the trend expressed in this thread. I registered years ago without thinking I'd ever post to any great degree, so I just used my standard internet/email username, which is derived from my real name. Though I've never been "outed", I certainly hold back and assume anyone I know could read what I'm writing, primarily because of my employment.

I'd rather just be 100% anonymous.

I find it interesting that the trend is going back to real names. Most of my early Internet usage was on newsgroups where people using pseudonyms were mocked relentlessly (at least on the groups I was on). For me, my nod toward anonymity was to just use the first letter of my last name. I guess I've always had the belief that having to put your name toward your words kept people somewhat amiable.

To followup on bucc and tk's comments, I really only have a couple 'regrets' about anything I've said/posted/done as far as the internet goes. One of them is making my real name readily available online. Nothing good has ever come from it for sure, and a few bad things have happened as a result. As paranoid as I am these days about even people I know having information about me, much less anonymous people, i really, really wish I could go back and change that completely.

I'm not the political office seeking type, but I've often thought that anyone who wants to run for political office in 30 years damn well better be anonymous (and with good IP hiding) on any message board they've made more than a handful of comments on. It's the equivalent of having a ton of little Reverend Wright tapes sitting around. There would be tons of little quotes made either in the heat of the moment or in response to something else or even just taken out of context that could sink a campaign.

Then again, maybe politics will be different in 30 years so that something like that wouldn't have as much of an impact- we'll just be happy that the candidate isn't having sex with that underage boy at the moment he's taking the oath of office like his opponent would have been.

I've used my RL nickname online since 1989 (almost 20 years now) and never had any problems.. I guess considering there are over 500 people with the same exact full name in the U.S., and about 500,000+ people with similar names, its never been a big deal to me. :)

My nickname is like bellbottom jeans.. I was in fashion two decades before it was fashionable to use RL nicknames!

I salute you, Dan Garion!

I'm in the group of people that if I had it to do over again I would choose a new name. Mine's a little stupid and is something I've really only used here and at FOFC-esque sites like the RWBL and whatnot.

You post enough on a message board and you're going to lose a bit of your annonymity. There are people here I know I could find in RL pretty easily just based on what they've posted here. And if Stevew can find me at work, I assume everyone can. Just hoping my boss never walks in and says, "Let's talk about kcchief19."

But then again, I've never posted online about how I look hookers and stealing from the company, so I should be OK.
