A couple of minutes later, he put his head on my knee, and then after I petted him he looked out the windshield and put his paw on my knee.

I guess he liked the hug.

I just said good morning to mine and huged her like everyday and she moved his tail of happiness.

Done. He's also gotten a treat, got to scare the living crap out of the squirrels in the back yard, and will later be going to physical therapy (for his back), which he looooooooves. Then there's the roughly 10-14 hours of sleeping on Daddy while Daddy watches the football this weekend. All in all, a good weekend for the doggie.

Funny...I read this last night & this morning (without consciously thinking about this thread) felt inclined to hug my dog. He's getting up there in age and I usually just take him for granted...but I felt better after doing it.

So thanks for the suggestion, and I hope all is well with your's.

Thanks for the thoughts. My dog of age 16 died last night. I didn't post anything in the main post because I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me, instead just wanted them to do something that actually makes a difference.

He was very, very old but not particularly sick. He'd gone through a couple of bad periods before of a week or two weeks (but none recently), but recently had been fine. But yesterday morning he couldn't really move his back legs and by the time my parents were home from work he couldn't move them at all. When I came home a couple hours later my dad had just put him in his bed. We stayed by him and he just drifted off into the night a few minutes later. I'm glad that he didn't die alone and that he didn't have to go through a bunch of bullshit at the vet. He was ready to go and he went.

16 years is a wonderfull amount of time to have a dog.

Very sorry for you loss RPI, it is amazing how much Dogs (pets in general) really become such a huge part of the family.

This face is the first one that greets me everyday when I get home and I can't imagine how empty I would feel not seeing it. He got two hugs this morning.

I've been lucky that I've never had to see one of my pets die...but unlucky that I never got to keep any of them for more than a few years since my parents would give them away before we moved.

However, I have two cats now and one of them is getting a little bit up there, he's almost ten years old. So he probably only has a few years left, and it's going to be incredibly sad when his time comes. I love the little furball...

RPI, so sorry to hear about your dog. It sounds like he was truly loved and appreciated by you and your parents, which is all a dog will ever ask for.

I had to put my cat down about 10 - 11 years ago, I held the entire time, and to this day, it's one of the hardest things I've ever gone through. I miss her everyday.

I've hugged both our pets this morning, and the puppy is currently curled up next to me after having a nice romp outside where he played with the guy power washing the apt and got soaking wet. He looks happy :)

Hoss was the greatest dog I will ever had. First dog a got when I was out of my Mom's home. He died a couple of years ago now and I still think about him. Glad you got to be there with your dog in the end.

Sorry to hear that - I went through the same thing in July.

As hard as it is, there's a couple of things to remember. Your dog was pretty lucky to be able to be a part of your family for that long. With dogs, life is such a lottery - who do they end up with? Your's got lucky.

And I know you never took your dog for granted. When a human family member dies, there's often regrets - I could have done this, I should have said that. With a dog of course, the relationship is so much simpler. I'm guessing you did absolutely nothing wrong over the 16 years - there's no regrets, etc.

Sorry to hear that, RPI. It's never easy. I went through the same thing about 13 years ago when my first dog had to be put to sleep. I was 20 at the time and that dog had been my best friend since I was 5.

My wife and I just got our first dog about a year and a half ago. He's almost 2 now and he's great. I dread the inevitible, but, like molson said above, I know that when it comes he'll have had a great life, especially considering we adopted him from the Detroit Animal Control.

Sorry to hear that. We had to do that a couple months ago with our dog, she was 13 and was my best friend. I am tearing up just thinking about it.

Always remember the good times. I'm sure that dog was very lucky to be part of your family!

Sorry about your loss, RPI, I know how the grief can settle in after a pet you really love dies.

I had a Basset Hound named Puddles who was 10 when she "discovered" a secret passageway between my fence and house and went out exploring... in the busy road in front of my house. Horrible. I remember standing in the waiting room of the vet's office as they were working on Puddles, sobbing like a baby. Thirty-two years old, crying like a little baby. Anyway, it's been five years, and the pain and grief have long since faded, but I still look at the picture of Puddles on my desk and smile at the memories.

Done. We lost our dog Jack pretty suddenly earlier this year, so I've been there. Luckily, we were able to adopt a new little guy a month or so later. They don't necessarily replace the old dog but they add their own bit of joy.

Good catch, Jeebs! I actually had to think about this for a minute, but that's actually her mother's engagement ring. It's a saphire surrounded by a bunch of small diamonds. The way the flash hit it made it look like one big rock. The real "rock" and band are on the appropriate finger on the left hand. :)
