Antmeister and I were having this discussion in the car. Our 7 year old and I have been saying antee, but Ant says it's awntee.

So which is it?

Pronouncing it "awnt" as opposed to "ant" is too self-consciously highbrow for me and my family - we've always pronounced it "ant".

I say ant. In north Louisiana, most whites say ant, most blacks say ahnt (or ahntee). Both proununciations are considered acceptable by most dictionaries. As an English teacher, I never make a comment about the pronunciation of the word in class unless someone asks. Then I say either pronunciation is acceptable.

Maybe awnt is a New England thing? I don't know, just always what I've used. Or I guess it could be an Italian thing.

Most of my relatives say ahnt and most of them are from Alabama, so I can go with that. When someone says ant, I think they are calling me.

I said "ant" when I grew up in Delaware for 12 years. When I moved to Connecticut, I started saying "aunt" like the locals do and I've been saying it that way ever since.

I find it is split along racial lines here.
Like stated above I generally here white folks say ant and blacks say awnt.
I say awnt though, and draw bad looks from family members

BTW what about si-rup vs sur-up...thats one that bugs the hell outta me...

Don't "monkey" and "donkey" sound alike other than the first letter?

Yes, it has that in print. BUT, if you click on the listen icon to hear it be said, it only says ant.

When reading the dictionary page I did just realize that if I say great-aunt, I say it awnt then.

Odd. But I don't know any of those so it won't happen again.

In Southern England it's pronounced the same as "aren't". In North of England it's more like "Ant"
