I have a Pavillion ZV5000. I just purchased a 40" Samsung LCD HD TV (the black one...NOT the signature series). I used to always connect my laptop to my old TV through S-Video. My TV has two S-Videos, among a dozen other connections, but it seems it does not like me using this setup.
What should I be using? The manual says to use a D-sub cable but I've never heard of that. Is that the standard monitor plug (blue)? Because that's what it seems like I will need.

Yep. A D-Sub is gonna be your standard VGA cable. Just need to make sure you have the right combination of male/female ends to connect it up.

Would this be what I am looking for?

It all depends on the connection on your laptop and the connection on the TV. That will determine which cable you need.

Both ends, my laptop and TV, are female.
