I have the opportunity to pick up one of these, long with the 18-55mm lens and a 1GB card for free (actually, I can cash in part of my hoard of frequent flier miles).

Does anyone have any feedback on this particular camera? I've been wanting to get a DSLR camera, but haven't seriously started looking. Any info would be appreciated.

No personal info on the D50, but I have the D70 and love it. The D70, D70s, and D50 are all very similar (same sensor, megapixels, etc). I don't know why they switched to SD cards (the D70 is CF). dpreview.com is a great place to get good info.

Do you have any SLR lenses (or can you get any from family, etc) from older film cameras? Canon and Nikon both make great DSLRs, so if you have lenses from one or the other, I'd recommend sticking with that brand. If you get the D50, pick up a zoom lens right away, such as a 55-200mm or 70-300mm. FYI, due to the sensor size, you have to multiply the focal length of a lens attached to the D50 by 1.5 to get the approximate value for a 35mm. So, the 18-55mm lens with the D50 set is equivalent to a 27-83mm on a 35mm camera ... in other words, it's about a 0.8x - 2.3x zoom lens. The 55-200mm lens would give you up to approximately an 8.4x zoom.
