I know we already have a general idea of where fellow FOFC members live but I stumbled across this interactive map that is based on Google Maps and thought that it would be kind of cool to get a better idea of where other FOFC members are and maybe spawn some meet and greets.

All you have to do is zoom down using the controls on the left to your area and then click on the map and a prompt will ask for your info and that’s it, no signing up for anything just put a little icon and your name where you are.

If I could delete my icon and move it slightly....:) I didn't realize I could zoom in.

I think I can actually see my car parked in my driveway in the closest zoom-in. Also, if you zoom all the way in and go just a little southwest of my house (one frame west, and two frames south), there is a *VERY* clear view of Tucker High School. The football field, baseball field, tennis courts, and parking lots are very easy to see.

Yeah, I was able to get it placed directly on my house - but at the time the satelite photo was taken, my house had just completed construction and the sod hadn't been laid yet. But I do actually have grass now.

LOL, I finish drilling down, select & place my icon, come back to the map ... and discover that me & EasyMac both chose the same icon.

I have a feeling we both might have been making a statement about our feelings for our particular location ;)

Scarecrow - thanks for setting this map up. This is really going to make my FOFC killing spree a lot more efficient. I think I'll start in the DC area first now.

it is indeed very clear and if you zoom to our house, you can see that the landscaping for the house to the left of ours had not been done when they took this imagery. You can see that there's no grass around their house but instead it's kind of beige, dirt like. They built that house around Spring last Summer and it's still like that (they actually just sold it, so I kind of never expected them to do the ladnscaping anyway...)

if you move north-northwest from our house, you can see a building with a round parkway, that's my son Andrew's primary school :)

Looking at my hometown, I noticed my dad's truck wasn't out in front of the house like it normally is. Scrolled over a little to the donut shop up the hill, and sure enough, blue pickup sitting in his usual parking spot.

Since our house is a new development the satellite image is way out of date. even the park down the street is still just open space.

Alas, Google doesn't have satellite of my area close enough to let me drill all the way down, but from what I can tell, I managed to get pretty darned close just from the map (having a football field for a neighbor helps in spotting yourself on a satellite image :) )

Dang. I just checked the zoom-level view for the house I grew up in. I grew up so far on the outskirts of Columbus that "We're sorry. We don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region. Try zooming out for a broader look."

At least where you live now have nice imageries unlike most of the NE and the West where the photography was taken in early Spring (i.e., no trees or greenery).

I find it amusing that in looking at the house I grew up in Syracuse, the edge of the high resolution imagery (to where it goes to a different zoom level) is about 3 houses down.

I also marked where my office is and my barracks where I stay when I'm away from home. The building where I work has two open courtyards, which are the squares inside the building. One is usually where we keep mops, barbeque stuff, etc. The other is the student smoking area. Both areas are surrounded by windows. The students have often remarked when they're smoking they feel like they're in a fish bowl.

The funny side note for google maps is the GIS information is better than the company information we have and we wind up using it to help locate developments. Not that we make any decisions off of it, it's just way easier to use and has more up to date sat imagery.

I'm having the exact same problem.

Well I just re-placed mine (thanks to whoever deleted my old one!).
Now it's showing me as in between mine and my neighbors' house (I'm the lower of the two), but it's still close enough and pretty cool. :)

I tried to zoom in on the satellite on my house in Kansas and after the third click a screen came up that said "Come on, do you really want to see a close up of Kansas? Just picture some flat plains and throw in a cow and a tornado here and there and you've got it!".

Oh well, we now have a trifecta of Kansas residents! Vexroid's close enough that we could probably give him citizenship.

Hey, we have hills all over Lawrence. God knows I had to walk up them every day to class. That said, yeah, you have to zoom out to 4 and my poor little apartment complex only shows 2 buildings when there's 10 or so there- either that or they all got mushed together and look like 2 buildings.
