Man, they have to put this guy on reserve and take him out of the equation. I believe the Eagles will.
You know, I used to be a big fan of TO. On the field he makes plays. Even the sharpie thing didn't bother me. This offseason really does. I have much respect for Reid and the Eagle team.

jeeezus. TO is ridiculous. So goddamn ridiculous.
i wish they would just toss him on reserve like rkmsuf suggested and force him to sit out the year. Unfortunately I don't think that makes much sense. In lieu of that, they ought to just cut his worthless ass. I don't think there's much of anyone stupid enough to pick him up at this point. I mean I'm sure there's someone, but I think he has burned almost all his bridges.

Maybe TO misinterpreted what Reid asked of him. What he really said was, "TO, why don't you just leave and get me a Philly cheesesteak."

I'm embarrassed that T.O. and I are from the same county in rural Alabama. What is it with NFL WRs from rural areas(T.O. and Moss)?

According to the local sports radoi, TO came onto the practice field during practice by himself, grabbed a ball boy, and ran routes by himself at full speed. Andy was apparently upset that he was being a distraction on the field and that he was going full speed when he was supposedly hurt and supposedly taking a day off to rest it.

If this is true, I still like T.O. I understand that Reid must have been angry that T.O. lied about being injured or something... but this is a guy that played amazingly in the Super Bowl after that injury he had. If he feels like going full-speed in practice without affecting anyone else, I'd be fine with that...

Why do I get the feeling that's not the entire story.
In one corner, we have Andy Reid, a guy who by most accounts is an up front coach who isn't going to talk out both sides of his mouth to get what he wants.
And on the other side, T.O. and his assorted history.
Now with everything that has gone on up until now, does it make a lot of sense that Reid would ask T.O. to leave because he's running at full speed with a ball boy throwing passes to him instead of resting? Distraction to the rest of the team aside, this wouldn't rank in the top 10 of bad moves T.O. has made, so I just have a really hard time believing that there isn't a whole lot more to Reid's request than T.O. putting in some unwise practice time.

It's one thing to go all-out against the advice of team doctors, but with the blessing of the team, for an end-of-the-season, championship-type game. It's another to ignore doctors and the team during training camp, thereby risking an injury that could cost you the entire season. KNowing this guy, it's not out of the question that he decided, "Hey, if I'm going to make a measely few million this year, I might as well do it on IR with a severe hamstring pull, cause more distractions next off-season, get traded, and do the deal I really want with another team." Fuck him.
MrBigglesworth
08-10-2005, 03:59 PM
I think it has to do with TO continuing to think of himself as being above the team.
Now they are saying that the autograph session that TO skipped the other day (which pissed off a lot of fans) was also a part of it.

The assumption was that TO wasn't really injured, but milking it because he was upset at his contract.

I think its more likely Reid was upset because he skipped an autograph session for the second time in a row.

actually, Clayton has this at ESPN.
Clearly, a verbal fight with his head coach is conduct detrimental. Supposedly, Owens was suspended for refusing to attend a mandatory autograph session, and for practicing away from the rest of the team. That was violation of his contract because it clearly states he has to do some mandatory signings.

I mean, it's not like you made a big fuss at your old company in order to come to this company for a significant raise after continually disrespecting and undercutting your supervisor and embarassed and insulted your co-worker or anything) where you proceed to call our your company and talk about wanting them to give you even more money. Then when you did come back and called in sick, you did so on account of a sore throat. And then you did whatever the hell it is you normally did, which appears to be singing quite loudly. On a stage. In the parking lot. In front of a lot of people.

Yes, obviously holding out for more money is just as bad as murderers, rapists, drug dealers, adulterers, steroid users, drug users... should I go on? I think we could name 10-15 players a team who are bigger assholes than TO.
As to the work-TO analogy. It'd be like giving a kickass presentation, having a vacation, wanting more money and threatening to not work, come to work, saying your sick, then the next day coming to work and working on something by yourself and missing a minor team meeting have having your boss get pissed at you for it.

I think that the Eagles knew what they signed with TO. He is an amazing player that causes a lot of off-field problems. If you take something, you take the good things and the bad things. If you know that somebody is problematic and that you can`t (or just donīt want) to have somebody like this, donīt sign it.
Eagles has a shot in the Superbowl. Now they have to pay the bill.
JimboJ
08-11-2005, 07:17 AM
I like the way the Eagles are handling this. After all, TO doesn't really need training camp. This is a way for them to get him away from the team for a while, so the rest of the guys can focus on football rather than the TO circus going on. It also gives the Eagles more leverage as TO continues to get bad press and build animosity with the fans.

I'm assuming the Ravens coaching staff and management have gotten little done so far this training camp, with all the uncontrollable laughter.

i'd still rather have TO on the field than Derrick Mason, and I rather have McNabb rather than Kyle Boeller, and i'd rather have RBs who don't get arrested for cocaine possession, so i'm not sure what they'd have to be so happy about.
the ball is in Philly's court. they've been to 3 straight NFC championship games without TO, all they need him for is to put them over the hump. but it's not like they weren't among the best teams in the NFC the last 4 or 5 years. contractually there isn't much TO can do, so he can cry and rant and rave, but at the end of the day he has a contract with legal consequences if he fails to uphold his end of it. this isn't a controversy many are making it out to be.
rkmsuf
08-11-2005, 10:56 AM
so they suspend him a week. that's actually doing TO a favor. he gets to stay home and play xbox while the team busts their ass at camp.
If they had any hope at WR other than Lewis and I can't even name a guy he should have gotten the total heave ho.
Lewis is what 4 ft 8...he can't do anything other than play slot.

It has become obvious between TO's actions, and some of his agent's inexplicably public comments, that their strategy was to have TO show up and cause as much trouble as possible in an attempt to force the Eagles hand. I am wondering if the Eagles have any legal recourse to recover 6/7 of his signing bonus from last season, since he is obviously NOT making a good faith effort to fulfull his contractual obligations.
Anthony
08-11-2005, 11:06 AM
the worst thing the Eagles could do right now would be to release TO, which is what he and his agent are praying for. Drew Rosenhaus can't negotiate a new contract (and get his commission off it) unless TO is released, because it's now very clear the Eagels aren't going to renogotiate.
rkmsuf
08-11-2005, 11:08 AM
he has a clause that talks about conduct detrimental to the team and the forfeiting of some of his bonus. 2 million maybe.

I think this prevents them from being a Super Bowl bound team, but I still think they will do well. They need to pick up another good receiver, but I think Greg Lewis is ready to have a very nice year. I also think Reggie Brown has potential, but probably isn't ready for a big role yet. However, he might make a nice #3 receiver this year.

Somebody out there is going to cut a veteran receiver, and that guy's going to hear his phone ring. How about Kevin Johnson, currently (I think) in Detroit? Great candidate there. It was mentioned in DC that either McCants or Dyson would likely not make the Redskins. No TO certainly, but yeah, there should be options out there.
I also think M&M (well, M & Stink... M&M don't seem to do the show together anymore, they're never there at the same time) were going a little overboard on the Eagles falling apart at the seams because of all this.

I think KJ is a great candidate for the Eagles, but I don't think he is a candidate to be cut at all. He is apparently a lock as the 4th WR in Detroit. A low draft pick might shake him loose though.
Antonio Bryant was pretty good in Cleveland last year. No way he is cut, either.

Contract can't be a problem - they traded for him last season, so any bonus would have been wiped clean. He sounds like a reasonable candidate, too.

Doubt it.
Antonio Bryant has stood out from the receiver pack in Cleveland during training camp.
It looks like his starter job is locked up. ''What's impressed me the most is his consistency,'' Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. The Browns passing attack figures to struggle, but we like Bryant to out-gain rookie Braylon Edwards.

Now depending on how you answer that question, will determine exactly what happens to you next season. We will certainly consider restructuring your contract, in 2007, not before. As to the work-TO analogy. It'd be like giving a kickass presentation, having a vacation, wanting more money and threatening to not work, come to work, saying your sick, then the next day coming to work and working on something by yourself and missing a minor team meeting have having your boss get pissed at you for it.1) Not "coming to work" but "coming to the place of employment, saying that you're sick and work on your own project". Seemingly minor detail that is fairly significant when you look at the correct analogy, in my opinion.
2) Not "missing a minor team meeting" but "missing a required meeting with clients". Again, another seemingly minor point until you actually use the proper analogy instead of one that glazes over the actual details. So on the grand scheme of teamdom, has he really committed a mortal sin?Mortal sin? Doubtful. Being a completely self-centered jackass who shows that he could care less about the team? Yes. You obviously have a different definition of how someone achieve the distinction of being an asshole but he fits in mine. In spite of not having killed, raped, dealt drugs, committed adultery, used illegal substances or slap around small children like Dean Houston.

That made my heart smile. I hope that is what they do, but it is not likely considering they couldn't win a challenge by the union against putting him on the IR.

Nor do I think they can win more than 7 games with their current crop of WR's minus T.O.

As a Falcon's fan, I'd love to see them try. :) But really, I think they might do better than most people think without him.

That's ridiculous - they had the best record in the NFC with marginal receivers in both 2002 and 2003. Don't tell me you think they will miss James Thrash and Todd Pinkston that much.
And people are way overrating the impact TO had on the Eagles. They won one more regular season game in 2004 vs 2003, but were the #1 seed both years. They advanced one more game in the playoffs in 2004 vs 2003, and TO did not even play in that game - his impact on them getting to the Super Bowl was 0.

Well, I have some evidence to back up my claim that TO's impact was overstated. You are merely guessing, besides being in a bad mood from paying taxes this week ;) .

The Eagles didn't have Westbrook at his current level pre-TO. Westbrook is a very good back who helps their offense immensely. Their defense is as strong as it has ever been with both Lito Sheppard and Brown developing surprisingly well. The front 7 is excellent. I think they would win more than 7 games without T.O.

I've been thinking the same thing here. People talk like Owens carried them to the Super Bowl. They were in the NFC Championship 3 years in a row before Owens without getting over the hump. Last year they finally won the Championship, but Owens didn't even play in that game.
That said, the Eagles would have been the team to beat in the NFC this year with a happy Owens. Instead it's now a wide open race to see who gets crushed by New England in the Super Bowl.

Doesn't Philly already have enough alligator armed receivers? Warrick has never been the deep threat he was made out to be, and has never been consistent enough to justify the Bengals high pick of him from years ago. He can't even return punts that well any more. He is maybe a #4 guy.
Warrick spent much of last year hurt, but the year before he'd found his niche.
He was one of the best third down/goal line WR in the game. The Bengals threw him in the slot on third downs and he'd find a way to get to the marker and make a play.
No, he's not and will never be the explosive guy people thought he'd be, but he could flourish in situational action and wouldn't be a bad pickup for the Eagles at all.

Warrick is nasty if you use him right - he is a great playmaker, he just doesn't have top speed. This makes him a good slot receiver/punt returner.

Does anyone have the numbers on how much it would cost to cut or trade Owens? My guess it would cost more to cut him this year (or next year) or trade him than it would to let him sit.

He was horrible at returning punts... he would catch balls inside the 5, or fumble them. Like I said, TroyF, he's a #4. The Bengals have Chad Johnson, TJ Houshman-whatever, and some no names, and are considering cutting Warrick outright. That should tell you something.

The Bengals have if not the best, then at least a top 3 Wide Recieving corps as a whole unit in the entire league.Releasing Warrick SHOULD tell the league that they should be very afraid of the CIncinnati Passing game.
The guy who muffed punts inside the 5 was TJ, NOT Warrick. Warrick has the ability to break short passes for touchdowns as well as returning punts for scores. See the Chiefs game a couple years back for an example of what Peter Warrick can offer the Eagles. If you're going to insult a player and degrade his abilities PLEASE at least have a clue as to what your on about.

So true. People get so caught up in what a great player T.O. is that they ignore that he had no impact on the Eagles' record. The bottom line is how many games you win, not how much talent your team has. There's not always a direct correlation.

As far as trading TO, who'd want him?
I mean...he's pulled the same crap on two teams, and didn't impact the Eagles that much when it came right down to it...who'd want to put up with the headache??

The Bengals have one of the deepest WR core in the league. CJ, TJ and Washington are all very good WR. he's only #4 because of the team he plays for.
You are saying a lot of things about Warrick that just aren't factual.
He's not the greatest return man the game has ever seen, but he's not horrible either. He finished 7th in the AFC in punt returns in 2003. As far as fumbling, you are looking at a different player. Warrick has fumbled one time in his NFL career.
In 2004, Warrick had 48 catches for first downs, with 25 of them coming on third or fourth down. Add in another 8 rushes for first downs and you had a guy who knew how to fight for the marker and keep drives alive.
I'm not saying he's going to go into the hall of fame, end up on pro bowls, or lead a team single handedly to the Super Bowl.
But he's not a bad addition at all. I'd certainly love to see the Broncos anemic WR core get him if the Bengals dump him. The Eagles could do far worst than Warrick. I think he's a VERY solid #3 WR in this league, and if he can stay healthy, he can fill in at the #2 on a temporary basis.

In fact, I'd say he did very well as a #2 in 2003.
The problem with Warrick right now is that you do not know what you get. He is apparently still not fully recovered from the injury that kept him out in 2004.

He's still under contract, so I'd have to assume so. He'd get fined, likely, but he's still drawing a check. NFLPA would likely intervene if the Eagles wanted to withold his entire check.
I believe Keyshawn was still getting money in spite of being "fired" (placed on inactive list) a few years back.

So here's the situation. I'm a wide receiver who just got cut out of a high money making contract. I used to be pretty good, people thought I could be great. I signed on as a #1 when maybe I should have been happy as the #2, but now I need to prove myself if I want to see a big cheque ever again.
Oh wait, the Eagles are in dire need of 1, likely 2 wideouts, and other than that, they're still the odds on favorites to come out of the NFC. So I could play for one year at a *discount* salary while trying to prove I'm worth big bucks again AND have chance at a Superbowl.
Dotted line.........sign..........done.
I'm a Seahawks fan but I'm seriously hoping that the Eagles can find a pair of WR's amongst the cuts that are willing to come in cheap and play to prove something while hoping for a ring and a huge payday next season. Please be cheap enough that the Eagles could afford to sit Owens' butt on the bench all season.
Please.

Right. The Browns are talking about getting rid of Andre Davis, not Antonio Bryant: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/11238394624501.xml&coll=2
Peter Warrick is about to get released and would look like a good candidate, but his agent is Drew Rosenhaus. It's hard to see the Eagles running to Drew Rosenhaus to replace Terrell Owens.

If I was Reid, I would welcome TO back and do the following:
1. Play TO every preseason snap at WR, Kick coverage and punt coverage.
2. Tell every QB outside of McNabb never to throw the ball to TO. So, when he's been torching grocery baggers in the 4th quarter, the QB dumps it off the 4th string FB.
3. Allow McNabb to throw a couple balls a game to TO, but he should focus more on the other guys after a few completions to TO (most in over the middle patterns).
4. Run atleast 5 sweeps to his direction each half.
After two weeks of this, ask TO if he is still "unhappy". If he is, tell him he will continue to get more bruises than completions until he feels "happier". After all, Reid's perfectly within his right as head coach to use TO in the exact manner he would use some 4th string undrafted free agent in the preseason.

Owens attends Falcons-Ravens game
Associated Press
ATLANTA - Terrell Owens was at a football game Saturday night. Just not one involving the Philadelphia Eagles.
Unhappy with his contract and sent home for a week by the Eagles, Owens attended the Atlanta Falcons' preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens at the Georgia Dome.
The receiver has a home in Atlanta and plenty of time on his hands after getting kicked out of Eagles camp, the fallout from a heated dispute with coach Andy Reid. He can't return to camp until Wednesday, but has made it clear he won't be happy without a new contract.
Philadelphia has steadfastly refused to redo the seven-year, $49 million deal that Owens signed before last season.
Owens, who was sitting four rows behind the Falcons bench, declined comment when approached by a reporter.
While the Falcons desperately need a big-time receiver, team officials have said privately that there's no chance to trading for Owens.

For the first time in this entire debacle, I'm starting to think TO does need a new contract. I vastly underestimated how much he needs to get a clue. 49 million isn't even in the ballpark.

they better work their shit out and TO better get back on the field. I just took him with my 3rd round pick in my fantasy draft, and while i stocked up on enough receivers so i'll be okay if he doesn't play, it'd be damn nice if he could get me some points!
