Not many people I encounter enjoy this terrific single malt. We dont have choices here in the states for this, only the 15 year option. Have you had a chance to enjoy both? If so, are the differences subtle enough to weigh out?

I've tried the standard 10-yr old Laphroaig before and bought this 11-yr old as a special limited "edition" last year, both are very good but the limited edition is a tiny bit more mellower. Both should be more rugged than the 15-yr old, but I haven't tasted that one myself, only listened to opinions from others.
I certainly don't have the most refind palate, but the 10 year old with a tablespoon of water tastes exactly like the 15 year old to me.
(It feals good to display my ignorance in public like this.)

Laphroaig is certainly one of the more unique whiskies, but Lagavulin comes close to that peaty flavor. Most Islay whiskies hint at various degrees of saltwater, seaweed and peat, but Talisker (of the western Highlands) also is somewhat similar.

Lagavulin(16) is the best generally available Islay malt IMO. Most all of them, however, have that smokey/salty taste. It is what Islay malts are known for, and they play it up. Lag will also run you a bit more than Laphroaig.

FWIW, the best bargain single malt that I have had is the Balveine 10 year old. It's pretty cheap b/c it is only 10 years old, but it is also pretty mild and smooth. Nothing like the complexity of an Islay malt, but not harsh either.

The best that I have ever had is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label. That was my present to myself when I got engaged. It's like drinking velvet. I don't see me getting another bottle until I have a kid or win the lottery.

Oh, and since we are swapping stories, I once tasted some Lagavulin that had been "double aged" in sherry casks. It was like normal Lagavulin, but with a heavy sherry taste underneath it all. Way too heavy and complex for normal consumption, IMO, but a very unique experience. (I don't think that it is available here. The guy who had it got it in Scotland).

Oh--and this thread has me itching for some single malts.

I used to be a fall down drunk, if I had a single beer, I was gonna be at that bar all night long. never failed. I started to drink, I got drunk, I kept on drinking, I passed out.

A number of times I awoke hooked up to machinery at the local hospital.

Took two rounds of therapy to break the addiction/habit, though I still drank. Then my first marriage snapped and I spent 6 months, quite literally , drunk.

I haven't been truly inebriated since I think.....

I can drink all i want now, the urge to over-indulge is simply non-existant anymore.

I do love my scotch though, but I haven't got a collection like some of these. I am envious =)

I've picked up Balvenie a couple of times. If you like it, I recommend Aberlour's 10yo offering. To me, it has a lot more flavor than the Balvenie. They are roughly the same price, but Aberlour has started to grow in popularity and price.

As for the Blue Label. You speak the truth. It is amazing stuff. I had a couple glasses a few months back when I was being schmoozed by a sales guy over dinner. Never actually possessed a bottle. Maybe when I win the lottery.

Thanks...I am a hotel and restaurant major, and am will study this type of stuff later in my program.

As for the flavored vodka, I always though it was a move to expand the lines and to tap into the "mix" departments. I know Smrinoff and Absoulthas a big line, and though they were quality vodka producers (never had the vodka of either).

When we were in Helsinki about this time last year, me, my boss, and one of my coworkers pretty much cleaned out the bar at the Scandic hotel in downtown Helsinki. We had some raspberry vodka, lemon vodka, and orange vodka that was outstanding. I don't remember much after that, except for the sauna in my boss's room, then going on to the balcony immediately afterwards in the -20 degree weather to roll in the snow, then throw beer bottles into the construction site next door.

Malt is one of the ingredients in whiskey. There are several kinds of whiskey, scotch, bourbon, etc. It's also broken into two camps, single malt, and blended. Most whiskeys in the US are blended. Seagram's, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, they are all blended whiskeys. Most of the whiskey that comes from Scotland is single malt, and there are distinctive areas that produce varying flavors. I, myself, prefer the Islay style, as they usually have more of a peat moss flavor to them.

As for port, it usually referrs to a specific kind of dessert wine that comes from the Oporto region of Portugal. It is usually much sweeter than dinner red wines. There are several varieties of this as well. The two most known are ruby ports and tawny ports. I prefer the tawny ports. And, as for most kinds of wine, there are certain years that are known to have produced exceptional batches.

Malt is a common grain. It's one of the base components of beer. However, in regards to whiskey, different kinds of malts have different flavors once distilled into whiskey. Single malt scotches are just that, distilled from a particular kind of malt mash that is brewed only one time. Blended whiskeys are made from a mixture of malt mashes, some of which may be brewed multiple times, which lowers the overall quality of the product, but also lowers the price, allowing for mass production. Since they cost more, generally tast better, and fewer bottles are made, the single malt scotches get the "premium" designation.

Ah to complete my thoughts from above, and add onto what the others have said.

A single malt scotch is the result or product of a single distiller's efforts for a season or year. In other words, they take all of the whisky from a single of their "treatments" for a single year and age it in casks, combine the results of the years work, dillute is a bit, bottle it and sell it as a "single malt scotch".

A blended whisky is made by a distiller that purchases portions of other distillers' single malts, and combines them together. Hopefully the result is a scotch that is greater than the sum of it's single malt parts. Some blends like the Johnny Walker Blue mentioned above are better, well smoother and more complex than many of the single malts.

For anyone starting out with Scotch I recommend trying a variety to determine your specific tastes. Fine liquor stores carry miniature bottles of the single malts and blends, so you can see if you like something for $5 rather than $75.

As a guide
Islay scotches are smoky and peaty with a bit of a saltiness.
Speyside scotches are salty, and smoky and peaty.
Highland scotches are lighter than the Islays and Speysides, much less smoke and peat.

Last but not least. Don't drink it straight, and don't drink it over ice or with cold water soda or other wise. The cold kills the taste. If you are drinking cheap stuff(Scotch or otherwise)to have a good time, ice it up and get lit, that is fine. If you are trying to actually taste the scotch, then cut it with room temp bottled water. I usually go one fourth to one third water. The water really brings out a lot of the flavor and scents of the scotch. I used to think it was silly or at least not very manly to "cut" the scotch, but the difference is quite notable.

When I bought my house it had the wet bar (located behind the bar in my photo) and I decided to buy a mountain of booze to go with it. The liquor is more of a decoration than a statement on my current drinking habits.

To be honest, I expected to entertain a bit more than what happened, and even when I did people rarely drank.

So now, I make a mixed drink every so often. More often, I put something in a coffee.

I think the Stoli flavored vodkas are pretty darn good, but it would be almost as easy to flavor a drink with something else. For instance, instead of having a vanilla vodka it would be just as east to put vanilla in a vodka, or have vanilla schnapps.

And when you do, make sure they're Grey Goose and Patron Silver.

Don't worry, those are two of my absolute favorites... *licks lips*

The higher end tequilas are very sippable. Cuervo Gold is best thrown down the back of your throat without touching your tongue. So no. I really like Don Julio. It's a nice change of pace from scotch.

Desnudo has it right. Cuervo Gold was great while I was in college, and then later when I wanted to get drunk. It is passable in Margaritas, but really the difference in taste and smoothness is remarkable between gold and the more "premium" tequilas. Along with Patron, I find the Herradura offerings to be very good and relatively low priced(a bit cheaper than Patron).

Thats a pretty nice, and pricey, cabinet for 4 college guys.

I sometimes wonder how profitable liquor stores can be.

They can be very profitable. Especially when they're right on the other side of the border of a state that doesn't allow alcohol sales on Sunday. Especially on holiday weekends in the summer.

Though working those weekends can be a bitch.

I always wonder about them. You don't need a high level of employee, dont have to pay for anything expect the bills to run the place (rent, electric), the alcohol is your product (so no assembly, ect). Just wonder about the legal work.

Patron Silver is about $35-$40 for 750ml
I like, maybe prefer, the Patron Reposado($40-$50) or Patron Anejo($35-$40) as well.

Also a nice thing about the Patron tequilas, is they market 350 ml bottles for about half price. So you can taste and compare these for a bit less than many of the others.

Also really once you have tried any of the above, you will lose any regard for Cuervo Gold. Which is odd, because that is what so many people think Tequila tastes like.

Smirnoff

All can be mixed with coke, so I'm all about the economies of scale...

I've Never tried Cabo Wabo, but I've heard good things about it from a not too stodgy at all friend. She says she likes it, because it is much better than Cuervo. In my mind not exactly wild praise, but it tells me it is probably at least a cut above "the Gold".

In the fridge there is about a half case of Bud Light and another case on the floor next to the fridge.

This is about all I drink alcohol wise so I always make sure I have a little bit of all of everything on hand at all times.

EDIT: All the hard stuff isn't in a "cabinet", its all in the freezer.

ive mixed it with coke, its not too good but its not too bad either, i personally think goldschlager is just better to drink straight rather than mixing it.

I think so too. It's sweet enough where you don't really need to add a sugar drink. I've actually tried sipping it before, and it's not half bad. I wouldn't recommend more than one glass though.

LOL....I meant you do you mix it. Spending night and day on this project for school the last three days, your brain gets overloaded. I do like a shot called Liquid Cocaine, with a mix of Goldschlager and Aftershock.

My liquors in stock vary, but I always have plenty of chilled Bombay Sapphire gin on hand. Right now I have some very nice 15 year old Macallan scotch, Ketel One vodka, Bailey's and Maker's Mark. Plus about 20 bottles of various wines.
