Rules from Quick

Who should be on the Mount Rushmore of Sporstcasters?

Your argument must include exactly four contenders - no lists of ten, or streams of consciousness allowed. Once you have cast your support for a list of four, you are licensed to debate the merits of your choices against others... but only in terms of "what should make the final list of four?

My list:

Harry Caray
Howard Cosell
Vin Scully
John Madden

Howard Cosell (The man.)
John Madden (Most popular football personality past, present, future.)
Chick Hearn (Baseball has a lot of guys who called their team's games for decades, when I think of the NBA however, this is the only guy who stands out like that.)
Mel Allen (Baseball's god. I still love to hear him say "Thhhiiis week in baseball" when I watch ESPN Classic.)

Johnny Most was the Chick Hearn of Boston...while not a textbook type he was certainly more memorable...

And you could say Marty Glickman was a bigger name than Johnny Most. I went with the Lakers guy because even though I hate them, I believe they've passed the Celtics as the Yankees of the NBA.

First guy to say anything remotely close to the word "Mussburger" gets one in the back of the head...

Sorry for bumping the two-month old thread, but I thought I had an original thought in my head (unlikely) when I said to myself earlier "Nobodie's posted a sportscaster rushmore...that's a gud ideer!". Thankfully I did a search before I posted. Sigh.

Mine:

Harry Caray - 50 years calling games, and always entertaining, Caray is a lock. Plus, he would look more than excellent carved into a mountainside.

Howrd Cosell - Another mortal lock (what the hell does that mean anyway, 'mortal lock', sounds like an opening band for Krokus). Cosell and Ali was groundbreaking stuff, and Howard could always make you feel like you were watching something important take place.

Al Michaels - Can't believe there's no love for Al in the house. Monday Night Football, "Do you believe in miracles?!?", 89 San Francisco world series with a heaping helping of earthquake? Al can call just about any sporting event, any place, any time.

Keith Jackson - What a voice. Jackson drips auditory nostalgia, his old-school delivery and cadence makes you feel like you're listening to a radio the size of a refrigerator in a 1950's suburb.

Also got to get a shot out for Jim Lampley. Working for HBO boxing almost exclusively these days, Jim doesn't get much exposure, due to boxing's sporadic appeal and his pay-per-view employers. He's a hell of a broadcaster, always right on top of the action yet knowing when the action should speak for itself. I' d love to see Lampley get a shot at the NFL, he'd sound like sweet fucking Jesus compared to the heinous panel of chuckling mongoloids that cackles away on CBS.
