When and Why did the Army cancel the Commanche program? If you could point me to an informative story, I would appreciate it.

CNN.com had a story on this yesterday, FYI.
Just sounded like they are cutting their losses.
The strategy of making "the world's coolest helicopter" just didn't justify the pricetag.

Really it boils down to the thing was ridicously expensive for the problems that it still had.
I think it was one of those neat cold war ideas that really didn't pan out in the end.

----
With the development of UCAV technology, the aquisition and operational cost of a high maintenace/high training platform designed for the coldwar was,um, high. It is the policy of the Rumsfeld DoD to cut away costly and un-needed projects to focus the money on "transformational" technologies and systems that will give the US a decisive edge on the modern battlefield.
The goal is to use America's unequaled bounty to accelerate the warfighting technology curve.
I can't wait until we invent the lightsaber and the force-field.

the UAV/UCAV and such is a huge deal. That and the GPS are the two biggest things (IMHO) in the last 50 years or so, if you don't count the ICBM as a viable weaon.

This link doesn't work, and I'm very interested to find out what took so long to apply Val Kilmer's discovery in Real Genius to modern day weaponry.
Don't forget blasters, I want blasters too.

"blasters" they really are working on. No stun setting in real life though, just "slice through like butter".

heh I would say the ICBM was the best weapon never fired, as it helped stop the Cold War in its tracks with its assurance of complete mutual destruction.

I still remember the game that tried to show what a nuclear war was like. Of course I never tried to win that game, instead I always ended up with nuclear armageddon :D
