It is fun being in NC. More local excitement for the game than most SBs.
I am going for Carolina, but if Denver wins and Manning goes out with his second Super Bowl, then that's pretty cool, too.

Can't wait for this coming Monday (Australia time). It's been a tradition for me and a circle of friends to take the day off work to watch the game (...and start on the beers from 10am) for over 10 years now. We're down to 4 of us for this Monday, but we've found a US-themed bar (yeah, that's a thing over here right now) showing the game and I'll be cheering on Cam and the Panthers.

It's more the way the food is prepared, serving sizes, and the side dishes that aren't 'Austrailan' - ie. cheese fries for example is not something you typically see here, except in US chains like Outback/Hooters/etc.
We've got similar chains to Outback here that are more traditionally Australian (steak with salad sides, fries or baked potato, etc.), but it's more the quality of the beef itself that makes a good Aussie steakhouse. Around Darling Harbour in Sydney there's 2 steakhouses that aren't chains but I rate them as highly as any I've had around the world.

I am loving the way the Broncos are completely being discounted .....again with apparently no chance in this game and from all accounts it is providing huge bulletin board material for them. Being the underdogs has played out well for this team recently and most of this year. Also, reports are that unlike in the New York SB where it was like 20-1 Seahawk to Broncos fans it appear tDenver may even see a slight home crowd advantage at SB50.

I'm glad to finally have a year where I don't have a horse in the race. Admittedly I can get too caught up in the 'I don't want this team to win because they did this, or because of this player or that'. I've got no bones to pick with either team so I am looking forward to just enjoying the game for what it is.

One of the reasons it's been hard for me to really get a good handle on the game. Denver hasn't faced an offense like Carolina's, but Carolina hasn't faced a defense as good as Denver's. That's that side that is most in the air (Car Off vs. Den Def).
I think Denver will probably score ~20 points, and that's if they execute their game plan perfectly. It'll be up to Denver's defense to keep Carolina under that.
And Manning will have to be careful with the ball. Carolina's defense forced a turnover on nearly 20% of their drives - 1st in the league (Denver's defense was 12% of drives ending in a TO). Not only that, but offenses scored against Carolina on 26.5% of drives (1st in the league - Denver's defense was 2nd with giving up a score on 26.9% of drives). Denver can not afford to waste any opportunity. Carolina has enough offensive fire to make up for a few bad breaks. Denver does not. Not against Carolina's defense. One red zone turnover will probably lose the game for them (if their defense is keeping them in it).
(Now that I said that, watch Denver win 38-13...)

I see this game pretty much going like SB42. The story is almost the same other than that 1 win by Atlanta this year. The Denver defense will limit what the Panther's offense is able to do with a strong rush and hold them under 20. Can Denver get to 20 points? Well, like 42, there is a Manning under center. A late drive pushes them to 20 points and a 20-17 victory.

I kind of think this game will go similar to that actually, with the Panthers getting out quick and the Broncos trying to come back...but I think ultimately it will be a 10+ victory for the Panthers. 35-21 or something around there is my guess.

I'm tentatively excited about this game. Hopeful that the Broncos D can keep things close and maybe they steal it in the end. But realistically I have a feeling this is going to be a classic 80's-style Super Bowl where it is never really in doubt past the first quarter.

I get the feeling that something along the lines of this will be how it goes down. I just have a feeling that while Carolina may look more impressive throughout, the bounces and breaks will go the Broncos way to keep them in it for a late drive win.

Pretty much this. Denver cannot turn the ball over. I can't state that in any different way. I don't see a way Denver can win this football game if the offense turns the ball over 3 or more times and I have a tough time seeing how it can win with 2 turnovers.
On the other side, I'm really, really, really sick of the lack of respect this defense continues to get. Look at this quote from Barmell:
The truth is that the Broncos aren't an especially great fit for this Panthers offense. You'd want a defense who can stand up in short-yardage situations, and the Broncos are the second worst short-yardage run defense in the league (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl), ahead of only Carolina. (Remember that when the camera pans over to Riverboat Ron before a fourth-and-short.) If you wanted to construct a defense that was designed to stop Carolina, you'd want penetrating interior linemen who could blow up plays in the backfield, rangy inside linebackers who could run with Newton and tight end Greg Olsen (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10475/greg-olsen), and safeties who weren't going to get burned deep.
Really? Ok, he's dead on about the Broncos in short yardage. But the rest of the drivel? Denver has interior lineman that penetrate and blow up plays. (they have the title of DE, but in the Denver front they play more like DT's.) Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson do just that. Marshall and Trevathan are solid linebackers. The safeties really only get burned deep when they are hurt and their backups are in.
Denver has not faced a Cam Newton this year. Carolina hasn't faced Denver either. This Denver defense built around "speed rushers" held opposing rushing offenses to 3.3 yards per play this year. It isn't like Denver had massive leads and teams stopped trying to run against them. It was actually the opposite. Teams were in virtually every Denver game and tried to run all day. Very few could.
Look, Carolina is a great football team and they may blow Denver the hell out. It wouldn't be shocking to see Carolina have this thing finished by the end of the first quarter.
But I don't think that's going to happen. I think the Denver defense is a lot better than people think it is. A vast majority of the "experts" picked Denver to lose against NE because of Brady and the Pats. It was only AFTER the game where everyone started making excuses for the Patriots flaws. I think we are going to see the same thing today. Win or lose, I think the Denver defense is going to make things very, very hard on Carolina.
If I'm wrong, it'll be the first time all season I'll have been wrong about this defense, so I'll take it. Here is to a good game. Good luck Panthers fans. May the game be decided by the players. No early injuries, no ridiculous calls either way. . . just a good solid game of football where the best team wins.

I think Carolina wins it 23-18. They jump out to a 20-3 half time lead, but the Broncos spend the whole second half chipping away until Carolina scores their only points on a 50-plus yard field goal with about a minute left. The choice to kick a FG on 4th and 14 from that distance will be seen as a ballsy one, but Riverboat Ron shows faith in his kicker and is rewarded with a ring when Brock Osweiler's hail mary from the Denver 39 bounces around for a second before falling to the turf.

So what are the general thoughts on the impact it would have on Manning's overall career if he goes out with a win today?
He'd be the first to do it with 2 teams, right?
I think Manning's biggest game for his overall legacy happened 2 weeks ago. Not only that he won, but how the game was won. Unless he has a disaster game today, he'll be on par with Brady in QB rating for playoff games. He will finish his career 3-1 against Brady in championship games.
Getting another Super Bowl would help his legacy, sure, but losing a game where the team isn't the favorites wouldn't hurt him that much either. (again, unless he puts up an epic clunker)
In terms of this game, I think the more important thing for legacies rests with the Denver defense. An epic game from them and they are going to go down as one of the best defenses of all time. If the game goes how some people think and Carolina has this over by the first quarter or Cam runs wild. . . and they just go down as a good defense that lost when it counted.

Thoughts on first quarter:
1) I don't understand the damned controversy. The ball hit the ground and then moved. They kept saying his hand was under it, it wasn't. That simply was not a catch.
2) Horrible on Talib. That could/should have cost Denver. I don't even want to hear weak/poor call there. Get your emotions in check and be smart. Run off the field and be happy with another stop.
3) The Denver defense is pretty good, huh?
4) Hated seeing Stewart get hurt.
5) This is what Denver needed to do to win the game. Note, I didn't say Denver is going to win the game. In any scenario Denver was going to win the game, it was going to be by playing in front, not behind. Great quarter for the Denver defense.

Get the sack called, score a TD off of the next possession and. . . then what? You can't challenge a fumble later in the game. You can't challenge a key deep completion. Just a horrible challenge.

Only 2 per game. And if you win both you get a 3rd. So they are done.

Denver looks vastly superior so far and its only a 6 point game, so I can't complain too much. Halftime adjustments will be interesting. Need to see a lot more of Greg Olsen in the 2nd half. Also, if Stewart's ankle is holding him back, that leaves Cam as the only serious rushing threat, which is a real problem. But it seems lke its mostly just Denver's D dominating.

Thoughts at halftime:
1) Panthers will start running Newton more in the second half. he's caused Denver problems with that. Denver will have to be ready for it.
2) The Denver offense has been horrible, as usual. Manning screwed up what should have been a two score lead with the turnover. Constant missed on 3rd and 2 or 3. Denver will need to put together a drive if they want to win this game. I'm not convinced they can.
3) As I stated earlier, Talib should have been ejected from the game. That was as cheap of a play as you will ever see in the NFL. i knew we shouldn't have signed former Patriots. (j/k)
4) Denver has ONE horse in this game on offense. They need to start feeding CJ Anderson the ball and forget the Hillman carries. This is going to have to be like a Terrell Davis situation. Run him until he pukes, then run him some more. He's the one guy causing the Panthers fits.
5) I don't understand the Panthers on that final drive. They kind of played it like "if we score, that's good, if we don't, that's good" This looks like it will end in a close game and I don't believe it's likely the Denver defense is going to fold in the second half. You want to win, you have to score when you get in range. They played that far to casually for my taste.
6) First position of the second half is critical for both sides IMHO. if the Panthers roll down the field and get a TD while Denver goes 3 and out, the score may look close but I think we all know who will have the advantage. I hope the defense comes out firing early.

Well, the first drives of the second half went the way I wanted them to. This Denver offense is so terrible. I just don't know how we score if we have to late in the game. I have never seen a Super Bowl team with this inept of an offense. Can't run, can't throw, can't convert third and short, can't convert on third down, can't score in the red zone, don't get a ton of big plays. . . I mean you think they could do ONE think above average.
All I hoped at the start of the game is that they wouldn't turn the ball over. Just don't screw the game up. So far they are at least doing an ok job of that, but some of that is complete luck.
Hope we can get another defensive TD this game. We might need it to win.

The ball hit the ground and moved. It's a simple, simple call. As someone who hates the catch rules and doesn't understand them half the time, that was the simplest one I've seen this year. The ball never hit the ground though. I get that if you go out of bounds you have to maintain control when you hit the ground, but if the rule is that while being in the centre of the field the ball can't move at all even if control is recovered without the ball hitting the ground, then the rules are more f'd up than I thought.

I've been CONSISTENT all year with this team. I'll repeat as you seem to miss it:
The Denver defense is the 70's Steelers. I's dominant. it is historically good.
The Denver offense is horrible. It turns the ball over like water and struggles to do anything game in, game out. Due to this fact, the defense gets put on the field a lot and ends up playing a lot of plays. They end up being put into horrible short field positions repeatedly. (as you see right now)
Because of this, I've thought Denver would have a tough time beating both NE and Carolina. When the offense needs to get a drive, they don't. Yet the defense just keeps stepping up and up and up.

One other note: EVERY QB Denver has faced this year says the same things. "I missed some open receivers" "we had a few drops" "We left a lot of plays of the field"
I don't know about you, but I think maybe that might be a result of the devastating pass rush Denver gives every play. Denver takes away your margins. You want to score, you have to put the ball in a perfect place. You have to make a lot of tough catches. You have to avoid getting sacked to put your team in a hole.
By the way, for all the people who think I'm a Denver homer: The refs just missed a key PI call. That was a very easy call to make and one that should have been made.

Carolina made a few unforced errors in the first quarter, Cam had time and overthrew a couple guys badly most notably. Since then Denver's D gets most of the credit, but I do think Carolina put themselves in a bit of hole early all by themselves.

Seriously? His hand was NOT under the ball, it was on the side and the picture clearly shows that. Afterward, the ball moved all over his stomach. It was an EASY call. I just don't get the anger.

That shot shows him with possession. Yay single shots!
When the receiver is going to the ground the ball is allowed to touch the ground, however, if the ball moves (which it did in this case) it is deemed that possession was not maintained throughout the catch and the pass is incomplete.
Had the receiver not lost grasp after the ball touched the ground, it would have been the a catch, but it was sliding down his leg till he firmly grabbed it.
So in this case the single shot showing the ball hitting the ground, does mean something because we know after he loses grasp of the ball.

10 minutes left and this game is still lacking an MVP.
Miller.

If Carolina were winning, Ealy would be the easy MVP choice.

It's not a stretch to say that both teams would probably rather have their defense on the field at this point.

Miller.
If Denver wins, they'll give it to Peyton for game management?

Carolina made a few unforced errors in the first quarter, Cam had time and overthrew a couple guys badly most notably. Since then Denver's D gets most of the credit, but I do think Carolina put themselves in a bit of hole early all by themselves.
You are correct there, he made the poor throw to a wide open WR when he hadn't faced the pressure yet. Carolina did make things difficult on themselves early.

If Carolina wins without some sort of spectcular play by someone, Ealy should probably get it.

Miller may be a choice. Would really be a hard game to pick and MVP for at this point; barring a major play in the last few minutes of this one.
Denver's outside DE is almost offline on just about every play

Yeah I'd agree w/ that as well.

This seriously needs to be Peyton's last game. He looks like he has hit that wall and that wall has kicked his ass.

Panthers just look like they can't do anything. And Devner looks like they know that, so lets handoff 70 times in a row.

That play right there was sad to see. 3rd and 9 and Peyton handing the ball off.

So Troy, you enjoy this style D a lot more when it's your team playing it? I seem to recall some very different descriptors when you talked about Seattle playing a very similar style ;)
That said, wow has this turned into Ealy vs Von. Loving watching these D's play. I was very curious how Cam would perform on this stage/against this level of D and had he been more accurate early on, I'd imagine there'd be a much different game going on at this point. Also quite curious why Carolina hasn't tried to move to a quicker passing game, seems like they're either being too stubborn or don't think they can execute that style.

To be fair, he is still better than 50% of the starting quarterbacks in the league. But yeah, he's looking old.

I thought the same thing, and yet it was proven right. Pretty crazy to see three straight runs with 6:30 left in a 1 possession game.

It has to hurt like hell to get your arm hit like that when trying to throw.
Cam now knows! :)
