Zelda and Fire Emblem for me

Some of my most anticipated games:

Persona 5 - At the top of my most anticipated list for the second year in a row, the release is now slated for this summer. Hopefully the series with my favorite RPG in Persona 4: Golden doesn’t get pushed back again.

NieR Automata - The followup to one of my all time favorite games, this time adding gameplay from Platinum Games to the storytelling of Yoko Taro. Before it was announce this was basically a dream combination that I'd never actually expected to have a chance to be made.

Darkest Dungeon - The early access for this was one of the best things I played last year, though I put it aside after around 10 hours wanting to experience the full release. With the 2D dungeon crawler slated to be completed in later this month I can’t wait to jump back into it.

Dark Souls 3 - More Dark Souls is one of the easiest things in the world to get excited about.

Kentucky Route Zero: Act IV - In November Cardboard Computer said Act IV was almost done. The first three acts have been phenomenal, but it has now been 20 months since the release of Act III. Hopefully it’s not much longer a wait, since I can’t wait to return to The Zero.

Zero Escape 3: Zero Time Dilemma - It’s actually happening! The final part of the Zero Escape trilogy is getting made after it seemed like the series was dead. Instead we will get to see what follows Virtue's Last Reward’s ending that set up a the final act.

The Legend of Zelda U - The visuals they’ve shown look amazing and I’m curious so see how Zelda style gameplay will be fit in the large open world direction the game is taking.

Danganronpa 3 - I love this series of visual novels for its dark humor and murder mysteries.

Firewatch - A beautiful artstyle capturing the wilderness of Wyoming and the sense of mystery provided by the trailers is

Uncharted 4 - I probably won't end up playing it this year being I don't currently plan on getting a PS4 just yet but I love the series.

Fire Emblem Fates - Three seperate campaigns of SRPG gaming and a weird face rubbing feature (https://youtu.be/1ApwiFTBhYs).

Torment: Tides of Numenera - Another entry from last years list, still hoping for a great story driven RPG from it.

The Last Guardian - Like Uncharted I may not play it this year but am eager to see if the long awaited title can live up to the two masterpieces that preceded it.

XCOM 2 - I’ve loved what I've seen of the new direction of playing as a resistance force and am excited for its PC first focus.

Star Fox Zero - I think this is the third game that was my list of most anticipated last year. The gameplay that has been shown has looked fun and I'm excited to see how the campaign plays out after Miyamoto's saying it would be modeled after a TV series.

EDIT: Also really looking forward to the full expansions to The Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity to release so I can finish those and Dragon's Dogma's PC launch.

Rule #1 when you play Foz, Sov and Brian.

Talk Shit?

Get Hit.

we played a pair of games against the same team. First game, they won 3-1. Sov was going for a ball and demo'd an opponent, who swore at him in chat. They then talked shit to us, and of course, we responded in kind.

Next game, we get matched up with the same opponent. I decide I'm going to be Fozzie the Asshole (which is a valid strategy in this game). That guy who started throwing a shit fit? He was their goalie.. so I just ignored the ball and kept driving into him, so he couldn't play goalie. THat drove him nuts, and soon he left the net alone to prevent me from annoying him. We won that second game.

XCOM Long War Modders Working On Standalone Strategy Game | Rock, Paper, Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/01/04/xcom-long-war-mod-standalone/)

The game goes by the name Terra Invicta and it’s currently in “pre-Kickstarter development”, though there’s no word on a launch date for the crowdfunding campaign just yet. The designation “grand strategy” suggests this might be an even longer war and perhaps the tactical battles will be missing entirely? Going off the description on the official site, it sounds almost like a game of diplomacy rather than war:

No, $600 is not "obscenely cheap", especially when you originally said the Rift would be in the 200-400 range.

Let's see what Sony charges for their VR. All that's been said so far was it would be the price of a new system.

I really don't think $600 is that bad for an early adopter price that will surely drop as it gets more mainstream and mature.

Their justifications for the price are pretty horrible though, they should STFU. The people willing to spend $600 are going to with or without an explanation.

Pretty much. I'm not going to be an early adopter because not only is $600 a little high for my budget, but I would also need to make some major upgrades for my PC.

That being said, I don't think $600 is bad at all for the first generation of something like this in technology. Did they bungle the communcation and managing of expectations? They sure did. The price isn't bad when you compare it to other areas of technology, though.

Spending $600 on VR glasses doesn't seem any crazier than buying a $1000 video card (neither makes a lick of sense to me), and there's dozens of those on offer.

People can mock e-sports if they want. Doesn't change the fact that, personally, I find them very entertaining. I used to sit down, beer in hand and watch Starcraft II matches. Uber dork? Maybe, but it was entertaining. It's not boring twitch or people playing Fallout, it is legit fierce competition featuring elite players that do things I couldn't dream of.

I am very excited about XCom 2. I played the hell out of XCom: Long War, but finally got burned out by the grinding nature of it. I saw the pattern that was taking shape and I knew it wasn't going to be fun. That said, I do miss it.

I have no problem with e-sports. I have tried to watch some "League of Legends" matches, but I've never really played any of those types of games and I have no idea what's going on. At all. I could probably follow a Starcraft II match, since I played the original Starcraft, but between the amazing speed at which these guys play and not having a firm concept of what's happening, it's largely just a lot of noise, yelling, and flashing lights to me.

I care about the NFL the most still, but the League of Legends pro scene is very clearly #2 for me. College football is a very, very distant 3rd behind pro LoL at this point. Its been that way for about 3 years now.

I don't care at all about the "is it a sport" argument, that is 100% irrelevant. Its a legitimate professional competition, whether it gets or deserves "sports" designation. The mainstream coverage is pretty bleh too, its typically extremely ignorant. People care way too much when Colin Cowherd says "esports is dumb, stupid nerds", and people give way too much validation to Mark Cuban saying "esports is awesome, you guys are awesome!"

But Rick Fox did buy a team (that has a terrible roster outside of one player and is likely to struggle), and a couple guys who are part owners in the Sacramento Kings are part of a group that bought another team, there is some serious money coming into the game now. Its gonna be interesting to see what that does to things.

I had no idea something like esports existed.

I dont follow DOTA or CSGO but I know both are huge and growing. For League, the world championship 3 years ago sold out the Staples Center in about 15 minutes. 2 years ago the world finals were in a soccer stadium in Korea (the same one the world cup finals were played in when korea/japan hosted I believe) and sold out quickly. Last year the North American finals were at Madison Square Garden.

Viewership numbers from the world finals of the most recent season that took place in Europe in October (source LoL Esports (http://www.lolesports.com/en_US/articles/worlds-2015-viewership))

For the one month championship tournament: 334 million unique viewers.
Average concurrent viewers for the course of the entire month long event: 4.2 million.
Peak Concurrent Viewers for the world finals (a 1 day best of 5 between the two finalists): 14 million people
total unique viewers for the finals: 36 million people

Its pretty darn crazy.

I know Rock Band 4 came out last year.. but we just bought the band in the box xb1 version. We also purchased the cymbals, but those are on back order.

We have played so much Rock Band over the years and it's been a long time since we had friends over playing into the wee hours. Our old accessories were beat to death, so we figured it was time for new ones.

I love all the improvements, especially how responsive the drums are this time around. Many of our purchased songs showed up as purchased so all we had to do was select install... pretty cool feature.

Not sure how ps4 works.. similar I assume. I guess keeping the old game cd's will allow you to import from the cd - for ones you purchased.. I just went into the store within Rock Band 4 and anything you have previously purchased will show up as "purchased" so you just click on the song and then install.

That alone was worth the RB 4 purchase as we have a ton of songs and many of them are playable in RB 4.

Yeah, I think it just checks which disk you insert and then unlocks all those songs in the store.

Tigers on the Hunt.

Check out the link and the sample picture of the game. It looks dated but should look familiar to anyone that played board war games in the early 80's.

Will have to check it out if the reviews are good.

Tutorial videos for upcoming Tigers on the Hunt now available - The Wargamer | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 & Blu-ray walkthroughs & reviews (http://www.wargamer.com/Article/10337)
Tigers on the Hunt is an upcoming squad-level, tactical game coming from Matrix Games. It's a World War 2 game that will allow you to simulate any battle from the Eastern, Western, or Mediterranean theaters and it has a ton of units and maps to get it done. I've been warned that only hardcore grognards need apply:

Tigers on the Hunt boasts a ferocious and adaptive AI which will dynamically respond to a player’s maneuvers. Players can enjoy massive battles across up to 12 connected geomorphic maps with over 200 Infantry units, 100 Support Weapons, 100 Ordnance pieces and 50 Vehicles per side.

The sequence of play is more complex and interactive than any other WW2 turn based PC tactical wargame: game turns are broken down into 16 segments per turn, 8 segments per side and battlefields can range from small to huge in size and complexity, up to 3.8km x 1.6km in size and 200 infantry squads, 50 guns and 50 vehicles per side.
If you understand what that these paragraphs mean, then Tigers on the Hunt is for you!

For those of us for whom that reads like cuneiform script, don't worry, Matrix has our backs. They're currently in the process of making tutorial videos so that we can download the game on release day and jump right in. Or at least wade in at an above average pace. The first two videos are below, and there are (hopefully) more coming.

Look for Tigers of the Hunt to be released soon, but until then watch the videos and see what you can expect.

Been enjoying The Curious Expedition on Steam while I await X-Com 2. I'd describe it as part rogue-like, part Oregon Trail/Seven Cities of Gold. It's Early Access but TBH feels complete to me. Travel to randomly generated locations around the world, recruit explorers/local tribesmen/pack animals and go searching for fame and fortune. And die. A lot.

Combat takes place similar to Guild of Dungeoneering but with dice rather than cards - each character has certain traits, and you roll the dice for each, combining different rolls for different actions.

Since I'm unlikely to be playing XCom-2 anytime soon, I'm wondering ... is there another game(s) that has a very similar feel to the units of XCom?

Preferably something just a little less brutal in difficulty would be even better (I've never beaten any XCom game, really haven't ever come close).

I love the attachment feeling you get for veterans, the strategy that goes with figuring out when/how to get noobies their first experience, and the size of your troop roster feels about right to me.

Suggestions?

So I learned three things today.

1 - There's a new Master of Orion coming out! (Wow! How did I miss that!)
2 - It's being made by the World of Tanks people. (Oh shit...this could be bad, but I could give it a chance).
3 - They're already locking 1 of the races unless you buy the Collector's Edition. (Nope. Done. Fuck Off. Next.)

I'm looking forward to it, but am glad that I have enough games that I wasn't looking to play it right away since I just got an email from Best Buy saying my order was delayed until March 14th.

I couldn't even find a preorder for the special edition.

It was incredibly hard to find. I was checking everywhere after the Direct that announced it, it was available for under 30 minutes through Best Buy and I managed to miss it on Amazon completely when refreshing constantly hoping I could switch my order over there and cancel the one with Best Buy.

I did end up getting a shipping confirmation from Best Buy around an hour ago so it looks like my special edition is on the way. I don't mind it coming late, but with how few were available and being Nintendo rarely reprints something like this I was worried a month long delay meant there wasn't one coming.

Looks like I will be able to start Conquest before too long though.

I got a little cash bonus from my employer for 15 years service, and decided to do something I never thought I would do: I bought a Wii U. The last Nintendo console I owned was an N64 (excluding the DS).

I just see no real reason to own a PS4/XBox One if you have a good gaming PC. I hadn't turned it on for probably 6 months and gave it to my brother-in-law so he could play the new Street Fighter. The only upcoming game I'm excited about is No Man Sky, and - shock/horror - it's on PC anyway - same as NBA 2K, which was the whole reason I got back into console gaming years back.

I played Zelda: Wind Walker for about 4 hours yesterday, god I missed this. Beautiful graphics that make me feel like I’m watching a Miyazaki film, wonderful characters and gameplay mechanics... You know when you think back to the games you loved as a kid, then you fire them up again and are disappointed? Yeah, it was like that, minus the disappointment.

Just won an Xbox One. Looks to be a limited edition "custom" Gears of War Ultimate.

Set it up last night. After about 2 hours, I was still not able to play as it had not downloaded enough of the game. Man, things have changed in the 7 years since I last played any video games (Wii).

Picking up Disney Infinity 2.0 for my kid from Target tomorrow. I think it's something she would like, and it was $10 for the base, game, and a couple of figures.

Any other games you guys would recommend for a 6.5 year old girl?

I hear you. My brother has an Xbox One and whenever we try to play something, it always seems way overly complicated to get started. We get it working, but it always feels like a struggle.

The experience has made me want to hold on to my Xbox 360 for as long as possible.

As for games for a 6.5 year old girl, my niece is 7 and I think that Disney Infinity game is pretty much all she plays on it. I'll inquire further.

It took me 1/2 hour to just get the system going in the first place. For whatever reason, there were no actual instructions on what to do when first turned on. I tried to follow the onscreen prompt of hitting the Xbox button, but it just kept flashing. Tried everything I could, googled for about 20 minutes until I finally found an answer that there was a sync button on the side of the xbox. Why can't they just include an actual manual for it.

Nevermind that it ran an update for the next 1/2 hour after that.

I think it took less time for me to wipe my computer, install Windows 10, and start up FM15 than it did to get the xbox set up.

Wait, so there's controversy because No Man's Sky has a $60 price tag?

Seriously? At no point in the discussion / hype about it did I ever think it would be anything but a full price game.

Now whether the game will actually deliver on the hype, that's a fair question.
But I'm legit shocked that anyone thought this was going to be an indie priced title.

The game may very well suck, flop, fail, fizzle. But if they deliver on the hype then it's every bit a full price title (especially considering what constitute a AAA game these days).

Bought the game after checking out the reviews. The biggest ding is the clunky interface (hey, its Matrix Games) but old grognards didn't seem to mind. Fair exchange for finally bringing SL/ASL to the PC.

ASL mods are out already - substitute counters, scenarios. This game will be heavily supported by the community.

Just did my first training scenario and I do agree the UI is clunky but it was fun reliving the past for about an hour. Yet to be seen if this will keep my attention but am pretty sure I'll eventually get my $50 worth (if from nostalgia alone).

So on a whim I picked up Stardew Valley this week, because I was bored and needed a break from work. I've heard it compared to Harvest Moon and/or Animal Crossing, but I've never played either of those games, so I can't speak to that. All I know it that I've put in 40 hours since Tuesday.

I don't know exactly what it is about the game, but it's a blast. The graphics and sound are very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and other Square titles from the 90's (this nostalgia is probably a huge part of the allure for me, to be honest). The gameplay is not really especially deep in any one area, but it has enough depth to keep your attention and the real strength is in the breadth of the game - when one thing gets tedious, stop and try something different. Clear your fields for a while with your axe or pickaxe, then go ahead and till the soil and plant some seeds. Each crop will grow only in a specific season, takes a certain amount of time to yield fruit/vegetables/flowers, and they all have different rates of return on sale. To make life easier, use the crafting system to make some Scarecrows to keep your crops safe, or build some sprinklers to avoid having to water your crops every morning. You can wander around town, performing odd jobs as they pop up, or even give gifts to the different villagers to improve their opinion of you. You can fish (and the implementation of fishing is easily the best version of a fishing mini-game I've ever seen), or delve into the mines - but bring a weapon, because there are some bad guys down there. Once you've acquired some resources, talk to the town carpenter, and she can build you a chicken coop or a barn, and you can start raising animals. Another great thing is as you continue to perform these tasks, you gain experience and get better at them. At level 5 (of 10) in each different path, you get the choice to specialize in one aspect of that job - for example, at level 5 farming, you can choose to be a Rancher (bonus to working with farm animals) or a Tiller (bonus to working with crops).

Exploring the social aspect of the game (this is a single player game), once you've built up your reputation among some of the villagers, they'll share their family recipes with you so you can cook or process your farmed goods. They might even ask you to utilize part of your farm for some reason or other - the resident researcher asked me for the use of a small cave on my property. He gave me the choice of fruit bat or fungal research; the research will occasionally benefit me with extra resources. I picked fruit bats, so I occasionally get random fruit in the cave. The choice was only possible because I cultivated a relationship with him by chatting with him, completing tasks for him, and occasionally gifting him something from my farm. The gifting system is pretty great too - you can hand any villager just about anything you acquire. Each villager has a different set of tastes, and will respond differently based on what you give them. You can figure out their tastes through trial and error, or sometimes different villagers will drop clues in conversation, or straight up tell you about other people's tastes.

Then there's the town center, which is in shambles...but there are some mysterious checklists that ask you to provide goods using all of the above methods of gathering/farming/fishing/etc. As you do so, you will unlock new checklists and benefits around town. This really helps encourage you to diversify, as the different checklists will force you to take part in every activity you can to fill them out.

Like I said, there isn't really one thing about the game that I love, but the whole package is pretty awesome. I spent twenty minutes with some graph paper and colored pencils yesterday plotting out my ideal farm to get the most out of my equipment. I haven't done that since...SimCity 2000?

Xbox One owners, get a year of Live for $18 at Target.

Look for a green Xbox Live card near the games with a UPC on the back in the upper right with the number 7 99366 07811 1.

On your phone, go to this (http://www.target.com/p/xbox-live-12-month-gold-59-99/-/A-14897030?clkid=4b8b7d35N8fda6c55f23d10631a7eade9&lnm=79373&afid=Slickdeals+LLC&ref=tgt_adv_xasd0002) link in chrome. From there, go into the options and select "Request Desktop Site". Once loaded, click on " See Low Price in Cart ". It will show $17.98.

Take it to customer service, say you need to price match Target.com. they'll scan the at the register and pull it up on their in store iPad. To process it, they'll need a manager override.

I had no problems at my store buying 2 cards, but you may get shot down depending on who is working. My store literally had 30-40 of these cards I was tempted to buy and sell. I figured 2 years of Live for $37 after taxes was good enough.

Had to laugh at the announcement earlier today that MS is going to start allowing cross-console play. More than one developer of multiplayer games (Naoki Yoshida, who produced Final Fantasy XIV being the most recent one) has stated that the reason there's no cross-console play is because MS refused to do it. It's called Tyranny-a RPG where evil has already won.

Cautiously excited about the game as I work my way through Pillars of Eternity now that the White March is out.

The only qualm I have is that I worry the player's moral choices will be railroaded the same way seemingly every "play as the bad guy" game has gone:

Light side: You come to a crisis of conscience and decide to rebel against the evil ruling elite. You end up fighting your way into the Overlord's chambers to topple him.
Dark side: You come to a crisis of turpitude and decide to take the reins of power for yourself. You end up fighting your way into the Overlord's chambers to topple him.

yeah I worry that this is just PR speaking-that you will find your choices to be limited, and even the "evil" ones aren't that evil in the end. But Obsidian is probably who I want to make such a RPG, so we'll see I guess.

Is EA Access worth it for someone who doesn't care about the latest and greatest? I'd say I'll get at most 5 hours a week to play games, and I've been out of it so long that I have no interest in playing online any time soon, since I'd be so horrendous at it. Only $30 a year, which doesn't seem like that bad a deal to play year old games.

I am playing The Division on PS4 and have went exclusively solo so far. In the Betas I went in group and had fun. Both ways are a lot of fun IMO and I'm not really all that into RPG.

Just hit level 30 in this last night and still really enjoying this one. Haven't had to solo much as I'm playing in a group of 3-5 and we tend to get at least 3 on each night to play for a few hours. Love that the game rewards you for playing in a smart and complimentary way. If you try to blitz through, well, lots of time spent running back to the spot you just died at to pick the mission back up.

Should be fun to work on setting up builds until the next content drop hits too.

So, that new $5 Fallout 4 DLC ...

Lots of bitching but it strikes me mostly as a very mild cost/benefit transaction.

For me, the whole arena/death battle aspect is just beyond silly. Zero interest in using or honestly even experimenting with it. YMMV.

The new items for settlement construction are a fairly mixed bag. Some are purely decorative (shopping carts for example) while others are functional or even highly functional.

They fixed a few very specific situations with the items -- the addition of working lamp posts/street lights was probably among the more obvious things to do, vanilla allowed you to hang lights on the posts but not (effectively) change the stupid bulbs in them. The 100 electricity fusion generator makes life easier for serious builders (and actually makes reasonable sense in the nuclear oriented fallout universe), the addition of a buildable gardening plot makes a couple of settlements with very limited/no dirt sustainable, the addition of a dirt-based powered water pump equalizes the situation for land-locked settlements.

A few other additions that have struck me as being "nice" are the additional lighting options, the introduction of some concrete based structures (walls, etc), a more attractive/natural looking door option, those are things that I've either used already or have plans to use. Still missing is something I saw in a mod: ramps (instead of stairs), which really would make sense to have available, if you can build a load-bearing wall from scratch then you oughta be able to build a passable ramp just as easily.

There's zero story here, the items just become available in your build menus, uncharacteristically there's no other indication that there's new stuff available (I actually expected there to be at least NPC commentary about them, though the traditional "new radio signal" would have been a bit much).

It's kinda there if you want it, easily skipped if you don't. I mean it's not as though there's some sort of multiplayer disadvantage to not picking up this DLC, and you're not missing anything if you aren't into deathmatches with cats vs deathclaws or settlement construction.

So far i have played mainly solo playing side missions and only joining some randoms to run two of the main story missions in hard difficulty, but most of my friends don't play it and also my playing schedule is very limited and random to commit with others.

I've been playing it. I'm not too far into it, I was too sick to play it most of the middle of last week when it came out, and I've been taking it slow and gone through a couple of areas multiple times. I think I've played around 13 hours so far. That said, it's as amazing as you'd expect a souls game to be. Combat is as good as ever, the world and enemy design is still top notch, the boss fights have been excellent. Plenty to explore too, I just found a couple new things in the Undead Village going through it for the third time.

After numerous attempts last night I finally managed to defeat the Abyss Watchers. This is one of my favorite boss fights ever with the waves of watchers fighting you and each other. Yes and no (but mostly no). Each time you beat a boss you get a couple of those currency thingies, and back at the hub there's a few places where you can (eventually, if they're not there yet) spend that currency on unlocking stuff for your next play-through. None of the starting characters ever get any better, but as you unlock things there will be (the chance for) better equipment in the chests and stores. You're always at the mercy of the random number generator, for better or worse.

I think the more stuff you unlock the (slightly) tougher enemies/rooms get, so it could be argued that your character actually get worse as the game goes on. You definitely do improve with time, and I think they've designed the flow pretty well, but the improvement of your own reflexes and/or pattern recognition is mostly what drives your progression. I also couldn't imagine playing it without a controller, though apparently some folks do.

Ramzavail

I think the probably with the controller (for me) is I don't love the Steam Controller and that's collecting dust and the xbox or ps3 controller was always so hard to me to install.

I think if you like Enter the Gungeon, I would look into Dungeon Souls. I actually like this game better and its similar (less the awesome gun finds).

Playing Fallout 4 earlier and happened to stumble into the section where it shows you not only your various game totals but also that of your XBox friends.

I've got 210 hours played so far (across two stars) but I didn't realize how closely my time spent matched Will's. He's at 201 hours. He's discovered more locations, I've completed more quests, our highest level to date is identical.

Gaming seems expensive, figure $60 for a game, another $15 so far in some add-ons. But $75 for 411 hours of entertainment between us? And still a long way from finished with this one. That's like 18 cents an hour.

Any wonder why I don't really go to the movies much anymore?

Movement in Ori feels soooo good, and it only gets better the more powers you unlock. I picked up the Definitive Edition and am going to have to go back and replay it before long for the new areas it added in.

I beat Dark Soul III last night, it's easily my favorite for game of the year so far. Several great and memorable bosses that were incredibly satisfying to beat. Still have more to do in it with an optional area I hadn't found playing through the main game without any kind of guides. Then maybe I'll play a sorcerer and cleric. I'd never used spells before in a Souls game with the Spook the assassin starts with being the first one that got any use from me so it seems fun to finally try.

I also finally picked up Stardew Valley and have put almost 50 hours in so far. I have the greenhouse repaired now and am using it for year round hops production to sell pale ale alongside my cheese and mayonnaise. My orchard is almost finished growing too.

Survival mode for Fallout 4, as currently constituted, is slightly more fun to me than Assassin's Creed was ... and that's one of maybe the three most "this isn't gaming, gaming is fun, this is just ... suffering" experiences I've had.

I'll give it a bit more time (Lvl 8 or so thus far I think) but so far it's kind of like sitting around poking yourself with a sharp object ... that's been heated in a fire ... and is liberally doused with anthrax.

I picked up Pocket Jockey for the 3DS the other day. For less than $8, it's a great horse racing-solitaire mix complete with rudimentary breeding and rpg-like leveling for young horses. Well worth the money!

Have played about 15 hours. With my second bred horse, I was finally able to train a horse up to a speed of 90. Then when I raced him as a 4 year old (a mature horse), I lost three straight races with poor card play. :( After three loses as a mature horse, your horse is forced to retire in the game.

So, I picked a random starting horse named Groovy Soul and won the Royal Derby (the in game Kentucky Derby). Got a lot of lucky card play and used its "front charger" characteristic which gives the horse energy when it runs just in front of another horse in the race. Every horse can have up to one characteristic and two skills. Skills need to be trained (by collecting skill cards) before they will appear on the horse.

Currently breeding a third generation horse (not inbred and hopefully a sprinter) while I race Groovy Soul. You get a new foal (called a JR horse) from two horses that have retired to the farm after finishing the racing career of a mature mode horse (4 year old+) or finshing the training of a new horse in growth mode.

A very well polished solitare card game where you play as a jockey with a really silly story line to explain the mechanics of the game. Though, for some reason as the jockey you can determine which horses can breed together, which I don't get since all the horses have an in game owner.

Also, you can't select which race your horse will run. Your next race is determined by the result of your previous race. So, sometimes that 3 year old that your training gets placed in a G1 with mature horses that goes for a distance your horse is ill equiped to race. So, all you can do is try and grab as many experience and skill cards that you can get.

This is the case most of the time in Pocket Card Jockey. I found there is a situation where you are given a choice. If you have won a race in the previouse year with a horse, when you get to that race again in the following year with the same horse you can choose your next race. Either the race you won last year or a different one.

Good write up Jon. I'm only a little way into it, but already it feels like a big jump forward in terms of the actual writing. I think a ton of time was spent on the game mechanics in the initial release, and both the graphics and writing (especially as far as meaningful dialogue options go) took a bit of a back seat.

I've still clocked up 150 or so hours though, so hey, can't complain too much.

I'm only a little way into it, but already it feels like a big jump forward in terms of the actual writing.

I will simply say that I felt like it really hit its stride around the midpoint (counting heavy sidequesting) of the experience,my first impression (2-4 hours worth) was far more lukewarm than where I ended up.

I've still clocked up 150 or so hours though, so hey, can't complain too much.

Between my first playthrough, then this version where I haven't finished the main storyline yet but did faction stuff that I largely skipped (aside from settlements) in the first go, and about 20 hours worth of fiddling with Survival mode ... yeah, I'm somewhere north of 300 hours total at this point.

Sidequests & all, I had to play at least 25 hours (there were three extended sessions I put into it, plus some smaller bits along the way). And I have still have a few more sidequests to mop up after the main was finished, and that's without counting any additional time I'll put into the settlements that were added. And there's ever how many locations I haven't yet discovered (I would guess there to be 4-8 of those left, at least).

For me, it'll easily get to the 35 hour mark and likely a bit beyond.

I love the new DOOM. It will likely be the biggest surprise of the year since most of what was shown pre-release was multiplayer which never looked very good, but the campaign is great. It's full of fast paced combat arenas full of demons, designed with multiple levels to move around (and you have to be moving at all times), and an arsenal of weapons that are a joy to use.

It joins Wolfenstein with its reboot that managed to do a wondrous job at updating a shooter while holding true to its old school sensibilities.

Yeah and if you don't like it after 30 minutes, you can return it. that's long enough for the tutorial adna few matches.

Just bought both the Witcher 3 DLCs. Hearts of Stone was a little underwhelming, not bad but not up to the high standard the game set. Story was a little silly and not a tremendous amount of new content.

I'm currently part way through Blood and Wine and it is phenomenal. It's almost The Witcher 3.5, the amount of content is staggering, hands down more than 90% of full $60 games out there.

In short, if you own The Witcher you should buy Blood and Wine, today.

I enjoyed Witcher 3 for the time I played it, but the lengthy cut scenes ending up killing it for me. I need to give it another shot though, because the story itself as well as some of the main quests seem to get rave reviews.

Dragon Quest 7 comes out in September. You could also try Tales of the Abyss if you're a fan of the series.

ETA: I'm assuming you already know about the Bravely Default sequel and Fire Emblem Fates.

The best/my favorite 3ds RPG in the last few years is The World Ends With You. It's different, pushes the genre in some different ways, and is pretty good.

Zero Escape 3: Zero Time Dilemma reviews are coming out with the game releasing next Tuesday.

We Got This Covered - 5/5 (http://wegotthiscovered.com/gaming/zero-time-dilemma-review/)
Zero Time Dilemma wraps up the long-running Zero Escape series in style. Presentation issues aside, it's the masterpiece we've been waiting for, and the one that the fans deserve.

Destructoid - 9.5/10 (https://www.destructoid.com/review-zero-time-dilemma-370574.phtml)
Eventually, the poor direction of the story segments stopped bothering me. Not because it got any better (because it didn't), but because the story is so goddamn good. Hands down, Zero Time Dilemma has the best story in the series. It made me laugh, shocked me, sickened me, surprised me, brought a tear to my eye, and taught me to look at Back to the Future in an entirely different light.

PlayStation Insider - 5/5 (http://playstationinsider.com/2016/06/zero-escape-zero-time-dilemma-review-vita)
In conclusion, Zero Time Dilemma is perfect. From it’s presentation to it’s onerous gameplay, this game flawlessly ends this seven year saga. So please take my advice, buy Zero Time Dilemma, 999, and Virtues Last Reward for about $60.00 altogether (you can get Zero Time Dilemma for 32 dollars via Amazon Prime). Encounter the creepy, rewarding, and provocative story, one that’s been the most flawlessly executed to ever grace video games.

Really looking forward to the conclusion of one of my favorite series. Maybe we'll even find out wheter or not Phi is a dog.

I picked up the Long Dark when it first hit early access. The updates aren't consistent, but the guy working on the game does update it and it is fun. Once story mode and all of the other promised features get into the game it should be really, really good.

Nintendo has been pretty good about having their old games available on things like virtual console, but it's still pretty heartening to see one of these classic editions actually produced by the company which made the first one (not that with Nintendo there would really be another option).

I've bought some old Intellivision compilations/classic consoles, and they never seem to quite get things right. Either the controls are a little off, timing is off, sound is off, they come wrapped in a frustrating interface, or something. Little doubt Nintendo will get this right.

That's tight and worth it just for Techmo Bowl, Punchout, Excite Bike and the Donkey Kong games alone. Got a ton of play out of all of those back in the day.

I did this with one of the new Raspberry Pi 3s and a hard drive. Put it into a small case, and hooked it up to the screens in back seat of the car. On the trip to Big Bend last week, my cousin's sons played it a bunch.

I did, it works really well. My biggest issue was getting the bluetooth dongle and my ps3 remote to cooperate, but it works really well for most games. The pi struggled with stuttering on some games but that was 2 versions ago. I think the new ones are much more capable.

The rather obvious impact of Pokemon Go has me wondering ... has anyone managed to do anything of the sort for console? And if not, how far away is the tech from being able to handle it?

Logistically, let's say instead of using your camera (which obviously wouldn't work as well) it was tied to Google Earth 360 mapping, or something of the sort?
