UPDATE: I *think* this map will auto-update...
http://icons-ecast.wunderground.com/data/images/at201109_sat.jpg
The forecasts continue to move the expected track further up the coast, so I can't help but hope for that to continue. The 11am update is, um, a bit concerning...

yeah seeing a lot of tracks having it right over or next to Myrtle Beach was not fun this morning. Lot of time before it gets here and likely the track will change significantly by then, hopefully for the betterment of all of us living along the coast.

Geez not only do I have to worry about a hurricane, we just had the first earthquake I've ever felt here in Myrtle Beach in 10+ years of living here. Not a big one of course but definitely noticeable for a few seconds.
As for the hurricane, each forecast seems to push it further and further away from the Myrtle Beach area and a more likely landfall in the Outer Banks. Let's hope it keeps pushing further east and misses them too. Right now one of our local weather guys was saying to expect winds in the 30-40 mph range with some rain and surge. I think I can live with that given the earlier predictions.

It needs to move east. Right now they predicting the path to hit NYC as a cat-1 on Sunday. That might be bad.

yeah I saw that-also seems like whenever we've had hurricanes just miss us like this one looks like its going to do, it swerves out over Long Island then up into New England. Last thing NYC needs is a hurricane after they are just recovering from earthquake related nerves.

I don't like any of the projections right now. If it goes on the east tracks I'm getting up to 8 inches of rain. If it goes west track, I get hurricane force winds and tropical storms.
Seems no matter what the track is, I'm right in the middle currently.

Dunno, I guess it depends at what point you want to sound like them? I live in New England and still complain about the snow myself. *shrug* Growing up in Georgia, I fully understand 2 inches of snow shuts Atlanta down more than 6 feet of snow would do to Buffalo.
No reason for people to be dicks to each other unless you really want to try to be one. I personally am hoping that everyone on the east coast get through it without damage or harm this weekend. (and yes, my family lived in Brunswick during Hurricane Hugo in 1989)

It's not the two inches of snow that kills the South, it's the quarter to half inch of ice under it that does us in. But everyone else just sees "an inch of snow".

Souf Cackalacky looks to be spared now. Most of the Lowcountry is under a Tropical Storm Watch, so we should basically be fine here, other than some coastal flooding. Downtown Charleston floods during a good thunderstorm, so we're used to that. Basically the forecast looks like a longer-lasting version of what we might see multiple times in the same week (in shorter bursts) all summer long: thunderstorms and 25-35 mph winds. This is a wide storm, though. I would imagine the area up by Myrtle Beach will get hammered pretty hard.

Low, flat, crowded (except for the easternmost part)--and the only way off is through NYC. If a big category 4 or 5 hurricane were to score a direct hit on the western two thirds of the island, it might be a Katrina-like situation. Cat. 1 would take out beach homes, but not too much else, I think.

I actually haven't checked the local forecast today, yesterday the forecast was calling for winds in the 20-40 mph range, so I'd be surprised if we got the higher winds you mentioned Ben. We finally decided not to put our storm shutters up and just ride it out. (we are about 5-10 mins from the ocean) Quite a difference from the earlier forecasts when we were putting up all the shutters, packing up the more essential/important things and getting the hell out of here. Went to the store today and got storm supplies in case we lose power. But yeah we we should see more of her "fury" than down your way Ben.
Good luck and stay safe to all those more directly in Irene's path.

I'm actually "riding out" the storm on my own. My wife took the kids to Charlotte because she didn't want to have to worry about the stress of being here when it passes through (my oldest daughter is very anxiety-prone and makes much of small things, so the combined stress levels of all involved should improve if they aren't here--even if here isn't really going to get much other than some strong winds and rain).
They just put out the 11 PM advisory and it looks like Irene in the near term will be ramping up a bit, but the forecaster mentions that it may weaken a little before landfall, which is currently projected just west of Morehead City. Bogue Banks is absolutely going to get crushed by this one. None of the other Outer Banks will be doing too well, either, as all of them from Bogue Banks northward will be on the east side of the storm during Irene's passing. There will be some heavy damage, a lot of overwash, and I wouldn't be surprised to see another inlet cut somewhere like what happened with Isabelle several years ago (albeit temporarily as the Army CoE will fill it back in because all the folks with their nice beach homes will still try hard to believe that the Outer Banks are a permanent geographic fixture and not the gigantic sand bars that they actually are).
Around here, we'll be on the periphery of whatever nastiness will be dealt out. Some high winds (maybe pushing towards tropical storm force sustained) and some heavy rain for a few hours Saturday afternoon. If Irene came ashore down towards Wilmington/Myrtle Beach (or if I lived somewhere on the east side of I-95), I'd be a lot more worried about things. As it is, should have a fair number of downed branches to pick up afterwards.

We've got a guy who used to do weather in Lexington and is now in the Ashland/WVa area, I believe, who runs a site called kentuckyweathercenter.com. It's awesome. He updates it every day, gives not just that day's outlook but overal long-term trends/forecasting, etc. During winter the blog is fun as hell, as we try to figure out if we're gonna get snow. Of course, I've been following weather for years going back to when I was in Florida and it was part of my job to care about whether hurricanes were going to hit. Was involved in a bunch of litigation involving insurer hurricane forecasting models.

As the forecast relates to the area in and around Charleston, it basically has been completely unchanged for ~36 hours. The Charleston County School System gave no hint that they might be considering a closing, then at 9:30 last night they decide to close. They said it was based on the 8pm forecast..which was no different from the 5pm forecast...which was no different from the 2pm forecast... Awesome. I agree with their primary reasoning:
1. strong possibility of flooding downtown
2. quite a few school bus routes have to cross Charleston's elevated bridges. Several of those are likely to need to be closed for at least part of the day. But again, the wind speed forecast hasn't changed a bit. This call could easily have been made Thursday morning.
Even better, there's Berkeley County. Part of Berkeley County extends almost all the way to the coast, to basically an island that cannot be accessed apart from one of two huge bridges. Same issue as Charleston County--those suckers will likely need to shut down later today.
So Berkeley County decides to wait unti 8am this morning to decide to do a half-day.

In my experience, only old people watch the weather closely enough to have a favorite forecaster.
I guess it mostly comes from it being critical in my job to know about major whether events and how it may impact navy base closures, etc.
I work for an application that does time and attendance, so many time it is super critical for me to be on top of major weather events and who, what, when, where, and how it may have an impact.

Thus far, about as expected here. Some rain, a fair amount of wind. Pressure is still dropping as the storm hasn't quite reached due east of here, but it shouldn't worsen over what it is now.
However, areas east of I-95 are getting a lot of rain and, of course, the coast and the Outer Banks are getting all the heavy winds on top of that. This will definitely be a rough couple of days for the Northeast upcoming.

Central Va hit hard by winds; rain not so much. 360,000 still without power; as many more in Tidewater.
We had a dozen power blips, then it went it off at 6PM and came back at 8. All our lines are underground and that was the longest hurricane outage we've ever had. Clean-up was nothing but raking and toting one branch. My neighbor had a tree come down and clip his garage. He's 3-for-3 in hurricanes always knocking a tree onto house in this century.

Yeah, I've seen that page. I suppose it's useful if you know exactly where the source of your outage is, but I do not. There are multiple roads somewhat close to us that have multiple downed power polls. I have no idea which ones actually impact our neighborhood, and apparently Dominion doesn't either.
Honestly, it's not a HUGE deal to me. I'm more interested in the process than freaking out about not having power. The most bothersome part at this point is the crappy generator next door keeping my wife up all night.

Rumor on our neighborhood's facebook page is that they may be out of Transformers and work is going to be delayed a day or two from what was planned to get more sent this way.
Following all of this is oddly entertaining for me. Especially the people going crazy on facebook.

According to CL&P's site, 98% of my town is still without power. Yay.

Here in Chesterfield County many folks are having the same "work has been completed" message and not having any juice.
Funniest hard luck story happened to a co-worker. She made it through the storm without losing any power. Then yesterday before lunch, her daughter called and said, "The guy up the street decided to cut down a tree that was leaning. It fell on the power line, pulled it down and now we're out."
Last night she got the "work has been completed message" but there was no power. She walked out to the road and saw the line still down in the middle of the street.

Deserves a spot on the Punch in the face list.

Much like you'd poison a loud barking dog, I think it's in your best interest to sneak next door and sabatogue that generator in the near future.
(I kid about poisoning the dog, of course)

Dear god. Supposedly, the estimate for us to get power back is September 7th. Most of my coworkers already have power, or never lost it.

That's a bummer. Happened to my parents after Ike- they were without power for over 2 weeks. Unfortunately, if most of your neighbors are on, that's even worse for you, not better.
It's a stupid pet peeve of mine but it always annoys me when people are like "why did they get power before me". The power company did not single you out but since only 6 people on your street are out while an entire city block of 50 across town are out, I hope they go get the 50.
I'm sure it's like anything else where if Inverse_Time_of_Repair_Area1 * Number_Impacted_Area1 > Inverse_Time_of_Repair_Area2 * Number_Impacted_Area2, then they'll go fix Area1 because they're trying to do the most good for the most number of people. Or, from a more cynical point of view, the more people they fix more quickly means less complaining at them.

Yep. It all makes sense. But sucks if you're in a low-priority area.
