Seriously, youīve got to listen to that. Thank God that Libyas post as "leader" of the UN general assembly isnīt associated with any power or anything (itīs more like a master of ceremonies, which changes between all members) so that we can just observe and decide between outrage and laughter, both would be appropriate.

Damn, heīd make a hell of a subject for a psychology paper ...

The guy actually proposed to whipe out Switzerland a couple weeks back. And nope, no joke here. He brought in an actual proposal to split Switzerland and give it to neighbouring countries, dindīt make it onto the list for the assembly though.
His son got held prisoner last year over beating a maid at a hoter in Switzerland, since then Gaddafi has been on a mission against Switzerland (holding diplomats prisoner and stuff).

Anyway, this evening he held a speech in New York just like a lot of members of the General Assembly of the UN. Normally a 15-30 speech where the state leader talk about a couple subjects they find important regarding the UN in the future. Not quite so for MR Gaddafi who talked for 96 minutes (just saw hilarious clips on CNN showing like 2/3 of the attendents walk out and quite a few others falling asleep) and his range of topics included (and thereīs more !) :

- Why canīt the Taliban have their own country, how is that different than the Vatican ?
- He said Libya did not accept, acknowledge or recognise the UN charter and criticised the make-up of the Security Council
- The death of Martin Luther King should be looked into again, the african people deserve to know who it really was
- The death of JFK should be looked into again, the Israelis are to blame really
- Complaining of jet lag, he suggested the general assembly be relocated somewhere more "comfortable," and insisted that the suggestion was not a sleight against the US, but instead would "relieve" the country of having to "suffer" providing security and maintenance to the UN.
- Gaddafi also demanded $7.7 trillion from the West, "in the name of 1,000 African kingdoms," for the colonization of Africa. "7.77 trillion dollars -- that is the compensation the Africans deserve from the countries that colonized Africa," Gaddafi said.

:D

in all seriousness : Hats off to the town of Bedford, they went ahead and dismantled the tent.

Totally forgot to mention that he also called swine-flu a conspiracy and a chemical weapon developed in some "capitalist countries" laboratory to benefit the pharmaceutical industry.

Qaddafi’s First U.N. Speech Is a Rambling Diatribe - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/world/24nations.html?em)

It was meant to be a day of global reconciliation, when the new leader of the free world put all the rancour of the past eight years behind him and heralded an era of unity. And so it might have been were it not for a short man, swathed in saffron robes and a black felt hat waving his arms around and shouting: "Terrorism!"

Muammar Gaddafi (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/muammar-gaddafi) - for it was he - grabbed his 15 minutes of fame at the UN building in New York today and ran with it. He ran with it so hard he stretched it to an hour and 40 minutes, six times longer than his allotted slot, to the dismay of UN organisers.

another good one : li Abdussalam Treki, the Libyan diplomat who now holds the rotating presidency of the General Assembly, introduced him as the “leader of the revolution, president of the African Union (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/a/african_union/index.html?inline=nyt-org), King of Kings of Africa.”

This just made me miss the last 15 years or so when we had just been ignoring this guy instead of him reminding us how crazy he is.

I applaud the UN for booking a comedy act in the middle of all the speeches. Helps lighten the mood.

Heard on NPR last night that apparently after the first hour or so his UN translator gave up in exhaustion and another UN employee had to take over.

Good stuff. :D
