I saw this over at Blues News a new Ice HOCKEY TEXT BASED SIM GM Hockey 2009. Has anyone heard about this before. I guess there is a demo or a trial of 25 times playing the fullversion so people interested can check it out. The developer or the guy at least who made the site has some "interesting" ways to describe the game. It could be good or the ice hockey version of maximum football:eek: In anycase links below and it is $30 with a trial like I mentioned.

Wow, a lot of interesting features. From looking at and reading about the screenshots, this sounds like it would be a really fun game if executed well.
Looks really interesting and i'm in full hockey fever thanks to NHL09, will give the demo a try.

The freeware? It's pretty damn fast, you can go through a season in like 4 hours. Just turn on manually updated stats, turn off computer team news and turn on news reset monthly.

Eh... This actually makes me want to play it more.So the developer is a militant Quebecoius. I'll play it hoping to see Western New York break off from the rotten downstate area and become rich selling hydropower and keeping all the profits. Sigh...dreams...But its the translations that are killing me.

Wow, I don't know... the translation may be rough, but aren't you all intrigued by this game? Whether it is viable long-term, with prospect development and whether the AI is worth a damn is something to take a look at for sure... seems like eveything is tweakable... I guess we need a patient soul to run this through some tests and see if it has potential... at the least, it does deserve a sniff or two...
Anyway have insights on the game? Especially the development of players and the AI's ability to draft/trade/sign players both in the short and long term...

From a personnal point of view, I played the french version a few years ago and wasn't overly impressed; the good stuff is lost among a ton of useless features, and the engine was far from perfect. There were some good ideas, but it seems like the developper had a hard time figuring out what was good, and what should be left out.
I'm sticking to EHM.

I played through 9 games of the regular season. So far results seem realistic. The game has some fun ideas and I actually like the idea that personalities die, and the little extra random things that a lot of people might find silly or not like. The fantasy hockey aspect was a fun thing that it would be interesting if other games added.
What I don't like most so far is not being able to sim a period of time or be able to have the computer pick for me or at least see a list of players by an overall rating in the initial player dispersal draft. I also don't like that I can't automate any of the strategies/features for my team.

Another gripe. You always have to keep the minimum position requirement on your roster. If a player gets hurt (even if it's only for 2 games) you have to call up someone else. Then if that injury puts you under say 4 centers, the player called up either needs to be a center or you need to convert a player with a possible ratings loss. You can't just have someone fill in for a game or two at another position.
Also to note, while I don't mind, you don't play out your games. You get a period by period update and then towards the end of the game it always has a scoring chance or two listed and whether or not the goal was scored. There is no user action inside of a game.

The newspaper feature is really nice. Along with little updates and small touches to make the interactions feel real. The game actually integrates past events into its news and analysis.
The visual/graph displays of player progression for stats/attributes and the bar graph depth chart are also nice.

Overview of GM desk
I just noticed the finance stuff in GM desk. You set prices for everything (tickets, beer, popcorn, hotdog, etc) and it shows you where you rank in the league. It allows you to pick sponsors, and select a television contract. You have to reach a certain market share from your television contract or you lose money. It also had a couple nice graphs for attendance and tv market share.
There is a matchups screen which shows your record and you matchup with every other team in the league.
There is a GM Desk which shows your popularity, influence, respect, ability to negotiate. It also allows you to ask a favor of Fat Tony (potential sabotage against another team) or allows you to blame or congratulate a coach or player in the newspaper. There is another screen which shows the presidents, fans and players faith in you.
Other screens in this in this category are GM History and GM records. The records includes TONS of records both for players playing for you while you are GM and your performance.
The last screen here is the GM pool which I mentioned before. This is the fantasy league. You draft a team of fantasy players from various teams across the league and compete in this pool with all the other GM's. There is bonuses for finishing in one of the top 3 spots such as "respect attribute raised to the max".
Here's one interesting random event that just happened as an example. Yesterday, one of my lesser forwards was robbed and his juniors trophies were stolen so that affected his mood. I think the random events are cool, but there is a slider if you don't like them. It also allows you to purchase additional seats and make upgrades
Danny

In the archives there is history for the draft, awards, full transactions including trades, signings and waivers, records book and referee results.
The options includes tons of option for the AI and almost every other aspect other than automating tasks.
There is also full World Championships though I haven't gone through that yet, so all those options are grayed out.

This would be a deal breaker for me, I hate having to micro manage my lineup in a game.

Game is pretty challenging so far. A lot of things I like, I just wish I could automate tasks and sim more than one day at a time. Those two things might be deal breakers for me in not buying the game.

Yeah, I posted right after you about the issues I found likely being deal breakers for me too. I'll probably take the time to post the issues on the forums as like I said, there is a lot I like so far. Just let me automate things like this and sim more than one game at a time and I would likely make the purchase. Still playing though, I'm about 25 games into the season, I want to least get through one, so I can experience all they have in here.
Danny
10-11-2008, 08:18 PM
The one good thing about the issue Lathum replied about is at least the game prompts you and makes it easy to make the switch. when a player gets hurt a popup window comes up asking specifically who you want to call up for him. Then when the player comes back, a popup comes up asking if you want to put him back in the lineup and for whom or send him down to the minors. At least you don't have to wonder or go looking around to fix your roster.

My captian Joe Thornton just asked to meet with me. He told me if I could trade for his best friend J. Gorges and if I did, he would be a happy man. I now have 5 turns to trade for this guy, if I do Thornton gets a boost to his inspirtation which effect willingness to negotiate, performance, etc... if I fail he will become frustrated.

Just had the mid-season press conference and they actually asked me appropriate questions like is so and so really on the trading block (a guy I put on there), what is the reason for your offensive struggles. They even asked why my scouts were sitting at home for much of the first half of the season (I forgot to scout for a period of about 20 games). They mentioned that some of my players have complained about having to wear ties (I set dress code to ties). A bunch of other questions were asked, This was a neat feature.

Trade AI seems very good so far. I made quite a few trades as my team was not constructed well since I rushed through the dispersal draft. I'm not sure I got the better end of any deal, but it was possible to get some solid young players if I gave up something good in return. I picked up LW Upshall, RW Dustin Brown, D Meszaros, D J Gorges, and D B Coburn. However, to get these players I had to give up S Sullivan, Visnovsky, Brisebois, Boynton, Raycroft, Korulyouk, Moulson, Schultz and my 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.
Signings and the draft I haven't gone through yet; however, there is no player who has been released or placed on waivers that wouldn't be in the NHL. And there is very little quality in free agency during the season, so the AI seems good here.

Galaril
10-12-2008, 10:28 AM
Sounds promising. If the developer can "fix" the few issues. I think the big three are roster setup as mentioned already forced you to stick to for example 4 centers when one gets injuried is a big one. Also, the abiltiy to be able to sim more than one game and I would purchase as well. I think these are fairly easy fixes considering the fact the game already has a ton of stuff in it.

A good sign for the game is I was left wanting more when the game told me the demo went as far as it could. I finished some of my homework today and wanted to boot the game back up and continue on my franchise. I also appreciate the response I got when I posted on their forum A Couple Issues (http://logiqueeclectic.fr-bb.com/questions-answers-f5/a-couple-issues-t585.htm#12803)
The developer responded to my critiques well. He explained the intentions for doing what he did and said he would see what he could do for future regarding the issues I mentioned. As I said there, I am actually leaning towards getting this game in the future as I've been wanting an enjoyable hockey sim since the original EHM as I never enjoyed the new versions of EHM.

If Danny makes the purchase, he's your guy as he's already at the AS break and hopefully can tell us what the offseason is like.
So far, nothing has jumped out at me as unrealistic.. but it's early in my game play. I will say, if I'm still having as much fun when the demo is up as I have the last hour or so, it will be a purchase for me.

If anything, it brings a lot of innovation and fun to the text sim genre. Picking my players for my fantasy team was fun and something I'm going to like watching parallel with my season.
Tried to pick up Shanahan and he told me he has no confidence in me.. lol..
Lots of really cool things that bring the universe to life.

I completely agree. The game has lots of potential, but there are a few annoyances that need to be addressed. I'll list a few.
1. The game should not constantly force the player to stay above the minimum salary cap when a player gets injured. This can be a problem if a team has a lot of players on 1 year deals since you can't offer a salary raise during the last year of a players contract.
2. The game could use a regular front end with an advance day button. It was real confusing starting out because the game didn't tell you how to advance.
3. Is there a way to claim a player off of waivers?
Overall, the game seems pretty fun. I will definately put this one on my "games to keep an eye on" list.

It's different, but I wouldn't say it's different bad. If you are looking for a pure sports simulation it's not that.
At the very least the Waiver AI is good, every player I tried to claim on cutdown day was claimed by someone higher in the order then I was.
The one thing that I either can't figure out or is frustrating as hell is that other then the depth chart screen is there any way to see an individual players potential?
One huge gripe: scouting for the draft is an absolute miserable clickfest. They scout individual players and you have to pick each player they scout, there doesn't seem to be enough time to scout all so it seems you need to scout around the projected slots in the draft where you are going to select. Just horrid.

I like the fact that you can only scout a limited number of players and have to pick and choose. This adds some strategy. The problem is having to do this one a time and keep choosing over and over. If everything worked the same, but we were able to queue a list of players for each scout that would be much better.

Funny thing with the sound. When it's simulating the games, the crowd noise is from a basketball game. You can hear the PA say after the first quarter the Nets lead 25-21. Then he announces a fan shoot to win contest.

How are future drafts? Care to do a little report on that, as this is one part that I consider very important in the game.
Danny
10-20-2008, 07:24 PM
The draft is good. A very good mix of prospects. At the top you'll get some studs though they don't always develop as you would like them to. In the middle you'll get some potential, but most players taken out of the first round or two will not make it based on what I am seeing. Still, some develop better than you'd hope. For my team, I have drafted in the top 4 each season, including first twice (won the lottery one time to move up two spots and another time traded up. I've already had a high second rounder bust. Overall, the AI and players coming out seem realistic and some thing are adjustable about it as well such as how many great players and whether potential is based on current ratings (turn it off if you want more randomness, I have mine on).
You don't get attributes for the players when you scout them. You get their interview, written performance, talent level, performance (during the time you scouted them) feeling (scouts gut feeling about them) and other or two others. I like this, though one thing I would like to see added is simply a category for type of player they are.
Danny
10-20-2008, 07:29 PM
The free agent signing period is great. One of my favorite parts of the game. What I really like is you can only submit three offers per round, this really adds a ton of strategy. Also, once again, the AI has been good here. The fact that certain players are not willing to negotiate with you also adds a level of difficulty. And this isn't random, there is a reason players are unwilling to negotiate, like for example, you traded them away 3 seasons ago :).

there are World Championships and minors other than the NHL. Honestly, I've skipped running a team in the worlds thus far because I was only offered the job of a really poor team (my record with the Kings is really bad) and wanted to wait for a better opportunity before accepting.

I bought the game this weekend. played 1 full season yesterday. I was actually digging it. the guy put a lot of historical things in the database. There are some cheesy elements but I was totally digging the whole progression of my season.
one mistake that made me retire after the first year was that i renegotiated Zet's contract and thought if i offered 15 million for 4 years, it would be 5.3 a year. well, that's not the case, lol. i had him at 15 million a year and that screwed my budget royally.
I dont like how some menus don't let you see more than you do. um...moving players up and down is a pain because you have to keep clicking view card to see what their contract terms are (for keeping your team roster under budget). There were some other annoyances but overall, it's a fun game. i hope he continues to work on it. I would love to see an update soon. Maybe a retool of the translations? lol.

one mistake that made me retire after the first year was that i renegotiated Zet's contract and thought if i offered 15 million for 4 years, it would be 5.3 a year. well, that's not the case, lol. i had him at 15 million a year and that screwed my budget royally.
Maybe a retool of the translations? lol.
Very interesting and thanks for posting - I've been on the fence about this game - after I finish with WarhammerOnline. I definitely would have thought 5.3M a season as well.

well, i wouldn't base your decision on my math. haha. 5.3 or 3.75. whatever. I can't really remember what the initial contract was for.
I do know that it does show something different in FA signing mode. menu that shows '9.0/3' or something like that.

Funny...I didn't actually do the math...maybe too much wine at the time.
I'm in my 6th season and am getting a runtime error that is a game stopper.Anyone else have problems?
Do they have an english forum...i can;t find one?

Anybody have issues making money?
My stadium is 95% or better in terms of capacity. I'm getting a 7+ % in tv market share but I'm about 8 million under the cap.
The finance screen doesn't show any income for concessions. Zeros all the way down the list.

never mind the zeros in the column. they were updated after the next match. Still, I'm around 8 million under.
is there a way to make more money or do i need to shave salaries by cut or trade?

Now that I have 2 weeks off, I'm going to play the heck out of this game.. played for about 4 hours straight this morning and I'm really impressed at the detail in the game.
If the developer implements some of the suggestions in the forum to make it a bit easier to navigate and simplier to find the data you are looking for, this could stay in my rotation for a long time.
The game as it is right now is quite engrossing!

Thanks for posting the promo video and discount. I was thinking about looking at this game after I finish King's Bounty.
I like the game, lots of GM options, but found the games sim (jumbotron screen) a bit weird and hard to follow, i would prefer just a quick sim option (and couldn't find it). Also i would the current/potential bars in deep chart screen to be horizontal like in the 99% of text sims, instead of vertical.

I don't really mind the jumbotron screen.. but I'm always wishing on something like EHM, ie a 2d display. :)
The game has been a lot of fun though.
Don't forget the photo pack and updated database.

I played it quite a while today. It has a lot of nice things going for it. I like the newspaper (even the classifieds that sometimes don't make sense in english) and the GM Pool fantasy game.
Sorting through players is a pain, you have to open each player card then close it and go to the next. Lots of clicking. So cut down day took a while, as well as searching for a free agent RW.
Like Icy, I wish it had a quick sim option. The Jumbotron is kinda neat the first time, but it doesn't give much play by play and ends up just taking a lot of time to get through the games. It would be nice to sim a week or so as well.
I still have 23 more launches on the demo. I don't know if I would buy it right now or not, but I need to make up my mind before the sale is over for sure.

Just downloaded the demo yesterday and will give it an extensive run on the weekend to make up my mind whether or not to buy it. Normally i know i shouldnīt with that terrible combination of lack of time, unfinished business in other sims (still playing DDSPB a lot, play FBCB again recently, FM 09 is waiting to get serious, heck i even fired up Bowl Bound recently again ...) in me in general not even being a hockey fan... Itīs not like i donīt like to watch it occasionally, but iīm not following it in any sort.
However i really enjoyed the original EHM back in the day and played one of SIs versions a lot too and have allways been compelled by the roster building and talent developing ways of hockey (drafting players and then seeing if they develop and then bring them over and then put them in minor leagues or play them immediately).
Plus this "nonchalant" but indepth way of the game is really appealing to me, thereīs nothing wrong with having a few gimmicks and a little fun in a sim as long as the sim is working.
In Germany there was a hugely succesfull soccer manager series about 10-15 years back named "Anstoss" that was a great sim that had a great lasting appeal (up until Anstoss 3 anyway) but also never shied away from some innocent fun and some hilarious events taking place occassionally like f.e. a really pissed of player burning a clubīs banner on the towns market place, or during a match you get a text message that some fans are showing a banner protesting against the quality of you stadium food.
And what iīve seen so far is similar here in a way, love it.

They are working on cleaning up the english version and I believe if you buy 2009, version 2010 is free.

Yup, good call, in fact i see they are also looking for English translators to improve it, and getting next evrsion for free is a good selling point.

I a couple of you guys had some pretty good feedback and suggestions but I don't see any of them unless they were already added. For me the big turnoff was the genric minors. I would of liked it to be alittle more options in the minors like EHM had.

I have a major issue with teams up in the third period adding 4 or 5 goals to their total as the game ends.
I've had numerous 3-2 games end 7-2 or 8-3. Its a bit much.

That is the only thing i miss in this game. What i love from ehm is to draft players, send them to farm teams or let them play in Europe etc, follow their development, and call them up when needed. With just a generic minor team, you miss all those fun management options.

I'm a big fan of sims that are straight forward and not overly complex.. what can I say.. FBCB, BM 09, FOF and this hockey game.
I love the "turn" based style of the game, the newspaper you get after each game, etc.. you can get as deep as you want or take a wait and see approach to this game as you learn how things work.
My Blues are in the hunt for the playoffs and it's exciting when one of my young guns go on a tear or I bring up a young tough guy who makes BigDeal Ramon's list of tough guys. :)
The game has a few odds and ends, but it's become one of my favorites.

I guess that would depend on what you are looking for.
This game is fun and keeps u busy while simming through seasons at a decent pace. Its not as deep as EHM if you are looking for something more in depth. I prefer this game mostly because EHM is out of date now and the little added stuff in this game like fantasy drafts and interviews.

I go back to this every now and then but the game by game tedium is getting to me. I want to sim 4-5 games at a time, sometimes more if I know where the team is going or I'm happy with my lineup.

That is my only issue with it and why i stopped to play it. I don't like at all the game sim screen, it's not pbp until the last second of the game where you see a breakaway or goal chance and it can be a goal or miss. it could be exciting once, but not on every sim.
As you can't avoid it, it became really annoying for me. I would prefer or a full pbp or just a box score and quick sim.
