View Full Version : OT - 2 years work & Syracuse gets ...

... "Orange".
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=1799808
I don't know what strikes me as being more incredibly stupid.
1) Two years work & what they come up with is ... "Orange".
2) This quote -- "We are the only school in the country that has orange as its official color. We want to accentuate that fact," director of athletics Jake Crouthamel said Tuesday at a press conference."
He noted that Texas and Tennessee have a substantial amount of white to go with the orange in their uniforms.
Okay, so .... since there's another color involved, then the orange in either UT or Clemson, or any of the others just ceases to exist, leaving Syracuse as "the only school in the country that has orange as its official color"?
How about inserting the word "only" in front "orange" there buddy boy? And even if it is technically grammatically correct, I'd really hope he realized how stupid his choice of phrasing sounds.

How exactly is Syracuse "the only school in the country that has orange as its official color" any moreso than any other school like Tennessee or Texas considering that Syracuse uses orange and blue in their uniforms?
And beware Nike - they created the uniform monstrosities at Oregon and pussified the Huskies, going to a grape-colored purple instead of the old dark purple and creating a Husky logo that looks more like a weasel with a Nike swoosh built-in.

The Afoci.
Sadly, that is only in the homosexual pronunciation.

Its more than two years work. When I was there (from 91 to 97) they were discussing changing the nickname. Coach Pasqualoni (why is the syllable pronounced 'pass' in his name?) wanted us to be the WolfPack. The school even paid to have a logo designed involving a wolf.

What a dumb ass remark about being the only school to have orange as it's official color. To then even point out "well they also use a lot of white," and ignoring your own navy blue is just bizarre.

It probably will save them money somehow. Stupid though, I thought their uniforms were decent. I'm sure Nike will find a way to destroy them like they did with others.

So, uh, was Orangemen somehow racist to the orange skinned people of Zarlaxia 3 or was there some actual reason why the name didn't work?

Well the mascot used to be the Saltine Warrior (we're the salt city, and he was an Indian. Orange man = indian so I guess that's where the roots of the nickname come from).
It's a waste of money. They're still pissed we revolted against the stupid Wolf. They're doing everything in their power to distract people from the inepitutude of the athletic department.

Umm, no. The teams were referred to as the "Orange Men" long before the Saltine Warrior. Basically, they chose orange as their uniform colors because no other team in the east wore it. Some local scribe referred to them as the Orange Men in reference to their uniform colors and it became an unofficial, later to be official, nickname. It was much later that teams started having mascots, when someone decided to be the Saltine Warrior, in combined homage to the two dual histories of the area.

I thought the effort to find a new nickname/mascot died long ago, after the aforementioned revolt against the wolf. I cannot believe they have continued to waste time and money on this effort, and that it produced this.

I didn't even know they were thinking of changing stuff til the report came out 2 days ago.
Orange Man = Indian. Way back when, there were a lot of Indians here. That is why the Saltine Warrior was created, because he was Indian and showed the link between the nickname and the area. (I can't find anything online about the origin of the name but I guess either story is plausible).

Hmm...I thought Orangemen had some connection to colonial times with the Dutch and such (there was a Fort Orange where Albany is now, for example). Regardless, to be known as "The Orange" is such a silly thing. Harvard Crimson works. Syracuse Orange makes it sound like they've got a new genetic hybrid fruit that can grow in western New York.

Syracuse University also has Methodist roots... which lends yet another plausible explanation for the origins of the orange/orangemen usage.
At least they didn't stick with rose pink and pea green, their original colors.

I grew up in Syracuse and have been a big fan for years. I assure you, I know the local history.
Calling the SU teams the Orange Men began in local newspapers in the late 19th century. The color Orange was officially adopted as the school color in 1890. A mascot dressed in Native American dress referred to as The Saltine Warrior did not appear on SU's sidelines until the 50s.
The term orange and the saltine warrior were largely unrelated, and the color never referred to the color of native american's skin, instead, his name was Bill Orange.

I grew up there too but I have no idea where the "Orangemen" originated and as I said, I couldn't find any websites talking about the history. I always wondered when the Saltine Warrior came to be. He's so much cooler than that stupid puffball we have now.

Otto the Mascot
In 1995, after the traditions committee recommended changing the mascot to a wolf, students petitioned the chancellor to keep the Orange the official mascot. On Dec. 4, 1995, the Orange became the University's official mascot thanks to a proclamation by Chancellor Kenneth Shaw. "Though some might say we sacrificed a more powerful image with this decision, I believe that, with the orange, we retain a unique position in college athletics", Shaw said. In May of 1997, students, alumni, faculty and staff, voted to retain the original drawing of Otto as the official representation.
Nicknamed Bill Orange, the original mascot, an Indian warrior, of the University got its name from Syracuse being the salt city and because Syracuse is the home of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. Still located on the Quad, the statue of the Saltine Warrior, a gift of the class of 1951, was sculpted by Louise Harriet Meyers. The warrior stayed as the mascot until 1978 when American Indian students complained that the mascot was offensive. For a time, a Roman Gladiator served as the mascot and students even proposed the Abominable Orangeman, an orangutan and Egnaro the Troll as new mascots....

Okay, I just got around to reading the entire article, and it's clear to me that this was about far more than the color. It was about unifying the identity of the different teams. So instead of "Orangemen" and "Oragewomen" they are just the "Orange", but more importantly all the teams are now using the same logo instead of each team having its own logo.
That's a bigger deal than just the "orange as official color" this thread started out as.

It's still a lame reason. They couldn't use the same logo before?
Jake is a tard and I pray the new chancellor will boot his old ass out the door as her 1st decision.

So that's why Syracuse got beat 24-7 in New Brunswick last year. I thought it was because Pasqualoni can't recruit.
