So, I was sitting back trying to load up an old game of mine (Talonsoft's Westfront) on my relatively new laptop. Westfront was a game I used to play on my desktop a few years ago. Anyways, the box says the requirements are Windows 95 or 98, and it ran fine on the desktop which had Windows 98.

Well, it loads fine on the laptop, and I managed to transfer my saved game files too. And even when I run the game, initially everything is fine and the main menu comes up where you select options, etc. However, when I go to play a game, a message pops up and says "sorry, not supported on Windows NT" and then kicks me out of the game.

First off, I have Windows XP on my laptop, so I am not sure why NT pops up on the message. But my main question is there anyway to make this run on XP? In other words, are there some tricks or commands that can be inputted to make it work, or am I screwed? Any help from you techies out there would be much appreciated.

You know, I have been more pissed at XP rather than thankful. I have never seen it do anything new for me from Windows 98 other than have a bunch of automatic settings and so called shortcuts that I don't want. If it means I can't load up old games now and then, I think it's total BS that Microsoft can't make it compatible with older stuff.

Front Page Sports BBPro 98 doesn't run on anything above Win98 so a sim league I'm in is stuck running on machines with Windows 98 or 95.

I sent a message to tech support at Sierra asking them if it would run on Win2K or XP and they said there was no way to make it run on either. That may be your first step.

right click on your shortcut for the game, and go to the compatability tab. Try windows 98 first, and work through until you find a combo that works. Not all games will wind up working, but a large majority of them do. Also, the reason why you get the "NT blah blah" message is because XP is built on the NT kernel, and any old game will see it as that, because it doesn't know what XP is.

Thanks, Tasan. Your fix sounded just like what I needed, but alas it still didn't work. Sterling, I will email Talonsoft (if they are still around) and see what happens.

Go to www.theblitz.org and search their message boards under "campaign series". This is a wargaming club that I belong to that has a strong campaign series ladder. You should be able to find the info you need their as others have had similar problems. If you can't find an answer that works register for the board and post a question describing your problem I'm sure someone there will be able to help. I think your chances of getting an answer from Talon Suck er.. Soft are about nil.

Not sure why but not everyone has these troubles with xp and the CS games. I installed my West Front and East Front games without any problems on my xp machine.

Hey, thank you all for the help. I got it working. The key was downloading the latest patch 1.05 from theblitz.org. With that and changing the XP compatibility for each executable file in the westfront folder, it worked. Yippeee!
