View Full Version : OT - Fantasy preseason football?

Okay, I confess - I am a fantasy sports junkie (though I don't much care for the "fantasy" term, but that's another matter). I have created fantasy style games for any number of diffrent events... including minor league baseball games (in person), the summer and winter olympics, college basketball, you name it.
A friend and I are working on doing some sort of fantasy preseason game. It would be pretty simple - no draft, no trading, no lineups -- just submit a roster, and accumulate points based on how well those players do in the total preseason, using standard scoring methods.
I'm interested to know:
-Does anyone have any thoughts on how to set something like this up?
-Does anyone have any insights in to the type of player who makes a good pick for this sort of thing?
-Does anyone have interest in setting up such a league here at FOFC? (I suspect it'd be very low-maintenance)

Well, the 2nd stringers and 3rd stringers battling for a roster spot always make tackles or receptions. Right?

I'm not sure what you are asking for here, Quick? Why not just score it like regular Fantasy Football, only concentrate on carries, receptions, blocks, etc.

Rookies and very good backups :D.

An interesting aspect to this game is that I think it would be harder to dig for the right information. You can go to FF sites or just ESPN.com during the season and get a good bead on who will be playing in the regular season and how much, etc. One good FF magazine can probably get you through your draft OK.
This game, however, may require more digging. It will be hard to know which wide receivers the coaches want to see play more for the Titans without going to the local Nashville newspaper, Titans messageboards, etc. Times that by 32 teams, and you have a bit of work cut out for you.
FWIW, My 2c is that the Saints' coaches are going to ease Brooks back from his shoulder injury as gently as possible. Consider that with the fact that Todd Bouman (sp?) is new to the system and needs lots of reps, and the Saints drafted 2 raw speed demon WRs late that they will want to examine, and I would say that Saints backup QB Todd Bouman is probably the first player that I would pick from the Saints.

QS,
Do you have a college football game? I've been toying with ideas - but it's hard to find enough people to play IRL.

LionKing--
What's your reasoning behind these picks?
I am not disagreeing; I am just curious.
Who is Jason McAddley?

Young WR. He's a decent sized WR who can make plays downfield. I agree, he could be a good one to have in a preseason league. (he's a DEEP sleeper in a normal fantasy football league this year)
My picks, off hand:
QB: Todd Bouman, Brian Griese
RB: Michael Wiley, Quenton Griffith
WR: Tyrone Calico, Reche Caldwell
TE: Jeb Putzier, Daniel Graham

One of those guys (McAddley, Bryan Gilmore, Bryant Johnson and Anquan Boldin) are going to need to step it up. Otherwise Arizon might have the worst offense in recent history. McAddley looked decent when Sanders, Boston and Jenkins were all injured last season. Now, with all of them gone, he'll get another chance to shine. Maybe not going into camp, but by the start of the season, McAddley should be starting for the Cardinals....

Interesting idea.... The key would be picking backups that are trying to prove themselves....

I call the token Mexican guy playing 8th string WR for the Cowboys or their opponent at the Mexico City game...

That's a pretty good pick, and I don't say this because it's SF and I'm a 49er...it's because he IS Mr Pre-Season in terms of playing time with the Niners since the year 2000.
And this year, he should be even more...
What would be curious to see is how things are handled as the preseason progresses. After the first couple games, starters begin playing more and by the last preseason game you have starters in some games for almost the entire game. The turnover on a fantasy team would most likely be significant. Could be a lot of work to handle that much turnover in such a short time unless you have a computer program to handle it.
I would guess the best strategy would be to start with backups who will be getting lots of playing time. After the first couple games, I'd turnover the entire team and pick up a team made up of part time players, young starters learning new systems and players fighting for a starting spot. Before the last game, I'd turnover again and take starters (especially ones in a new system who might get playing time into the 3rd and 4th quarters).

My general thinking is that you keep it very simple. People pick a team (somethig like what TLK did above) and then we just score it from there-- no trading, no waivers, no weekly lineups, etc. Just pick your team in advance, and after four weeks of real play, you see how many points you have.
I think it would be a bit of a pain to do the scoring (especially now that we're so used to haveing fantasy leagues auto-scored by computer services) but if each person did it, that would be fine.
My thinking is that you don't need to have a draft or anything complicated - just allow anyone who wants to play to submit a lineup (either publicly or privately) before the first real week of the preseason, and go from there. Simple, no mess, no fuss.

Why not? Sounds like fun. With the luck I had last year in my fantasy leagues, it might do me good to get destroyed in preseason and get it out of the way. :)

I'd be interested in something like this. I think private submissions of rosters would be best.

I'd be interested, but because we are scoring ourselves, I would prefer a smaller roster. At the same time, the format allows people to do things that they cannot do normally--like pick 2 QBs. What about this for a roster:
2 QB
2 RB
2 WR
1 TE
1 Def.
I'm just throwing that out. 8 sets of stats seem easy enough to manage. Other ideas?
Also--ideas about a scoring system?
(Note--I would offer to set things up, but I am changing jobs and moving cities between July 18th and August 4th, and I cannot promise to be here for stuff. If, however, no one else wants to run it, I'll go ahead and do it, if people can handle my potential unavailability.)
dola.....
I volunteer to do the scoring, but I'd prefer to just keep it on here, instead of coming up with a webpage and all that...

Kickers have something to proove as well, if there are players to be cut at the season start, good backup kickers are the last to go out.
Some teams will have serious battles during training camp and maybe preseason.
Another thing to keep in mind:
NFL Europe 2002 players will not be likely to be released before the season starts due to the NFLEL excempt rule. After the first cutting day during the preseason, team are allowed to have additional roster spots for the NFLEL "veterans".

I was thinking the same thing..... maybe get rid of the Def Team?......Off the top of my head, these teams should be having battles for the kicking job.....

My friend and I are planning to go with an even more simplified system, similar to one that we have used for years with the NFL playoffs (where we have had a great fantasy competition each year for about a decade).
We'll allow each manager to select:
1QB
1 kicker
1 defense
and 7 or 8 "skill position players" - any combination of RB, WR, TE
For the playoffs, this works pretty well, because we have used an auction to distribute players (and lumping RB/WR/TE together avoids having too many of the "only one guy left" situations). Our leaning is to use it here, also.
But I'm open to using a more traditional system here at FOFC, as it seems like there is interest in doing this.
Still any interest in this?....

I'm definitely interested. I say we just take Quik's playoff system and go as-is.
