Despite Flaws, NCAA 09 a Great Experience

Sometimes, you play a game and it just feels right. While there may be a few annoying bugs and a few quirks about a game, it still doesn't diminish your overall opinion of that game.

I felt this once already this year with MLB '08: The Show. I have seen more strange little bugs and have had a few fairly "out of this world" experiences with that game. But I also truly believe it is this year’s best sports game to date.

As a writer and reviewer of some titles, I cannot take the promise of a future patch into consideration when issuing a score on a game, just like the NFL could not hand the Patriots the Lombardi trophy just because they were favored to win. However, I can say that when the time comes for the end of the year awards, a patched NCAA Football 09 on my little PS3 could be in the running for the Game of the Year.

Most of the issues out of the box can be band-aided with a right set of slider settings, but it's hard to discount the game favors the offense heavily right out of the box.

As it stands right now, NCAA Football 09 is a game which is extremely fun to play and as such warrants a high review score. While there is just enough wrong with the gameplay out of the box to hold it back from receiving a 9 or higher, I would give it a score some where just below that mark if I were the one reviewing the game.

Most of the issues out of the box can be band-aided with a right set of slider settings, but it's hard to discount the game favors the offense heavily right out of the box.

I am already almost finished with year two of my dynasty, and I have only had the game for two days. Even though I am getting older (in my early 20s), I cannot remember playing that much NCAA just after its release.

Overall, the Playstation 3 version of the game runs similar to its counterpart on the 360 and looks very similar as well. I would bet both versions with an HDMI output into my 42" TV would look rather similar if they were running side by side. As with most sports games, the choice on which console you want to play on simply rests on which online service you prefer.

Playing in the ACC for the first time has been very rewarding thus far.

Speaking of online play, I have logged just two games in thus far and both were score-fests to the highest order. Both games were frustrating, yet fun experiences. Frustrating because my defense couldn't manage a stop minus a turnover, but also fun because the games were close and you just knew the next play could be "it." EA was touting this to be the main goal for this year's title and I would have to say they accomplished their mission.

In single player Dynasty mode, with some slider tweaks to the kicking power and accuracy as well as to some other variables, I have managed to get an NCAA which I am getting very realistic scores and very realistic results. So far, losing just means I made the wrong calls at the wrong time. I have never felt cheated and my losses have never felt cheap.

This doesn't sound huge but it is, and I feel it encompasses what NCAA Football 09 is all about, the little things

Dynasty mode itself has not been improved drastically like last year, but it has been given a facelift making it very accessible to all players. Instead of having to tediously do all of the recruiting yourself or blindly let the computer take a whack at recruiting, you can set a strategy and let the computer follow it. This doesn't sound huge but it is, and I feel it encompasses what NCAA Football 09 is all about, the little things.

The one big complaint I have about the gameplay is the AI does not stretch the field with deep passes. A patch will most likely change this down the road, but right now this issue is the single biggest thing keeping NCAA from being so much better.

Stretching the field is something that should be done rarely, but also enough to keep you honest as a defensive coach. If a team can't stretch the field, they should get shut down by good defenses. The action in the trenches is another thing that needs to be tweaked. Right now, AI controlled linemen seem to have a bit of an advantage over their human controlled counterparts.

NCAA Football is a fun and dynamic game which is just a small step away from being a historically great game.

Many would argue that if all of these issues are in the game, NCAA doesn't deserve a high score, but they could not be any more wrong. NCAA Football 09 is not a revolutionary title. EA did not reinvent the wheel with the game. Instead, EA went back to the basics, got the tackling engine down and also managed to throw in a lot of new little things to make the game as a whole a much better experience over last year's game.

Last week, I said that if you wanted to sacrifice some realism for some fun you should buy NCAA. I still agree with that after playing nearly 30 games. NCAA Football is a fun and dynamic game which is just a small step away from being a historically great game.

I understand that some of the sliders seem to not work...

But one thing I have noticed is a lot of people have complained of a lack of a pocket in the madden and NCAA games of past, and now they created one, although a little to the opposite extreme, and people seems to want the D Backs to run wild again. Sometimes there needs to be stepping stones so that you can cross the gap... The gap in this case being the legendary football game (which may very well be this year's madden if it comes as advertised)

^^It is not about the db's not running wild anymore. It is the fact that they are clueless, can't cover certain routes and run the wrong way in coverage alot. I would rather have superhuman cb's than ones that belong in the special olympics. Also let's be honest the pass rush is broken. Watch this play and tell me otherwise.

That is North Texas online maintaining your so called "pocket" for 12 seconds against Mizzou's d-line with pass block at 0 and human break block at 100. The pass rush and pass coverage are broken as simply as that, don't know why people keep on defending EA for breaking three parts of the game: pass rush, pass coverage and punt/kick returns. To think this is the third year in this gen. Maybe we will get a great game by 2011.

If you improve your user skills then defense becomes a lot easier. Stop allowing the computer to make plays for you. Take control of the situation.

^^^Hmm really I didn't know you could control more than one defensive players. Oh that's right you can't. I normally play as the safety but if the other cpu controlled players like the cbs and lbs can't cover at all what good does that do. You can only do so much controlling one player.

I have haven't had the same issues on defense as everyone... I have noticed a ton of pick 6's to my dissapointment, but I have also had a lot of good defensive battles with low scores and low production from both the running and passing games on their parts.

I also have no proof in that video that the sliders are as you state. So for all I know you did the complete opposite trying to really beat a dead horse with your piont. Not to mention I've played plenty of games and gotten plenty of sacks, leading me to believe the system isn't as broken as people state.

If you would stop nitpicking the game maybe you could allow yourself to, I don't know, actually have fun? Try it against human opponents as well, it's an entirely different experience and takes away a lot of the issues. This game is solid, I don't care what anyone says. A lot more things are right about the game than the few things that are 'broken'.

# 26 mgoblue678 @ 07/19/08 10:53 PM
^^^Let's see the majority of people feel the pass rush and pass coverage are messed up but you think your right and everybody is wrong even though your in the minorty.

Lets summarize the things that are either broken or messed up: Pass Rush, Pass Coverage, Sliders, Rosters, Glitches like the magnet catch glitch that are still in the game for whatever reason

That doesn't leave much.

If you want to be technical about it... in actuality you are part of a vocal minority. One of the biggest problems with internet forums are that people join together in anonymity and just start complaining about everything, somewhat warranted but not to the degree that it goes on.

The true majority are the people who don't give a damn about these technical errors and don't go to a forum to find out what other people think about a game. They make up minds for themselves and just go out and have fun playing.

You want a broken game go play MLB 2k8. NCAA '09 is very far from broken, and could have been something great if it didn't have some of the flaws, and yet it still is an awesome experience.

# 28 MizzouRah @ 07/19/08 11:04 PM
There are ALOT of people complaining about everything mgoblue has said and the big thing for me is the lack of pass rushing. There is no way in hell North Texas could pass protect againt Mizzou's DLine like that... and that ruins it for me.

It pains me to think I won't be playing some NCAA this year, especially since my Mizzou Tigers are finally a powerhouse team.

Great game..better when patches come out.

I work for my money, I expect my $60 to be worthwhile. I expect EA to put there best effort into the game which they clearly did not because most of these problems should have been caught as simply as that. I hate how people act like apololigists for companies like EA.

this game is nothing short of amazing. i am playing with North Carolina and this game is working wonders for me. i hope madden is just as good as this game is for me.

Once again, EA demonstrates how they can sell anything and there will be tons of people to defend them. I wonder if anyone would buy a brand new car with all sorts of issues but say something like "but it the end, it's a great car!"

You know, I was part of that group that believed that this would be the best football game ever, and that we would get a true experience. I remember back in 2004, that year's NCAA was the best ever, and I wanted that same experience. It's 2009 now, and it's taken far too many steps behind.

I love playing Defense, but this is terrible. You could put ten men in the middle, and the quarterback would still find somebody there wide open. Simming through it helps, but I want to PLAY defense, not just look at the bars go across the screen. There is no way to get to the quarterback (in fact, in the past five days I've only had one sack), and when you do get there he moves to another county to throw.

Offense would be fun if you didn't complete 85% of your passes. Combine that with a defensive AI that couldn't guard against a pee wee football team, and games become barn burners. I shouldn't have games with North Texas that go for 50 points.

Then combine that with a terrible online experience. EA Locker is broken beyond belief, and one of the major features that was supposed to revolutionize the game can't even be used. There is still major points of lag between games, and nobody plays sim football (although that ain't EA's fault per se).

I was going to buy this game, but I decided to rent it first this year, and I'm glad I did. There is no way I would spend $60 on a game that should have been in development for another month. This is sad too, because I used to love this game back when the developers cared. Now, since games like Front Office Football are better, I'll spend my money there.

I keep hearing that the game favor the offense this year, but so far my games have been interceptionfests with multiple defensive TDs in each game. Online I've struggled on offense but done very well with defense. Offiline, the CPU offense doesn't challenge my defense enough on AA.

Anyone who is claiming that they have little to no defensive issues, is a stone cold liar. Plain and simple.

This game is a defensive atrocity.

^^^100% agree

Is there a law that says you're not allowed to like a game made by EA?

I heard this saying once, "To each their own." It's quite clear that many haven't heard it before.

CH2K8 got a 7 from this site. They are saying that NCAA 2009 deserves an 8 and maybe better.
