The Return of The Chiefs - Franchise Year 3 (2011)
Posted on June 13, 2010 at 08:23 PM.
After falling to 5-11 last year, in what was supposed to be full of promise, that just made the work we had ahead of us in the off-season that much more important.

Re-Signings (right at seasons end):
HB Charles - He is the future of our backfield, so we extend him 5years/35million!
ROLB Hali - Had a great year, so 3years/25million for some more
TE Cottam - We re-sign as insurance behind the rookie
DT Herron
DT Morgan
DT Edwards
C Harris - Whom we felt simply won the position over the year
LG Alleman
* Were all the moves prior to taking a vacation at seasons end

Release (right at seasons end):
C Morris
CB Patterson
QB Hanie
* We have a lot of draft picks and I wanted to make sure we had the room. Aside from Hanie, who would have signed for a mimimal deal, the rest simply wanted to much and would not have been re-signed when the time came.

Front Office:
Coaching Staff
OC Pete Carmichael - QB +5 AWR
DC Mel Tucker - CB, FS, SS +3 PRC
ST Joe Marciano - K Power and K/P Accuracy +3

Training Staff
Hold on Tight Training - HB Carry +5 (hoping to cut down on fumbles)

Stadium Upgrades - Mini-Mall, Kiosks and Solar Panels
* Again, hoping this will impress the assembled masses each week on Game Day!
Sponsorship: Into second deal of 3-year agreement with Scarn for 3-million dollars. Again the expectation is either 10 wins or a playoff berth.

Off Season:

Retirements: None!

Re-Signings:
Again, not sure whether the players (I know, it's AI) "appreciate" you extending them, but...
WR Bowe given a 5year deal
CB Flowers rewarded for a great year with 6years/73million!
CB Cason the other key piece in the secondary with 6years/67million!
MLB Johnson showed me he wanted to play, so 3 more years

Free Agents:
Once again we felt it important to build with the draft for the future. I couldn't help but peak at the wire, but nothing stood out as being worth dropping a ton of cash, especially since I had pretty much just done that with my current roster.

Draft:
Round 1 - Pick #4 - DT M.Evans
Round 2 - WR S.Johnson
Round 3 - CB D.Dyles
Round 4 - DT O.Williams
Round 4 - WR L.Black
Round 5 - CB D.Keys
Round 5 - LOLB A.Darby
Round 5 - QB M.Normil
Round 6 - K A.Fitte
Round 6 - HB D.Williams

While we set out to bolster some defensive position this year, as you can see, there were a few other positions that interested me with later round picks. I felt quite good about my choice for WR and with two each DT and CB, plus another WR, I think we covered the positions and camp will be ultra-compettive this fall.

Rookie Signings:
Evans - 6years/47million (Again a steep price for the first round)
Johnson - 4years/7.5million
Dyles - 5years/10million
O.Williams - 4years/5.35million
Black - 4years/3.10million
Keys - 3years/930k
Darby - 5years/1.15million
Normil - 4years/1.24million
Fitte - 7years/2.15million
D.Williams - 4years/1.24million
* As always, I first try to do the math with minimal bonuses. The bottom half or so are signed without bonuses, making them easy to cut should they not pan out. The top...not so much! Agents...

This year our Draft Grade was F, worst of 32 teams! I assume that's the price you pay for targeting some positions and not simply picking best player (assuming the draft order produces best players top through bottom in order) at the time. Best value was deemed DT Orien Williams, but I felt good about all my picks and also felt like we have added talent and depth in the places most needed by The Chiefs! We'll see if the F comes back to haunt me.
By the way, best grades (B+) went to Packes, Bengals, Broncos, Raiders and Chargers. Yes, I noticed too that the last three are all our division rivals!

Salary Cap was really utilized this season. I sucked it down to only about 16-million after extending contracts and signing picks. Plus we still have a penalty going forward of 1-million next year.
Once again we did what we intended to hopefully assemble a winner for Kansas City, but clearly we'll have to operate different as we go now with a much more restrictive cap.

Very excited about 2011 - Franchise Year #3...
